The world of Christmas is vast and diverse. It can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time. Even a mouse can have Christmas. It can happen in March. Who cares? You got other stuff to worry about, Connor. The dark and forbidden corners of the earth are exhumed through the grimy mysticism of Onibaba and the Gothic mystery of Le Corbeau. Crossing Delancey offsets them with the confection-sweet simplicity of love and sincerity, but it's not as cool to me, Sean, because I like weird and scary stuff. Like Christmas. Listener beware...you're in for a chill...^pretty good^From the resplendent Scottish highlands, to the depths of a horny French basement, to the dark aftermath of a Guatemala torn apart by tyranny, our purview is stretched wide-open this week to all the cinema of the world! Our purview is STUFFED with these mature adult dramas exploring the kalediscopic expressions of human pain-the bombast and pride of a warrior with no battles left to fight, the infatuations of The Frenchman with Forbidden Fruit, and the scariness of Ghosts to a family who may or may not have done some bad stuff. It happens frequently that we stumble on a movie that depicts just how insanely done dirty Central and South America has been. Sorry about that, guys. Giulietta Masina died four years before I was born but she is the only one who understands my pain. She is an angel of the gentlest character and an artist beyond peer. She should be in every movie at least twice. We need to do Clone High to bring her back so she can be a 15 second cameo in a Safdie move. On this year's special Christmas episode Anthony, Sean, and Tyler watch the classic(?) holiday special based on a song people don't really like that much. Does Santa secretly keep all your deceased relatives at the North Pole? What was in that vile of random junk anyway? What are the geopolitical issues facing Whoville?
It's not even embarrassing that we switched to three movies a week instead of four. Giving up ground is a sign of strength actually. We have you right where we want you.Look, Rosemary's Baby I get, you can't miss that one. And I (Sean) actually liked Knife in the Water! But we can't keep letting Roman get in here! We don't want to have to address it!! Thankfully Le Cercle Rouge is some crazy powerful ass-whipping top-shelf cinema. It's thrilling. It's got characters. We talk about it. All parts of a balanced breakfast. There's Criterion in them there Collection...Another Bergman bonanza for the boys as we happily gulp down another spoonful of slow-cooked resentment and self doubt. Winter Light lets us get a little Christian, once again seeing Anthony test his faith against the smug musings of Sean, a level 9 Reddit atheist. Charlie Chaplin is back to show that you can be goofy on film, an idea that even today is whispered of only in secret cloisters. Eric Clapton joins us to discuss his song Lola, but we quickly realize that we were mixing up Lola and Layla and also that we watched a movie called Lola that had nothing to with anything he's ever done. He called us names. The hits keep coming from Rainer Werner Fassbinder as he sends another fastball over the plate. Hope you like learning about the sociopolitical environment of post-war Germany. I genuinely hope you do. We need more people like that. A brief dalliance with Japanese jerk-off freaks and a detour down nightmare alley bridge us to our discussion of Harmony Korine's Gummo, in which we have considerable objections to the way we are portrayed in the film as the characters "Tummler" and "Dot" and heavily consider legal action. Anton Chekhov stealthily plants his famous gun at the beginning of each segment of this podcast. Can you find them all??? It would be a huge help. Seriously, thanks for this. Let me know when you find them, this has been really ruining my life.Rainer Werner Fassbender doesn't let up with unbelievable heat firing from all chambers. What we learn from him is that some German filmmakers actually DIDN'T like Hitler. We learn from Uncle Vanya that sometimes you make a lot of small mistakes and waste the only life you're ever going to get. Drive My Car brightens that with the knowledge that then you can be in a play about a guy who did that and your life can be fun, even when bad stuff happens. I'm pretty sure that's the only thing the movie wants to say. Tragedy, forbidden love, twisted masculinity, and old-fashioned down-and-dirty deep south detective drama dovetail delectably in this unskippable episode of Always See Everything. The rest have been pretty disposable but this one you're REALLY not gonna want to miss. Our most "normal" episode yet sees Sean get political, Anthony reading Norm of the North Fandom articles while Sean