Episode 12 - Our Season 2 finale. We speak to Hetain Patel, a prolific full-time artist with a diverse 20 year career.
We chat about his experiences over the last 20 years, what motivated him to just keep making... and it would be criminal if we didn't talk a litte bit about Spiderman.
Motivational, uplifting and always real, we hope you enjoy this bumper finale episode of BANG ON!
Hetain Patel is an English visual artist specialising in performance, sculpture, video, and photography. His work has been exhibited in Norway, India, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. In addition to sci-fi and mainstream-influenced works (including work associated with pop-culture superheroes such as Spider-Man), Patel experiments with addressing problems of multiculturalism and self-acceptance.

This week we discuss complaining…Where does it help, and where does it hurt us in developing an art career? Are the memes all right? Can the solidarity of a good moan create the changes we want to see? This and more!

Let writing into your life...
We chat with Laura Robertson, a working-class art critic, writer, editor and award-winning lecturer based in Liverpool, represented by United Agents, London.
She co-founded The Double Negative online arts magazine with Mike Pinnington in 2011, and has been commissioning and platforming under-the-radar people, projects and places ever since – including under-represented and early-career culture writers from the North of England.
This episode is, as you may expect, all about WRITING. Writing doesn't always feel like it fits into an art practice, but Laura tells us all about how letting writing into your life and art can be transformative in more ways than one.

Contemporary, independent arts and culture criticism since 2011: platforming writers and artists from the North of England.
We are a Liverpool-based magazine (online and occasional print) featuring critical analysis, interviews, reviews, essays, experimental texts and commentary on under-the-radar culture.
We came, we went, we got the t-shirt... this week is all about arts education!
Taking a step back from the deep of the art world, we have a think about our journey before we got there, and discuss education. The good, the bad, the ugly. What were our favourite moments, what are we frustrated that we didn't learn, and what do we want future students to take from our experience? This and more!

What is participatory art really about?
We chat with Grace Collins (they/them), an artist and artworker. They create art with other people, support creative activity, ask lots of questions and listen to people’s answers. With a bit of luck this means creating spaces for justice, challenging and expanding learned ideas of what the world is allowed to look like.
Grace tells us about their practice, and dives more deeply than we ever have before into the power of collaboration in the sector - come swim in the socially engaged deep with us, the water is fine!

Don't they say an artist by any other name would smell as sweet?
Either way, what does it mean to have an artistic identity? Can you be considered a professional without your practice having a 'recognisable' image? How much can we push the 'rules' that exist around making art to sell, and developing a career in the industry? This and more to come!

You might say that this artist is presenting a new generation of Pop Art...
We chat with Jan Erichsen, a Norwegian contemporary artist most well-known for his "destruction videos" online. The videos most commonly depict elaborate methods of popping balloons, but other recurring themes include crushing dry pasta and taco shells, destroying household items, and wearing bizarre "hats" made from food.
We find out what makes him tick, and even play along with the shenanigans a little ourselves...

In a BANG ON very special episode, we chat with Gina Warburton, Curator at The Whitaker Museum, straight from the STASHED exhibition space. STASHED presents the personal art collection of Short Supply. As long as they’ve been artists, they’ve been collectors.Open: 15th November - 23rd February 2025(Wed - Sun 10am - 4pm, Thurs 10am - 8pm)The Whitaker Museum & Art GalleryWhitaker Park, Haslingden RoadBB4 6RE“These are the things we can’t take our eyes off, the art we want to hold in our hands, the things we want to make sure don’t end up in a skip.”STASHED asks why more artists don’t consider themselves collectors, and what would happen if they did? Riffing off the Cabinet of Curiosities and bringing their living room to life in the gallery, this exhibition invites you to consider what you’ve got stashed in the attic, and questions how the art market really works (among friends making birthday gifts and swapping zines for paintings). So, search BANG ON in your streaming app to listen, like, follow, and subscribe.
