After a stunning day for Michigan athletics in which head coach Sherrone Moore was fired and then later arrested in an alleged assault investigation, Free Press' Tony Garcia and Shawn Windsor talk outside the Washtenaw County Jail about what it all means. Tony and Andrew are back to discuss what went wrong for Michigan football in its 27-9 loss to the Buckeyes. Does this mean Michigan needs to reinvent itself under Sherrone Moore after losing its three biggest games this year? And what would that look like? Then the guys talk about freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood and why his growth seemed to stunt in the second half of the season. Is this another sign that Michigan needs to evolve offensively? Plus, Tony breaks down Michigan's 2026 recruiting class and some of the big names the Wolverines were able to land to help them sit just outside the top-10 nationally in another really solid class for Moore. And last but not least, the guys had to talk about Michigan basketball's routing of San Diego State, Auburn and Gonzaga in the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas, where the Wolverines put together about as impressive of a three-game stretch as possible. Just how sustainable is it? Read all about the Michigan Wolverines by heading to our website at freep.com/sports.
We've been talking about it for weeks and it's finally here. Michigan, fighting for its College Football Playoff life, hosting undefeated Ohio State in Ann Arbor. Tony and Andrew open the show by talking about Michigan's impressive beat down of Maryland in Week 13 and why there were some more positive signs that Michigan will be able to move the ball against the Buckeyes (at least more than most teams). Then the guys dive into "The Game" and why the stakes literally couldn't be higher this year for a variety of reasons. And last but not least, Tony and Andrew make their predictions for the season finale and determine what Michigan must do to pull off another upset. Another week, another too-close-for-comfort win for Michigan football. And even still, the Wolverines are right on track for an epic clash against Ohio State to determine the College Football Playoff. Michigan turned the ball over five times and needed a last second field goal to beat Northwestern, but it still goes in the win column, much like the ugly Purdue game the week before or the MSU one the week before that. Tony and Andrew open the show by discussing why this Michigan football team is hard to understand, before talking about some real positives from the win over Northwestern (looking at you, Andrew Marsh). Then the guys quickly discuss the Maryland matchup and what's at stake. After the break (22:51) the guys dive into Michigan football's threat of conference independence from Michigan Board of Regents member Jordan Acker. If the private equity-Big Ten deal goes through, is Michigan football really a candidate to become the next Notre Dame? The first order of business for Michigan football during its bye week was to get healthy, but not far behind that was to hit a hard reset for star freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood. The two games before the bye week against Michigan State and Purdue were not pretty for Michigan's passing attack and the week off presented an opportunity for a reboot. Will it be enough to carry the Wolverines to a victory over Northwestern? Tony and Andrew discuss what should be a fun game at Wrigley Field and make their predictions for the game and for the big games across the country. The most glorious (and tiring) part of the college sports season is upon us, as Michigan football is in the meat of its season and the basketball team's regular season slate has started. Michigan basketball's season opener against Oakland was so impressive, Tony and Andrew had to start the show by breaking it down. Michigan smashed Oakland, 121-78, and had its highest scoring first half in school history as just about everyone was clicking on all cylinders in the blowout victory. So just how good can this Michigan hoops team be? The guys break that down and get into the X's and O's of how Michigan was able to look so dominant. In the second half of the show, Tony and Andrew take a big-picture look at Michigan football's first nine games the season by looking backwards and looking forwards. What's the biggest question answered by the team in the first nine games? And what is the biggest question this team still has to answer? Michigan football just keeps taking care of business as its path to the College Football Playoff continues to solidify. Tony and Andrew open the show by discussing Michigan's win over Michigan State and how the Wolverines were able to beat the Spartans while not playing their best. Freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood didn't even crack 100 yards against MSU but the Wolverines still comfortably won. Is that cause for concern long-term? Then the guys discuss how more and more, it's looking like Michigan's entire season is going to come down to the final week of the season when they host Ohio State at the Big House. Tony and Andrew also preview the Purdue game and make predictions for the game before a quick look at the Michigan basketball program who is 1-1 in the exhibition slate. Are the expectations around this Michigan team the highest they've been in a decade? Read all about the Michigan Wolverines by heading to our website at freep.com/sports.
