Active listening skills, involving both verbal and non-verbal techniques, are at the core of any successful conversation. Habitually, we listen to reply! We are dying to make the speaker stop speaking so that we can start speaking our thoughts and give our suggestions and at times we are even finding ways to end the conversation so we can move on to the next thing. When we sincerely listen to what others say they will also be interested in communicating with us and so a connection will be formed. This can effectually help avoid miscommunication, form friendships and improve any relationships. I always suggest an exercise in my communication skill workshops focused on actively listening. So, I make a few people engage in a discussion. Then I randomly ask everyone in the team to write a summary of information they listened to, from any two speakers in the discussion. This, I’ve found, a good way to get into the habit of forcing your mind to stay active and engaged during interactions with others. It also helps you stay focused during conversations. This episode is all about mastering the art of ACTIVE LISTENING! I share with you three tricks that have helped me phenomenally over the years and my students have found these most valuable as well! I hope this sharing of knowledge via this podcast, helps you polish your communication skills! Learn more such exercises in my potpourri of communication skill programs. I engage in both one-on-one mentoring and train teams and groups. My most popular communication programs are around public speaking skills, creative writing skills, fiction/ non-fiction writing skill development, presentation skill building or interviewing skills. Being able to start a meaningful conversation is an important skill that you can use to build and strengthen relationships. In this podcast, we discuss how to start a conversation, explore several ways to start talking to a new person and share some examples of conversation starters for different situations. Conversation starters with colleagues or professional contacts can look different than those with new friends or acquaintances. Your initial efforts can start a conversation that might help you build valuable relationships with coworkers and colleagues. “So, what do you do?” Did that question make you cringe? Maybe it takes you back to that awkward dinner party where you couldn’t think of any other way to kick off a friendly chat. We’ve all dreaded starting conversations plenty of times, and in professional settings or parties, many times. But it's not all that difficult if you follow simple tricks and practice them. Are you shy and want to confidently start conversations? Or perhaps you're trying to overcome being an introvert and would like ideas for how to get speaking practice. Dealing with unhappy customers is never easy. But, despite the headaches, angry customers are good for business — you just need to know how to relate to them! The simple thing is that your business will not succeed if your customers are dissatisfied. An angry customer is convinced that your company neither cares nor listens to them. An unhappy customer feels that your product failed to meet their expectations. A demanding customer thinks highly of them and wants you to treat them differently. When faced with an angry customer, avoid the (natural) tendency to justify your position. Instead, understand that they're merely feeling undervalued and attempting to control the situation. Dealing with angry customers can be difficult but angry, demanding, or hard to please customers are beneficial to your company’s success by providing opportunities to improve your business. try these simple tricks I'm sharing and it will sound simpler than you think! Many customers want to be heard and for their problems to be understood. By actively listening to a customer’s concerns, you can see an alternative point of view on how your business can improve a product or service and help to improve the structure of your business. No company is exempt from having difficult customers, but allowing your customers to be heard and understood can increase brand loyalty, product or services, and conflict resolution training skills.

Hey, ever feel like you're stumbling over your words? Turns out, it might not just be about what you're saying, but how you're holding yourself. But hey, there's more to it than just posture! Let me tell you a secret: the best off-the-cuff speakers? They're actually the ones who've done a bit of prep. "Ever been hit by those 'stolen spotlight' moments? They're like unwanted guests crashing your party. But hey, here's the scoop: interruptions aren't just a nuisance, they're a chance to shine. Yup, you heard it right! There are savvy ways to tackle them head-on and still ace your message. Whether you're chatting one-on-one or leading a group pow-wow, there are hacks to keep from being steamrolled. Here's the deal: when you're constantly cut off, keep on talking. How you handle those interruptions? That's your moment to shine, baby. It's what sets you apart and gives you that speaker swagger. And hey, interruptions aren't always bad news. They could be questions from your audience – a golden opportunity! Take it in your stride. Just like Bill Clinton did when his own phone rang during a speech. Talk about smooth operator! So, embrace the interruptions and show 'em who's boss." Now, after 25 years of training folks in communication skills, I've noticed a common thread. It's basically all about spreading good vibes, making sure everyone gets where the other person is coming from, and making sure everyone feels good about the convo. When you communicate positively, you're being constructive, supportive, and just generally bringing those good feels into the mix.   Now, when it comes to getting your point across at work, being assertive is where it's at. Hey, got a big presentation on the horizon? Feeling overwhelmed by all the content you have to cover? Worried about whether what you say will actually be valuable to your audience? I get it, starting can be tough when you're drowning in information and unsure where to begin. And I know, the clock is ticking, adding to the pressure. Top of it, you worry that you might end up rambling or waffling on! It's a common fear. Rambling occurs when you haven't prepared well or when your notes aren't helping you stay on track. It's like talking a lot without really saying anything substantial. Let's call it the "Waffle Trap" – speaking without a clear point or going on when you've already made your point. So, how do we avoid this trap and speak engagingly and in an impactful manner? Learn this, and a master strategy which works wonderfully well to control all that unwanted rambling! Someone rightly said, "The mind is a wonderful thing. It starts working the minute you're born and never stops working until you get up to speak in public." Do you think these stars were always