The HIMALI Podcast Episode 4:In this episode of the HIMALI Podcast, HIMALI CoFounder Tendi Sherpa sits down with NASA astronaut and former SpaceX medical director Anil Menon to explore the fascinating intersections between space, wilderness medicine, and high altitude mountaineering. Drawing on his background in emergency medicine and experience with the Himalayan Rescue Association, Menon shares his unique perspective on what it takes to stay alive in the extreme conditions of both space and high-altitude climbs. The two also reflect on their own harrowing experiences from their separate relief efforts in Nepal following the devastating 2015 earthquake.Menon, who’s preparing for the upcoming Expedition 75 to the International Space Station, discusses the vital role of teamwork and mental resilience in high-stress environments. Tendi, with his wealth of experience as a seasoned mountaineer, opens up about the worsening conditions on Everest, driven by the impacts of climate change, and the growing unpredictability climbers now face. Together, they explore how both space and mountain expeditions push human limits, challenging the mind and body in extreme ways, and the invaluable lessons learned in these high-stakes environments. The conversation also touches on the power of flexibility and helpfulness in crisis situations, the importance of mental preparation, and how both astronauts and mountaineers have learned to embrace discomfort to grow stronger. Menon also shares insights into space exploration’s expanding opportunities, and both discuss the deep connections formed through adversity and shared purpose - whether it’s in a space capsule, or at the top of the world.Look out for part two next year, where Anil Menon and Tendi Sherpa plan to exchange experiences from space to Everest, continuing their conversation on pushing boundaries and cultivating resilience in the most extreme environments.www.himali.com
