In Judaism, there is no eternal hell or everlasting damnation like in other religions. Instead, the afterlife includes a temporary process called Gehinnom (often translated as purgatory), where the soul is cleansed of its spiritual impurities—much like washing mud off a candy before eating it.This purification lasts up to 11 months for the righteous and a maximum of 12 months for the wicked, determined by the heavenly court. That’s why we recite Kaddish for only 11 months after someone passes—assuming they’ve already atoned and are being purified. The parsha begins with the 70 souls descending to Egypt, rapidly multiplying ("paru v'yishretzu v'yarbu v'yaatzmu b'meod meod"), becoming mighty—yet a new Pharaoh arises who "did not know Yosef" and enslaves them out of fear.The rabbi poses the central question: Why did the strong, numerous Jews passively accept enslavement? The answer lies in the death of Yosef's generation—the proud, warrior-like leaders—leaving a spiritually weakened people with superficial "cultural" Jewish identity but no deep Torah connection. This lack of authentic pride and investment in Judaism rendered them vulnerable, mirroring recurring patterns (Golden Calf, Spies) where low self-worth led to catastrophe.True Jewish pride, Rabbi Wolbe stresses, comes not from empty slogans ("I'm proud to be Jewish," flags, or national symbols) but from personal investment in Torah and mitzvot—turning Judaism from a shallow "culture" into a vibrant, lived reality.