The boys from the Spartan Speak podcast, Graham Couch and Chris Solari, joined Andrew Birkle and Tony Garcia for a special crossover episode of 'Hail Yes!' and 'Spartan Speak' to preview this weekend's Michigan State-Michigan football game. Oh how quickly things can change. Just a week ago, Tony and Andrew were discussing a Michigan team that looked flat and overmatched on the road against USC. One game later, and the discussion is entirely different. Michigan played one of its most complete games under Sherrone Moore against Washington in Week 8, beating the Huskies 24-7 at the Big House. The guys open the show by discussing Michigan's impressive showing over Washington and how the Wolverines are playing entering the rivalry game vs. MSU. Plus, what years can you compare this year's matchup to? And do the Wolverines have anything to worry about with MSU? Then in the second half of the show, the guys make predictions for the big game and discuss why the narrative around this year's rivalry game is so weird, before making picks for some huge games around the country this week. Last but not least, Tony shares a boots-on-the-ground report from Michigan's exhibition loss to Cincinnati and talks about what went wrong. Michigan football's game against USC was the "pendulum swing" game of the year, but unfortunately for U-M fans, the season swung in the wrong way. Michigan was clobbered by USC in the second half, losing the game 31-13 and putting the Wolverines back into must-win mode. If Michigan wants to get back into the College Football Playoff conversation, it'll probably have to be perfect from here. That starts this week with a big matchup against a Washington team that'll provide a lot of matchup problems for the Wolverines. Tony and Andrew open the show by discussing what went wrong for Michigan on the road at USC and what Sherrone Moore's team must fix before Washington. Then after the break, the guys make predictions for the Washington game and share their picks for a fun slate of college football games this weekend. Michigan football overcame a too-close-for-comfort first half against Wisconsin with a dominant effort after the break to beat the Badgers 24-10 in Week 6 and now turns its sights to one of the biggest games of the season. The Wolverines will travel this week to Los Angeles for the pendulum swing game of the season against USC at the LA Memorial Coliseum. Tony and Andrew open the show by discussing what we learned from Michigan's win over Wisconsin and why freshman Andrew Marsh's breakout is so important for this team. Then the guys discuss the USC game and why it might just be the biggest game of the season for the Wolverines and determining their track to the College Football Playoff. And last but not least, the Tony and Andrew make their predictions for the Michigan-USC matchup and share their picks for some of the other big games around the country. The "Hail Yes" crew is back to preview Michigan's matchup against a struggling Wisconsin team who is over a two touchdown underdog against the Wolverines. Tony and Andrew open the show by talking about where Michigan stands at the 1/3rd mark of the season and what the Wolverines did during a bye week. Plus, what has gone wrong for the Badgers and how did they get here? And in what ways might the Badgers challenge Michigan? Then after a quick break, the guys make predictions for the Michigan-Wisconsin game and share their picks for the biggest games around the country this week. After falling flat in their first road test of the season in Week 2 against Oklahoma, it was a much different story for Bryce Underwood and the Michigan Wolverines in Week 4. The Wolverines pretty much controlled the game against Nebraska on the road from start to finish, and Andrew and Tony open the show by discussing what we learned about this year's team in a ground-and-pound domination. Then, with 33% of the season done, the guys discuss the positives at the negatives that they've seen so far, and talk about why they think the schedule continues to set up better and better for the Wolverines. To close the show, the guys make their picks for a loaded college football slate and talk about the biggest games this weekend and how they might impact the Wolverines. Michigan football decided to take the training wheels off freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood in Week 3 against Central Michigan and it paid immediate dividends. A week after the offense struggled mightily against Oklahoma on the road, the Wolverines compiled 625 yards of total offense as Underwood passed for 235 yards and rushed for 114 more. Needless to say, the Wolverine won't be "taking the air out of the ball ever again, not with this guy and