Introducing a three part series with retired professor and Dean of the College of Health and Human Services at Southeast Missouri State University. In 2004, her son Leslie was killed by police. Dr. Prater has made it her mission to prevent police misconduct and brutality ever since. She discusses her efforts to get accountability for her son and the work she does so that other families are spared what she
experienced. In March, Dr. Prater and Sybrina Fulton (the mother of Trayvon
Martin) spoke at the University of Delaware’s Ida B. Wells Lecture. This
three-part series captures Dr. Prater’s story. You can also learn more by
reading her book: Excessive Use of Force: One Mother’s Struggle Against
Police Brutality and Misconduct. Available online and in stores.

This week Elle talks with Professor Barbara Ley and University of Delaware student Rain Dehel about the Decades Day Workshop put on by the Women and Gender Studies Department. As part of their 50th anniversary celebration the UD department is hosting five workshops focusing on one decade. The second workshop centers the 1980s and HIV/AIDS crisis. Philadelphia ACT UP activists spoke with students about ongoing efforts to address HIV, income inequality, and LGBTQ+ discrimination.
In part two, writers for the UD Review and sexual assault prevention advocates Shayna Demick and Danny Tull talk about measures that would make students feel more comfortable on campus, communication issues, the problem with emergency text alerts, and how they recharge.

Demick and Tull write for The Review (https://udreview.com/) and want to see better communication and prevention measures around gender-based violence on college campuses.
