The public clamor over a purported haunted house in the middle of Bridgehampton has not died down, as much as Lyle Hall wishes it would—he’s the unlikely discoverer of whatever’s been going on inside the decrepit Victorian everyone calls Old Vic. Since Lyle’s near-death experience killing kindly Elsie Cronk with his Hummer in a grisly car crash, he hasn’t been the same. He’s seen the error of his ways, his misspent adulthood, his career as the town’s greediest lawyer, his attempted playboy lifestyle, and truly wants to make amends.
One new wrinkle—Lyle hears things. Dead things, dead people. And sometimes sees them, too. He cannot control the sounds and visions. Especially when a sad girl in Victorian garb appears to him outside Old Vic. She wants something, just like living people, but does not speak English. However, she does show Lyle a terrifying vision: his estranged 30-year-old daughter’s tombstone. Southampton Police detective Georgie Hall has four more days to live. If you believe such things. And she does not.

Lyle Hall, a greedy Hamptons real estate lawyer, has been sidelined by a deadly car crash most people think he caused. Adding to his many issues, Lyle is convinced a ghost is speaking to him from inside an abandoned Victorian house—informing him his daughter will soon die. It seems only an old nemesis can help him investigate.

Lyle is now obsessed with saving the abandoned “Old Vic,” but before taking legal steps, he visits his wise guy former partner to pay off his ex’s beach house. Lyle then visits an old priest for moral support and gets more than expected.

Not a religious man, Lyle decides he can obtain insight into the afterlife from an old parish priest who’s also a former client. Monsignor Hannan resists any notions of haunted houses, instead foisting a strange young priest from Malta on Lyle. Over coffee, Lyle realizes handsome Fr. Matteo is not an exorcist—rather, he’s had exorcism performed on him.

Matteo convinces Lyle to take him to Old Vic to explore. Inside, both men have deeply disturbing yet revealing paranormal experiences—Matteo is confronted by a roomful of dead prostitutes while Lyle is overcome by a demonic presence trying to kill him.

Overnight, ghost fanatics who’ve learned of a haunting online, have set up a tent city around Lyle’s house. A strange middle-aged woman named “Flo” appears at Lyle’s door proposing an exclusive media contract with FEAR.com. Lyle refuses, until he sees a photo of the TV show’s gorgeous host… meanwhile, Georgie is charged with surveilling a limo business—a suspected front for drugs and prostitution.

Exhausted but smitten with the striking photo of “Silk,” Lyle signs Flo’s exclusive FEAR.com contract without reading it. Flo, a clairvoyant, grills sleepy Lyle about his daughter, Georgie, picking up on their estrangement and Lyle’s belief that she is in mortal danger. Once Flo leaves, elderly, kindly “Glen” appears offering insights into the “Believers” outside–the neighborhood is overrun with these motley people. Georgie calls: she is being sexually harassed at work because of Lyle’s ghost story–with ghostly condoms.

Alone finally, late at night, Lyle calls “Linder,” a police-sketch expert. Lyle offers him cash to recreate “Jewel” from Lyle’s memory: a young girl dressed in adult Victorian garb. Lyle has a fitful dream, seeing Jewel again, this time holding a newborn. Next morning, Fraser calls to berate Lyle and remind him his court date is this morning! Courthouse is jammed. Judge Sloane erupts when Lyle decides to withdraw his stay of demolition.

Meeting Silk is all Lyle imagined: She’s gorgeous and focused on success. But she abruptly leaves him to Flo and the guys in the FEAR.com van. They’re taking Lyle to Montauk to shoot an interview with Silk for “Entertainment Tonight.” Passing the scene of his deadly crash, Lyle re-lives it, and clairvoyant Flo can also observe the violent accident. At her police station, Georgie confronts the desk sergeant, and Chief Queeley threatens her job. Back in her squad car, another inflated “ghost condom” awaits her.

In her police car, Georgie vents to Sgt. Frank, her secret boyfriend, about the workplace harassment Lyle is causing. Frank tells her Lyle has been spirited away in a van marked FEAR.com and Georgie freaks. At the motel in Montauk, Lyle is unhappy with the accommodations but Flo takes him to his favorite spot, Gurney’s, for lunch. Lyle orders wine and seafood and Flo probes him and softens him up for the interview.