taking snaps," according to acting head coach Biff Poggi. Andrew and Tony open the show by discussing the lessons learned from the Central Michigan blowout victory, and then play a game of "overreaction/underreaction/proper reaction" from Michigan football's first three weeks. Then after a quick break, the guys talk all things Nebraska and a fun matchup against sophomore Dylan Raiola, the son of former Detroit Lions offensive lineman Dominic Raiola. Will the lessons learned from Week 3 be enough to pull off a tough road victory? And last but not least, the guys make their predictions for the Michigan-Nebraska matchup and share their picks for the rest of the big games this weekend. Week 2 is in the books and Michigan football's huge game against Oklahoma did not go how the Wolverines would've hoped. In Bryce Underwood's first ever road start, the Wolverines struggled in most departments and were beaten, 24-13, by a tough Sooners squad. Tony and Andrew open the show by discussing what went wrong for the Wolverines in Norman and where they must go from here to get the train back on the tracks. Then after the break, the guys discuss the Central Michigan game and why Biff Poggi was named as the interim head coach for the CMU and Nebraska games. And last but not least, it's time for some college football picks for a huge Week 3 slate. Read all about the Michigan Wolverines by heading to our website at freep.com/sports.
It was a successful 2025 debut for Michigan football in Week 1 vs. New Mexico, with the Wolverines cruising to a 34-17 victory and freshman sensation Bryce Underwood looking every bit the part. Tony and Andrew open the show by discussing Underwood's impressive composure, his arm strength and other takeaways from the Week 1 victory. Then the guys welcome Ryan Aber, the OU beat writer for The Oklahoman, to talk about a huge matchup at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in Norman. What's the vibe surrounding this Oklahoma squad? Is quarterback John Mateer legit? And what can Underwood expect against the Sooners' defense in his first career road start? Last but not least, Tony and Andrew make their "much-anticipated" picks and predictions for the Michigan game, the MSU showdown with BC and more. Michigan football is back! The Wolverines will be flying out of the tunnel at the Big House on Saturday for a highly-anticipated first game against New Mexico where we get to see Bryce Underwood making his Michigan debut. With just 10 days until the start of the season, the "Hail Yes" crew breaks down the 10 most important players for Michigan football this season. It's no secret Bryce Underwood is on the list, but just how high is he? And is Michigan finding a resurgence on offense more important, or maintaining an elite level on defense? Then in the second half of the show, the guys each share one on-the-field birthday wish Bryce Underwood might ask for to celebrate turning 18. Plus, Tony shares his thoughts on Michigan continuing its heater on the recruiting trail after landing Savion Hiter, the No. 1 running back recruit in the country. Flash the bat signal, it's time for an emergency podcast! We knew it was coming eventually, but the NCAA finally handed down its punishment to Michigan on Friday. While Michigan did receive a laundry list of punishments, the school avoided the ones that matter most. The NCAA did NOT give Michigan a postseason ban or vacate any wins. Tony and Andrew get together for a quick breakdown of everything you need to know about the announcement, including whether Michigan got off easy.
As the Michigan football season creeps closer and closer with kickoff just 17 days away, Tony and Andrew are back for another episode of "Hail Yes" during the dog days of camp. Michigan coach Sherrone Moore spoke with the media for one of the final times of fall camp on Tuesday and gave an inside look at when he plans to name Bryce Underwood, Mikey Keene or Jake Garcia as the starting quarterback, and it'll be before opening kickoff. For now, it looks like Underwood continues to lead the way. Then, the guys talk about Michigan's mantra for the season, "today, not tomorrow," what it means and why it has a hidden benefit that you may not think of. Then after a quick break, Tony and Andrew talk about why these next few days are so important for Michigan football's roster battles and which units fans should really lock in on. Plus, what to make of the alleged gambling situation surrounding Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer, who the Wolverines will face in Week 2. And last but not least, Tony got to taste all the food that will be offered at the Big House this year and gives fans an idea of which ones they've got to check out.
