When most people think about blood pressure, they think about a once-a-year reading at a doctor’s office. But one measurement on one day doesn’t tell you much about your cardiovascular health. Just like a single fasting glucose number doesn’t reveal your metabolic state, a one-off blood pressure check is largely meaningless. Blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day based on stress, sleep, exercise, hydration, and countless other factors. And even more important: the cuff on your arm measures brachial pressure — not the central pressure your heart and organs actually experience. That distinction matters. The true risk isn’t just the number on a cuff, it’s how elastic your arteries are and how much pressure your aorta is under. Elastic vessels absorb the shock of each heartbeat, while stiff ones reflect it back toward the heart and raise central pressure. That’s why arterial stiffness is such a strong predictor of cardiovascular risk, especially as we age or when diet and lifestyle accelerate inflammation and plaque buildup. In this episode, I explain how modern devices can go beyond a simple systolic/diastolic reading. Using pulse wave analysis, they can estimate central blood pressure, pulse pressure, augmentation pressure, augmentation index, and oxygen supply-demand balance in the heart muscle. I share some of my own readings — including cases where a cuff reading looked “high” but the deeper markers showed excellent elasticity and low central pressure. It’s a reminder that context matters far more than one isolated number. The takeaway is clear: don’t let a single reading define your health. Look at patterns over time. Pay attention to central pressure and vessel elasticity. And above all, address the lifestyle drivers that really move the needle — diet, sleep, movement, stress, and balancing electrolytes like sodium and potassium. Elevated blood pressure is not written in your genes; it’s usually written in your habits. Most people with gut issues get fed the same script: It’s genetic. It’s lifelong. The best you can do is try to manage the symptoms. But in this episode, holistic nutritionist and physician consultant Josh Dech pushes back on that conventional wisdom, arguing that what we typically call “autoimmune” disease is often a sign of the body protecting itself from toxins lodged in tissue – not a genetic defect that leads the body to attack itself. After working with hundreds of Crohn’s, colitis and severe IBS cases, his core message is refreshingly simple: we get sick for three reasons – toxins, microbes, and deficiencies — and our health returns to its natural baseline when we address those in the right order. If you’ve been told your gut issues are incurable, or if you’re stuck swinging between flareups and endless prescriptions, this conversation will give you a framework for finally addressing the root causes of the problem. Notably, Dech explains why drainage should come before detox, what to do if money is tight, and where hope fits in when your “normal” keeps getting worse. Tune in, take notes, and start with a few levers you can actually pull this week — fresh air and a walk, better water, real food and sleep. I recently spent a week in Austria, bouncing between my grandparents’ farmhouse and the alpine trails I grew up on. And it hit me how stark the contrast is between the foundation they built and the environment kids are growing up in today. My grandparents are 92 and 93, still living on their own. They had decades of clean food, pure alpine water, long days outside and zero WiFi. And then, over the last 10-20 years, an Americanized creep of seed oils, ultra-processed snacks and glyphosate started showing up in force. Fortunately, for my grandparents, their health trajectory was already set. But the sad reality is that today’s Austria looks a lot more like the U.S. than the one I left in 2007. You see it in the soda cases and packaged snacks; in childhood obesity, which simply wasn’t common when I was a kid; and in the push for convenience over quality. On paper, the cardiovascular stats are surprising, with heart issues accounting for about a third of Austrian deaths vs roughly a fifth in the U.S. But context matters. Life expectancy is higher in Austria, smoking remains far more prevalent, alcohol is a daily staple for many, and coding practices differ. And while European rules do more to keep out junk — i.e., no drug ads to consumers, tighter oversight of additives, a precautionary approach — you still find head-scratchers like the EU’s renewed glyphosate approval, and the official dietary guidance in Austria is every bit as misguided as America’s: more grains, less meat, avoid saturated fat. Meanwhile, the water story flips the other way; Austria’s alpine spring water really is great, while here I won’t drink unfiltered tap water. The throughline I keep