gets political, and some light discussion of the relevant films.Anxiety surrounding the intersection of labor, political economy and personal life is the bread and butter of Ermanno Olmi, occasionally called "the Italian Jacques Tati." But this is an AMERICAN style podcast with sloppy grits and butter pies on the side, so we watch In the Heat of the Night and El Norte, two films about the dopeness of the American project and the great things yet to come! Another heater this week as we nestle metaphorically in the hypothetical rolls of Orson Welles' big belly in heaven. I'm writing this the day Brian Wilson died, and I heard that he's playing Orson's titties like bongo drums to make beautiful music for Jesus while he sleeps. Almost makes you forget about the genocide in Gaza, eh?This season was incomplete without a Kurosawa, so we fix that. Throne of Blood is kind of an honorary Welles film too, because its based on Shakespeare and good. Jubilee is probably the coolest movie to describe but doesn't quite come together for us. We're far too Orson-pilled now, regular films just don't suffice. Speaking of: Chimes at Midnight embodies the spirit and power of the Fat Rascal in a way heretofore unseen. The Immortal Story, meanwhile, is basically a documentary about what happens when a man becomes a fujoshi. Just noticing I misspelled Antoine Doinel's last name in the previous description. We really are set apart from the beasts by our capacity to learn, don't you think? A mistake is the most human thing of all, precisely because we can recognize it as such.Speaking of mistakes, Love on the Run concludes the 400 Blows-iverse with the correct message: there is nothing in life so beautiful that it isn't worth throwing away to smoke cigarettes and hook up with women who don't respect you. The White Sheik is probably as unremarkable a film as Frederico Fellini is capable of constructing, and frankly I, Sean, am sorry to have selected it for viewing. On the bright side, more Orson! Mr. Arkadan sees The Beard (nickname I'm trying to get off the ground for Orson Welles. I know it's for James Harden too but I don't think anyone is going to get them confused) playing a dark, morose villain against the backdrop of an international spy drama. He tries to fly in a plane but it crashes because he is too fat. This is almost as sad as Othello, a film based on a book or something where Orson Welles is nowhere to be seen and the lead is played by a black man. Our quest to Unseat Citizen Kane as "the best one" surges onward! Francois Truffaut, illustrious director of The 400 Blows, steps up to the plate with two Legacy Sequels featuring that film's protagonist...but now, Antoine Donel is grown, and he's going to make the society that has imprisoned him feel every one of those 400 blows. He accomplishes this task through casual sex. This is typically how the French accomplish their tasks. But we're far from done with Orson Welles. In the coming weeks, we will be watching all of his films in the collection to stack them up against the Kane-daddy. First is The Magnificent Ambersons, the fabled half-finished masterpiece that can be called the Potential Man of Welles filmography. Finally, The Trial is basically about a situation so crazy that I could even call it Kafkaesque. And you KNOW I don't say that lightly. Anthony and Sean, The Gods of Cinema, return. And this season is all business. No more sandy beaches. No more Margaritas. No more mysterious tattoos of LatinX ""cuties."" We begin with our seminal review of Citizen Kane, and from now on every film we watch this season will have to measure up to it. Like Anubis weighing sinners' hearts against a feather, so shall we compare the value of each work to that which has been called "The Movie."Our definitive review of this definitive masterpiece lays out the pillars of Kane, the value of jumpscares, and whether or not the sled thing was kind of dumb the whole time. The Emperor Of Podcast Award Shows crawls from his tomb once again to mercilessly dictate the winners and losers of this season of Always See Everything. Witness in horror as The Trentie casts his dark glare over David Lynch, Wim Wenders, David Cronenberg, David Dekalog and many others as they quake in terror beneath the weight of his dark judgement. Anthony and Sean are mere pawns in his game, can only guess at his veiled intentions. The soul-wrenching conclusion to our two-part barn-burner on late great experimental filmmaker Stan Brakhage. We manage to perfectly and flawlessly interpret the symbolic and aesthetic intention behind each and every one of his films. We get a Ouija board and the man himself confirms it, we were dead on every time. It's almost too easy for us, honestly.
