What if 7-minutes a day was all it took to pivot your career entirely? Incremental changes that add up to life-changing differences... Dr. Cynthia Bentzen-Mercer and I discuss the concept of the seven minute pivot, a method for individuals to invest a small amount of time daily to create significant changes in their lives and careers. It's a fitting way to close our celebratory 200th episode week. The conversation explores Cynthia's career journey from broadcasting to human resources, her research into ambitious women, and the importance of intentionality in leadership. We also think about self-advocacy among women, the fallacy of equating years of experience with effectiveness, and the mental health implications of hiring decisions. It's here. Episode number 200. And for this milestone I wanted to record something really special, it took me a little while to define what that would be but I think I chose wisely. The idea was to speak to someone who has had a hugely positive influence in my own leadership and career journey. I'm very glad I was able to briefly coax Stu Vincent out of retirement to join me on the podcast this week, because he ticks all of the above boxes and has been a great mentor to me over the years (pretty much from our first conversation, walking down a high street, I forget where, in 2011 on the way to a work Christmas do).In this episode then, we talk about Stu's 38 year career in the Royal Air Force as an airframe engineer, his second career in the private sector, the memorable lessons and impactful moments that come to mind from his experiences, and what they each taught him about leadership along the way.I say this in the episode but I'll say it again here: Thank you, Stu, not just for this episode but for the influence you've had on my career and the valuable lessons you've taught me over the last 15-odd years. I look forward to our Christmas meet-up soon 🍻Thanks for listening/watching this very special episode of Leading with integrity: Leadership talk. An added bonus episode for the 200 week: a look back at some (not all, there's not enough space, so any omitted guests please don't be disheartened that I couldn't fit you all in!!) of my favourite moments from the podcast over the last 4 years. Join me in the 'editing studio' as I watch back some old clips, many of which I haven't seen since the day I edited them...I'm also going to do something I've never done before: read out some of the 40+ listener, and nearly 70 guest reviews. And maybe a lesson or two about podcasting as well. If there's time. Hopefully something a bit different, a peak behind the curtain, all in good fun. Thanks for listening/watching this very special episode of Leading with integrity: Leadership talk. Hands up if you know what a mentalist is? Now put your hand down if you've actually met one in real life instead of seen them on TV... yeah, same. Mentalism is real, and it has some important lessons to teach us in the field of human behaviour, which is of course relevant to leadership as well as important business areas from security to sales and beyond. This week, we have a whole bunch of extra episodes in celebration of reaching the 200th Episode milestone on Leading with Integrity. Kicking us off today is Gary Chan, Mentalist, Security Expert, and Speaker. We talk about how Gary combines his love of magic, real-world mentalism and security, illustrating how mentalism can be a powerful tool in leadership too. And we even find time for a card trick that, not gunna lie, kind of blew my mind a bit....Thanks for listening/watching this episode of Leading with integrity. We've all heard it: "Just Be Yourself". But is this actually the WORST piece of advice you've ever heard? Maybe... here's why...I'm joined this week by Dr Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic, an organizational psychologist and author of 15 books, including his latest "Don’t Be Yourself: Why Authenticity is Overrated and What to Do Instead."We'll be talking about nuances and complexities of authenticity, in your life, career, and in leadership. Tomas critiques the mainstream understanding of authenticity, and why being yourself isn't always that helpful, and how an understanding of identity and the roles we play in different contexts is more important. We get into the line between authenticity and professionalism, and the potential pitfalls of excessive authenticity, including narcissism and entitlement. Thanks for listening/watching this episode of Leading with integrity: Leadership talk. How do you build rapport with a new team? Or build a productive working relationship with people you just don't like? This week I'm talking with Corporate Spy, Foreign Policy Advisor & Risk Consultant, Jeremy Hurewitz, who shares his journey from journalism to corporate espionage, and the key lessons his career has taught him about people, relationships, and leadership. Such as, the importance of emotional intelligence, vulnerability, and how to build rapport (even with people you're not the biggest fan of). We also hear some of the big misconceptions surrounding spies, what some of the facts vs fictions are about the skills they possess, and how these real-world skills can be applied in business settings. There's some great insights here for managing difficult relationships, understanding human behavior, why listening makes all the difference, as well as broader topics like the impact of diversity and the role of AI in hiring practices. Thanks for listening/watching this episode of Leading with integrity: Leadership talk. This week, I talk with leadership coach Annabel Smith about the do's and don't's of leadership, how to lead with people and humanity in mind, what that looks like in real workplaces. Annabel has plenty of insights to share from her work as a coach, as well as experiences from a 30-year teaching career. Themes that run throughout this episode include the importance of personality, empathy, and integrity in leadership, why coaching is significant, burnout and the need for leaders to recognise the humanity of team members. This is a deep conversation about leading well, from the right place, and will touch on most of the big topics of leadership, including: empowering, building trust, navigating emotions, team dynamics, and context. Leaders, are you leading with purpose and empowering your people? (Or offering them enough autonomy, if you prefer that to the 'e' word!). Are we misunderstanding trust, and ignoring the red flags that lead to betrayal? It's a question that everyone, leaders and followers, could learn from. And I'm joined on Leading with Integrity this week by Clay Moffat, author of the Trust Trap, to talk about this question (and hopefully find an answer).Clay explains the concept of trust, its dynamics in relationships, why we tend to misunderstand what it is, how it works, and how it is influenced by childhood experiences and our emotional intelligence. He introduces the idea of the 'trust trap' and our conversation also touches on the importance of leadership in fostering trust. Together, we'll delve into the nuances of leadership, self-sabotage, and the importance of creativity in the personal and professional realms. At first glance, the phrases "leveraging AI" and "People-first" seem mutually exclusive, or at least competing priorities, don't they? Today on Leading with Integrity, we'll be hearing why that's a flawed assumption, and how the reality is more complex. My guest is Founder, Strategist, and Human–AI Collaborator, Lynn Colepaugh. We talk about how the integration of AI in a human-centric approach (in Lynn's case, for marketing and creativity) is the way of the future. Lynn also shares her origin story, from touring musician to digital marketing expert, and business founder, and the lessons about leadership, authenticity and emotional intelligence learned along the way. We even manage to talk Disney, Battlestar Galactica, and time travel! Thanks for listening/watching this episode of Leading with integrity: Leadership talk.