coming back to is the environment. Austrians still walk and bike more, take real vacations and spend time outside. But the trend is heading in the wrong direction. My takeaway for both sides of the Atlantic is the same: don’t wait for guidelines or brands to save you. Vote with your fork and your feet. Buy directly from farmers when you can. Filter your water. Create a home rhythm that makes movement and sunlight normal. Ignore food-industry talking points. And recreate the conditions humans have traditionally thrived in, focusing on better food, cleaner water and more time outside. If that resonates, start small this week. Audit what’s in your pantry, pick one item you can swap for a simpler version, take your next meeting while on a walk, and move dinner earlier so your sleep isn’t collateral damage. Then share this episode with a friend who still thinks “Europe is automatically healthier” or that “America is too far gone.” The future isn’t predetermined; it’s built choice by choice. Most people have been told at some point that the way to “detox” is to buy a cleanse, live on juice for a week, or chase down some supplement that promises to pull toxins out of the body. But the reality is very different. In this episode, I unpack what detoxification really looks like, and explain why your body already comes equipped with everything it needs to keep itself clean — provided you don’t get in its way. How does it work? Instead of imagining the liver as a sponge full of toxins or assuming your kidneys need a crash reset, it helps to understand how these systems actually function. The liver runs chemical conversions that neutralize harmful compounds and make them easier to excrete, the kidneys filter waste into urine, and the lungs, skin, and gut provide additional routes to push toxins out. From breath to sweat to stool, detox is happening every single day. The key to efficient detoxification is to limit your exposure to things your body struggles to process — like excessive alcohol, ultra-processed foods, endocrine-disrupting chemicals in plastics and skincare, and antinutrients in plants that place unnecessary stress on the kidneys and gut. Choosing nutrient-dense animal foods, prioritizing hydration, spending time in the sauna, managing stress, and maintaining quality sleep all give your body the margin it needs to carry out its own repair work. In other words, when you live in a way that doesn’t constantly overload these systems, detox becomes effortless and ongoing. If you’ve ever wondered whether you need to “reset” with a cleanse, this conversation is a reminder that the reset button is built in. The real challenge is removing modern obstacles so the body can do the work it’s designed for. Listen in to rethink what detox really means, and consider sharing this episode with someone who’s still chasing quick fixes. In this episode, I explore whether following an ancestral diet and traditional eating habits is enough to keep us healthy today. While our grandparents thrived on simple meals, the reality of modern food quality, hidden environmental toxins, and processed foods inflammation paint a different picture. I share how chronic stress and health challenges, along with changes like A1 vs A2 milk casein, affect our bodies in ways past generations didn’t face. We’ll look at why homesteading health problems persist despite “clean eating,” and how a slow living lifestyle can help bridge the genetic mismatch modern diet creates. Tune in to uncover the real reasons why eating like your grandparents won’t save you. In this episode, I share a fascinating 1950s endurance experiment with rats that uncovered what researchers called an “anti-fatigue factor” in beef liver. The results highlight why organ meats like liver are nature’s ultimate multivitamin and how even small micronutrient deficiencies can wreck ATP energy production, mitochondrial health, and overall performance. I’ll walk you through what the study revealed, how it ties into modern fatigue and performance issues, and why I believe high-quality liver supplements are one of the simplest ways to cover nutritional gaps. If you’ve ever wondered about beef liver benefits or why organ meats nutrition matters, this story will change how you think about natural energy. For years I thrived on two large meals a day – a late-morning breakfast after training and an early dinner. And the results spoke for themselves: stable blood sugar, excellent insulin sensitivity, low body fat, and plenty of energy. But I began noticing a drawback. Those evening meals, heavy in protein and fat, kept my digestive system working for hours after I went to bed, raising my heart rate, lowering my HRV, and occasionally causing acid reflux. Shifting dinner earlier didn’t help much, and I wasn’t hungry first thing in the morning, so forcing an earlier breakfast felt just as