Do you ever watch a movie from your childhood & wonder: "Why did I love this so much when I was a kid?" or "Why didn't I notice THAT when I was a kid?" or "WTF did I just watch??" These are the questions that intrepid podcast hosts & brothers Jeff & Matt dive into every week, as they attempt to make sense of their youthful cinematic obsessions, investigate the changing cultural landscape, and hopefully not completely ruin their childhoods in the process.

This week, the brothers tackle what just might be their most challenging (& painful) movie yet: the 1980 Dino De Laurentiis-produced, Queen-scored, vomit-inducingly designed comic-book adaptation whose complete lack of taste & vision causes our hosts to question their very faith in humanity.[Deep exhale:] It's just a movie. It's Flash Gordon.

Episode 29: Legend (1985)

2024-05-1301:21:09

This week, the brothers engage in a lively discussion as they dissect Ridley Scott's compromised 1985 fantasy, and attempt to determine whether its beautiful aesthetic design can compensate for its borderline incomprehensible weirdness. It's Legend.(And no, NOT the Tom Hardy movie where he plays twins.)
The brothers take an epic dive into this 1995 action-thriller, a shameless "Die Hard" ripoff that proves more baffling than thrilling, and which forces Jeff & Matt to reevaluate their childhood adoration of its leading man: JCVD, himself.(That's Jean-Claude Van Damme. Obviously.)It's Sudden Death.
This week, the brothers investigate this 1999 horror thriller, a remake that manages to be neither horrifying nor thrilling, and the most frightening thing about it is the terrible CGI. Excited yet??!It's The Haunting.
This week, the brothers tackle Quentin Tarantino's 1994 pop-culture sensation, breaking down its brilliant dialogue, killer soundtrack, and its profound effect on the zeitgeist, making it easily one of the most pivotal & significant films of the '90s.It's Pulp Fiction.
The brothers make their first (& certainly not last) foray into the filmography of the one & only Jim Carrey, with this 1994 blockbuster comic-book adaptation, admiring the film's trust in its live-wire leading man, as well as its cartoonish special effects, and most importantly, its introduction of a show-stopping Cameron Diaz. It's The Mask.
The brothers code their way through the oft-overlooked '90s caper comedy/thriller, starring Robert Redford & a top-notch ensemble of a cast, a surprisingly prescient & entertaining prelude to the post-Cold War, tech-fearing mid-90s.("Too many secrets.")It's Sneakers.
It's time to get tripendicular, as the brothers like totally bask in the glory of this '80s cult classic, marveling at its surprising authenticity, its early Nic Cage performance, and its truly baffling dialogue (which is either the worst or most brilliant ever written). It's Bosco! (It's Valley Girl.)
The brothers venture into Sherwood Forest for this 1991 blockbuster, quite possibly the LEAST merry interpretation of its legendary protagonist, portrayed by an actor who, in 1991, was clearly the ONLY POSSIBLE CHOICE to fill those formidable green tights: Kevin Costner. (No, we're not kidding.)It's Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
Matt & Jeff rejoice in the Coen Brothers' sophomore effort, discussing the unique tone, exceptional writing, and innovative camerawork that made this gonzo, effervescent (and borderline cartoon) comedy a modern masterpiece. All right, then. It's Raising Arizona.
The brothers return at last with an extra special Oscars episode, discussing the winners & losers of this year's ceremony as well as memorable moments from years past, and whether or not anyone still cares about any of it. Also, Matt's Oscar knowledge is tested in a nail-biting round of trivia that might just prove once and for all that he is, in fact, the biggest movie-nerd of all time. It's the Oscars episode.
The merriment abounds as the brothers revisit this 1988 Dickensian nightmare "comedy," featuring a completely unhinged Bill Murray as the angriest & LOUDEST Scrooge to ever be Scrooged. It's Scrooged.
Episode 19: Gremlins (1984)

The yuletide joy continues as the brothers discuss Joe Dante's classic 1984 creature-feature, a film that manages to subvert Christmas, small-town America, and good taste in equal measure. And, spoiler alert... it's a f*****g blast! It's Gremlins.
The brothers kick off the Christmas season by attempting to make sense of this Arnold Schwarzenegger holiday comedy, a mind-boggling ode to consumerism that stretches all logic to the breaking point.God help us. It's Jingle All the Way.
Just in time for Thanksgiving, the brothers are back for John Hughes's holiday classic, featuring Steve Martin & John Candy as one of the greatest odd-couple pairings in cinematic history."Those aren't pillows..."It's Planes, Trains & Automobiles.
This week, the brothers take a stab at dissecting Wes Craven's '90s slasher classic; a true game-changer that brought the horror genre into the 21st century. "Do you like scary movies??" Well, we all know who LOVES them! (Jeff. Jeff loves them.)It's Scream.
The brothers descend into the existential head-trip of Adrian Lyne's brilliant psychological thriller, discussing the subjectivity of the film's design, the complicated nature surrounding the cinematic depiction of Vietnam, and how scared Jeff was. It's Jacob's Ladder.
The brothers see dead people as they revisit M. Night Shyamalan's 1999 supernatural smash hit, and question the present-day effectiveness of one of cinema's "greatest" twists. (But mostly, they just talk about how scared Jeff was.)It's The Sixth Sense.
Episode 13: Aliens (1986)

Episode 13: Aliens (1986)

2023-10-0201:22:26

This week, the brothers revel in the nerve-shredding brilliance of James Cameron's blockbuster sequel, a film that made one of them nearly soil themselves. Listen in to find out which one it was!(It was Jeff.)It's Aliens.
The brothers finish off their quartet of special episodes by saddling up for the Billy Crystal-led cowboy classic that started it all; a deceptively simple fish-out-of-water comedy that is probably much more insightful & profound than you remember. (If you're a middle-aged, straight white man, that is.) It's City Slickers.