At Gurney’s Inn, Lyle cleans up and changes into the resort’s “leisure wear.” Flo notes how inappropriate his sweatsuit’s color–peach–is for TV. Riding back to the motel, Flo tells Lyle he had a near death experience driving past the site of his deadly crash and Lyle shares personal details about the incident. At the motel taproom/TV set, bartender Rooney is upset–the shoot will ruin his business–but Lyle gets him happily paid off. Then Lyle spots the object of his desire being made up for her on-camera interview: Silk.

Rooney provides his old customer Lyle with his favorite scotch. He’s “over-served” before he sits down with Silk, his head full of bad TV news reports about Old Vic. Frank alerts Georgie that TV trucks are at the motel. Georgie is angry and calls Lyle, demanding he end his Old Vic antics. Just then Lyle is summoned to sit before the cameras. Silk is skilled at describing the Old Vic phenomenon and Lyle’s own foibles on live TV. Flo joins in. Silk asks why a “haunted whorehouse” would have a young girl talking to him.

Cameras rolling, Silk connects Lyle’s history as a ladies’ man with how a girl from a brothel chose him to talk to. She posts the police sketch of Jewel onscreen for all to see. Flo adds that Jewel promised a return of “full function” to his injured legs. Silk suggests that could be sexual. She asks what Lyle and Fr. Matteo experienced inside Old Vic. Lyle is candid: he was possessed by invisible spiders and “pure evil” while Matteo “set free” prostitute ghosts by praying. Silk promises they’ll return to Old Vic next, and Lyle freaks.

Silk and her TV crew drag Lyle along to revisit Old Vic—but it’s locked tight by police. So they choose to shoot in the adjacent barn where they are confronted with horrid creatures; especially the coven of bats that disrupt the shoot and send them running. Outside Lyle, temporarily heroic, frees one bat from Flo’s hair and she agrees to buy him a drink in the local old man’s bar.

Gertie the old barmaid detests Lyle and resists serving him a second drink at closing despite the “Twenty” he offers her. Flo starts pressuring Lyle to give up his pathetic longing for Silk when suddenly the bar owner appears and throws them both out. Walking to Lyle’s house, Flo notes the cemetery across from his home, which is totally toilet-papered by locals! Georgie drives up and argues with Lyle. Flo gleans his secret: Georgie will die, and soon! And on his porch, lies something big. It’s twitching.

Seductive Chantale Benoit has a tete e tete with Berto Pena, the new, but weak head of the drugs and prostitution ring based in Hampton Bays. Chantale exploits Berto’s weakness for her and elicits a pledge: he will make her a lot of money, buy her a big house and more. Flo delivers Lyle to his front porch and they’re shocked to find a dead old man lying there with a snarling, rabid possum standing over the body. The creature launches itself at Lyle and Flo.

Detective Georgie Hall meets Berto outside his limo service. Berto, secretly upset that he’s not surveilled by a male cop, puts on a show of chivalry, cutting a weird voodoo doll free from its perch on Georgie’s windshield wiper. In her hand it pricks her finger. They exchange business cards and Berto is gratified that Georgie’s bears a spot of her blood. Lyle’s house is now swarming with police. He’s deposed by Sgt. Frank, then Fr. Matteo and then Noah Craig. Then a very pissed off Georgie Hall.

In the morning, Fr. Matteo comes to pick up Lyle from his house. He’s packed a bag. They drive to a diner and commence their first deep discussion of issues—while Lyle drinks scotch. The men recount their experience inside Old Vic. Did Matteo truly set free a coven of ghostly prostitutes? Did Lyle really succumb to a possessive demon? Matteo describes his harrowing near-death experience as a boy in Malta—and how his own mother died during a demonic struggle.

Seated at the diner, Matteo tells Lyle how his two young friends suffered during his experience of demonic possession. One boy died horribly. Disowned by his father, Matteo attended the local Maltese seminary school, eventually becoming a priest. On the ride to Montauk with Noah, Lyle shares a theory: Old Vic’s ownership has been kept secret by Police Chief Queeley. And Lyle was informed by the mysterious Ghost Girl that Georgie will die in two days.