unnatural. In this episode, I break down why I’ve shifted from two meals to three, and what that change has done for my energy, recovery, and sleep quality. I walk through the benefits I saw from a two-meal pattern, the specific problems that crept in over time, and how spreading my daily protein and calorie intake across breakfast, lunch, and dinner has improved digestion, lowered nighttime stress on my body, and left me waking up more refreshed. The takeaway isn’t that everyone should eat three times a day – or twice, or just once. It’s that meal timing and frequency should fit your body’s needs, your goals, and your lifestyle. The right pattern for you is the one that leaves you feeling and performing your best. For me right now, that means three balanced meals, each big enough to satisfy without overloading my digestion before sleep. We share the exact non-toxic swaps we’ve made over the years (without breaking the bank), and why some “clean” labels still aren’t enough. We also dive into feminine health, EMF mitigation, and the real reason birth control might be one of the most damaging drugs women are prescribed — and what to do instead. This is Part 2 of our series on everyday toxins and how to avoid them — simple shifts that protect your hormones, fertility, skin, and long-term health. In this episode, Kathy and I unpack how we reduced our exposure to environmental toxins—from improving tap water safety and installing water filtration systems, to replacing plastic containers and upgrading to non-toxic cookware. We talk about chlorine exposure in showers and pools, how we built a more toxin-free home, and why choosing organic food and chemical-free living matters more than you think. Got questions or already making changes at home? Drop a comment—we’d love to hear from you. When most people think about saving the planet, they picture cutting back on meat and eating more plants. But what if the story we’ve been told about how plant-based diets equate to sustainability is missing half the truth (and hiding a massive environmental cost)? In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I pull back the curtain on the industrial food system most people never see. From the 90 billion honeybees trucked across the country each spring to pollinate almond trees to the 7.3 billion wild animals killed each year by harvest machinery, the data tells a very different story than the slogans. This isn’t about pitting vegans against meat-eaters. It’s about showing how industrial monoculture destroys soil, collapses insect populations, drains water tables, and kills countless small mammals and pollinators in the name of “clean” eating. If you’re ready to rethink food systems from the soil up, this episode is for you. 🎉 Special Announcement: Ep. 100 GIVEAWAY! 🎉 We’re celebrating 100 episodes of the Primal Shift Podcast by giving away our entire MK Supps product line (yes, even the measuring scoop!) to ONE lucky winner. For most of human history, survival depended on eating the foods that gave us the most nutrients with the least effort. That usually meant animals, which are dense in protein, fat, and bioavailable vitamins and minerals. But in recent years, we’ve been told that plants are the true superfoods. Raw kale in your smoothie? Spinach salads every day? The darker and leafier, the better, right? Not quite. In this episode, I dive into the real story behind plant-based foods and the antinutrients they contain, as well as how they compare to animal-based sources of nutrition. We’ll talk about why humans evolved to thrive on meat, how plants defend themselves with chemical compounds like oxalates, lectins and goitrogens, and what all that means for your health. And I’ll share practical tips for how to prepare the least toxic plants safely — when and if you choose to include them in your diet. After struggling with IBS for over 30 years, I fixed my gut issues through a radical shift in how I approached food. It wasn’t about chasing superfoods or stacking more supplements. It was about eliminating the things that were holding me back, and embracing the nutrient-dense, low-toxin foods that our ancestors relied on for thousands of years. If you’re eating spinach every day or downing kale smoothies because they’re “healthy,” you might want to take a closer look at what those foods are actually doing to your body. And if you’ve avoided organ meats because of the taste, I’ll share a simple way to get their benefits without having to touch a skillet. This episode isn’t about fearmongering or food dogma. It’s about reclaiming clarity, understanding what’s actually nourishing, what’s neutral, and what might be slowly working against you. It’s easy to assume that food affects everyone the same way. But when my wife Kathy and I wore continuous glucose monitors for two weeks, we learned just how different our responses