stars? Do you think people always let up for them when they walked on the stage? Do you think the huge round of applause is that they hear today always existed? Nope! They used the STAR method! According to Nancy Duarte, a STAR moment should “dramatically drive the big idea home” Your audience should always leave your presentation with something they’ll always remember. Having said that, what does it actually take to create a memorable STAR moment? This episode is all about that, just with some add ons! How often are you speaking to someone new, feeling like the conversation’s going pretty well, and then… Silence hits. You don’t know what to say. They don’t know what to say. This is so awkward. What do you do? Conversations are a dance of words, where each person knows when to step forward and when to step back. Chances are, those conversations moved smoothly from one speaker to the next, and naturally from one topic to another. There was no sense of "What do I say now?" or "Am I supposed to talk next?" You and the other people in the conversation felt free to enjoy spending time with each other instead of worrying about how to make the conversation work. This is a skill that you need to master because it is a real life skill! I shared two strategies in part I & II of this series. Today, I'm sharing the super cool strategy, mastery of which will ensure your conversations keep flowing naturally and never run dry! "When ever I talk to someone new. It always dies after the introduction. I have no idea why. I literally feel awful because I know that I can talk to people and I have the confidence to approach people. But I never have any idea what to say." ....... I hear this from clients, all the time! The best conversations always have both interlocutors bouncing off one another's statements. So, if you're struggling, just remember that it might not be your fault, at least not completely :). This podcast and particularly, this episode is for you if your conversations keep running dry! Who said it was easy to keep conversations going! However, it's not all that difficult if you use the strategy I'm going to share today! In most cases, you can use what the other person says to keep the conversation going. In communication lingo, “what they give you” is called free-information. So, instead of constantly thinking up new things to talk about, you simply use what they give you. People leak free-information all the time. You just need to be more open to hearing it. When you notice something of interest in the conversation, comment on it or ask a question to open up a new path in the interaction. You’ll be amazed how liberating it is to enter a conversation knowing they will give you what you need to continue! If you’ve never learned how to keep a conversation flowing, it most likely has hurt your social life and even your work life. We want to help you improve this part of your life. And once you know how to keep the thoughts and words flowing, you’ll be surprised at how many more doors open to friendship, activities, and joy in your life. I shared one strategy last week. I'm going to share one right here. Another follow up strategy will finally complete the top three strategies on how to master the art of never letting your conversations run dry! Starting a conversation is one thing. Continuing it, without letting it run cold, another. This podcast is all about mastering that skill! The secret to keeping up a conversation is to be interested in the person you're speaking to. "When ever I talk to someone new. It always dies after the introduction. I have no idea why........I literally feel awful because I know that I can talk to people and I have the confidence to approach people. But I never have any idea what to say." This episode is an answer to just that! It'll help develop meaningful connections with friends, partners, and co-workers. Once you master this skill, you can easily have long conversations, with the other person doing the heavy lifting of talking. No matter who you are, it can be hard to have interesting conversations—even the best talkers run out of steam every now and again. Let's learn it right here! this episode has three parts. Don't forget to check out the next two, in the following two weeks. There's an intentional segregation, so that you can practice the technique shared, and share the progress in the comments! I lost my dad in the February of 2023. So, this podcast is dedicate to him, in celebration of the life he lived well. I don't know if this podcast is appropriate to share with everyone because it's very personal. Having said that, I have never been 'politically correct' and always spoken my heart out. So, sharing this, is like sharing my grief, my pain, and how I'm coping with it. I thought about my dad's meaningful contributions in my life, and put the top three in this podcast. I hope this resonates with some of you. A lot of sections, in here, are spoken impromptu, because my hand trembled in pain, as I attempted to write it. With gratitude to all my listeners. With love, Sarika sarikasingh.in https://linktr.ee/sarikasingh #parent #dad #dadsdaughter #daughters #losingsomeone #loss #healing #soul #mentalhealth #coping #death #letgo #emotional #speakup
Who likes blame? No one....right! and who blames.....well, all of us blame others more than we think we do! Blaming other people is an easy way out. This denial of responsibility also denies us control of a given situation. Blame means less work as when we blame, we don't have to be held accountable. Some of us perpetually get blamed. Especially for things we didn't do! What's the way out? What do we do? How to handle the toxic blame-game?  This episode brings in smart strategies to handle the situation when someone blames you. Believe me, these are not rocket science, and yet, they help us become better communicators!  If you like this podcast, subscribe and spread the good word by telling a friend. "Make me laugh & I'm your friend!" someone rightly said! Humor proves highly effective in creating a human connection between conflicting parties, thereby diffusing tension. Mahatma Gandhi once said, "If it was not for my sense of humor, the continuous disharmony and animosity would have pushed me towards madness long ago." Humor, a crucial cognitive skill, possesses the ability to address conflicts in unexpected ways. Improving relationships entails mastering the art of employing humor and play to navigate through disagreements, alleviate stress, and foster communication that strengthens connections. Okay, so it's no replacement for going to the gym, but one study found that laughing for just 10 to 15 minutes a day can burn approximately 40 calories—which could be enough to lose three or four pounds over the course of a year. :) When used with the right intent, consistently succeeds; it provides context to disputes and humanizes even the most severe circumstances.   Stay tuned and enjoy!