actually are. For example, a bowl of curry or a few slices of sourdough bread would send her blood sugar soaring while barely impacting mine, and vice versa. We weren’t just tracking data: we were uncovering real-time insight into how our individual metabolisms, hormones, stress, and even muscle mass shape our daily health outcomes. The experiment revealed a few surprising truths. For Kathy, sourdough and rice were consistent triggers, even when paired with protein and fat. Her blood sugar spiked above 200 mg/dL and stayed elevated for hours — a clear sign that not all “healthy carbs” are created equal. For me, the biggest spike didn’t come from food at all. It came from intense physical activity — proof that exercise-induced glucose changes are an entirely different metabolic story than post-meal crashes. The differences went deeper than food. Kathy’s menstrual cycle impacted her insulin sensitivity, and my lean muscle mass gave me an edge when it came to buffering glucose. We also saw how stress, sleep and cold plunging could subtly (and sometimes dramatically) influence blood sugar trends, even in the absence of a single bite of food. None of this was about fearmongering over carbs or obsessing over numbers. Wearing a CGM isn’t a lifestyle; it’s a short-term lens into how your body actually works. And once you connect the data to how you feel — sluggish after rice, energized after steak, restless after a late-night spike — that’s when you unlock real change. If you’re serious about optimizing your health, I highly recommend trying a CGM for just a few weeks. Learn what your body thrives on. Understand what derails you. And then build your habits accordingly. Because personalized data beats generic diet advice every time. Biohacking wasn’t always about gadgets. It used to be about building a better lifestyle by fixing root causes with movement, light, food and sleep. But somewhere along the way, optimization gave way to outsourcing. Today, it’s easy to mistake a tech solution for progress when it’s really just a more expensive version of the same mistake: treating symptoms instead of addressing causes. That shift was on full display at a recent biohacking conference I attended, where nearly every product promised better sleep, more energy or deeper calm — without requiring any meaningful change. The sales pitch has become eerily similar to Big Pharma: just take this “drug” and feel better… no behavior change required. But health doesn’t work like that. Wearing blue light blocking glasses while scrolling TikTok in bed misses the point. Slapping a mood gadget around your neck doesn’t solve emotional imbalance. And leaning on sleep tech while ignoring your circadian rhythm or pounding caffeine at 4 p.m. won’t fix recovery. Tools can support change, but too often, they delay it. I use plenty of tech myself: cold plunges, saunas and wearables to name a few. But I use them with intention. If I lived near a freezing lake, I’d ditch the plunge. If tracking sleep started creating stress, I’d take the ring off. Tools are valuable only when they move us toward better habits — not when they distract us from them. Ask yourself: is this device helping you build something real, or is it letting you avoid what needs to change? That’s the litmus test. If you’re micromanaging every glucose spike or feeling anxious about your recovery score, it might be time to simplify. You can’t outsource health. You can only build it, one habit at a time. I’ve reviewed a ton of health and wellness gear over the years — some of it genuinely helpful, and some of it so absurd that I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. So in this episode, I’m doing something a little different: I’m walking you through the most useless health gadgets I’ve come across lately. Not just things I wouldn’t recommend, but things I think you should actively avoid. We’re talking Bluetooth forks that vibrate when you eat too fast. AI smoothie machines with subscription pods. Mood-tracking wearables that flash colors. And yes, cold plunge shorts… designed to make the cold plunge feel less cold. Because apparently the problem with cold therapy is that it’s uncomfortable. These devices don’t just waste your money, they also waste your intuition. They pull you further away from your own body’s feedback by outsourcing basic instincts to tech: when to eat, when to drink, how fast to chew, even how you feel. And to be honest, the idea that we need electronics to tell us these things is just… sad. We’ve gotten so out of touch that we now rely on apps to remind us to drink water and gadgets to track how salty something tastes. Health doesn’t require tech to micromanage every moment of your day. In fact, most of these gadgets just add EMFs, microplastics and confusion to your life. So in this episode, I’m calling out the worst offenders — not to shame anyone who’s tried them, but to remind you that the best solutions are usually simple, grounded, and entirely free. Let me know which ones you’ve seen (or bought!) that made you raise an eyebrow. I’d love to hear what’s on your list. Someone recently told me about a Mayo Clinic researcher who claimed that cold plunging triggers the same chemical response in the body as dying — and that, basically, you die a little every time you do it. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Apparently, cold plunging is now a near-death experience, and there’s “no credible evidence” it offers any benefits. Right. Look, I’m the first to say cold plunging isn’t a miracle cure. But this take is just flat-out absurd. So in this episode, I unpack exactly why that claim doesn’t hold water, as well as what’s really happening when you expose your body to the cold. The first time I ever stepped into near-freezing water, it was intense. But now? It’s mildly uncomfortable at worst. And the benefits I’ve seen firsthand are impossible to ignore. The reality is that like any hormetic stressor, cold exposure gets easier over time. You adapt. You become more resilient (mentally and physically). Your tolerance increases, your stress response improves, and you start to notice things like better energy, stronger immunity, and more emotional stability. That’s not dying. That’s growth. Could you overdo it? Sure. But that’s true of anything. Done intelligently, cold plunging is one of the simplest, most accessible tools for building resilience and reclaiming your edge. You don’t need a double-blind trial to tell you what your body already knows. So if someone tries to scare you off with talk of “chemical cocktails of death,” ignore the noise. Try it yourself. Start slow. Listen to your body. And maybe — just maybe — don’t take cold plunging advice from someone who’s never taken a cold shower in their life. Living healthy doesn’t have to mean going broke. Yes, pasture-raised eggs, non-toxic furniture, and sauna setups can get ridiculously expensive — but that doesn’t mean you have to compromise your health just because you’re on a budget. In this episode, I walk through a number of practical swaps and cost-saving strategies you can leverage to live healthy without overspending. From cold plunging in natural bodies of water instead of buying a $5,000 tub (no, it’s not the same, but it’s close enough if you need to save money), to skipping overpriced olive oil and cooking with butter, there are tradeoffs that make sense without sacrificing your well-being. I also talk about how we’ve drastically cut down on laundry costs using an ozone system, and why buying secondhand furniture might be better for your health than brand-new. A lot of this comes down to avoiding the trap of “health through consumerism.” You don’t need a high-end gadget to reduce EMFs — just turn off your Wi-Fi. You don’t need to subscribe to every wellness app — just go outside and breathe. It’s not about being cheap. It’s about spending where it matters, skipping what doesn’t, and remembering that the simplest solutions are often the most powerful. With so many conflicting studies and experts shouting from every corner, it’s easy to lose sight of one simple truth: your body knows best. In this episode of the Primal Shift Podcast, I’m calling out the noise around “good” vs. “bad” foods and diving straight into the powerful signals your body sends every time you eat. From unexplained breakouts and weird cravings to stubborn heartburn and crashing energy levels, your physiology is practically begging you to pay attention. We’ll explore how issues like bloating, bad breath, headaches, and even mood swings can be early warning signs that a particular food isn’t working for you — no matter what the latest scientific study or diet guru claims. Yes, science and ancestral wisdom matter, but they mean little if you feel lousy every time you bite into certain foods. Think of it as detective work: noticing patterns between what you ate and how you slept, how your skin looks, or whether you’re getting random joint pain or weird body odor. If you’ve ever felt guilty because some “healthy” item (like sourdough or raw milk) just doesn’t sit right with you, this episode is your permission slip to trust yourself. It’s not about demonizing specific foods; it’s about becoming so in tune with your body that you can instantly tell the difference between a mild craving and a genuine sign of hunger — or a subtle symptom and a flashing red light. When in doubt, remember: if it doesn’t feel good, it probably isn’t good for you. Your unique biology is more than just numbers on a lab test or words in a research paper… it’s an entire feedback system that never stops working. So give yourself the freedom to listen, experiment, and (yes) sometimes say no to foods that simply don’t serve you.
