1st episode of a new year (2025) and a new season! Ricky, Piotr and Erwann do a 2024 year in review. The episode hits with Erwann playing "Love Theme from The Godfather" on a music box, he gifted the others for Christmas. Then he complains about not having a nickname. The boys discuss their goals for the year: Ricky and Erwann don't want to put things off and Piotr wants to get rejected more and something about exposing himself. Then talk turns to movies from 2024 they enjoyed (and hated), if Erwann succeeded in watching a movie-a-day in 2024 and what to expect from Cut to Reveal in 2025. Episode 30: Piotr tries to sell Ricardo & Erwann on jumping ship and abandoning their NLE of choice for the upcoming, revolutionary (his words), cloud based NLE: "Sequence". Erwann details why Final Cut finally releasing a big update is something that gave him back hope in a better life, as Apple embraces AI to catch up to its competitors. Finally Ricardo talks about the polish Camerimage Film Festival, where for the first in real life he got the chance to meet Piotr (and Cate Blanchett)! Episode 29: The gang investigates the Rashomon Effect ! They discuss the Kurosawa movie that started it all, the unreliable narrator theory, how the psychology field seized the term, and how Rashomon's legacy can be felt to this day in cinema, through movies like Ridley Scott's "The Last Duel" or David Fincher "Gone Girl". Ricardo also forces his co-hosts to listen to his painful childhood memories, Piotr acts as a game show host when linking the Rashomon effect to the Mandela effect, and Erwann bores the hell out of everyone by talking about his love for an old TV show that noone cares for.Can you think of other movies or TV shows that use the Rashomon effect ?-----Links for some of the things we talked about:Studio Binder: What is The Rashomon Effect in Film? - https://www.studiobinder.com/blog/what-is-the-rashomon-effect-definition/Wikipedia: The Rashomon Effect - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rashomon_effectAkira Kurosawa - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akira_Kurosawa#Criterion: The Rashomon Effect - https://www.criterion.com/current/posts/195-the-rashomon-effect?srsltid=AfmBOooDwTjvHU1kW9QGBMXE-P3u2T6x4IbX8ChJYWTtxQOOAYWOrsicTwisted - https://youtu.be/xEnLOKe6__A?si=E5EtXvs6AQ2j64eYRashomon - https://boxd.it/2a9KThe Last Duel - https://boxd.it/mQbeAmerican Psycho - https://boxd.it/28Vs12 Angry Men - https://boxd.it/2auI-----Let's build a community!Questions? Episode 28! Ricky, Piotr and Erwann have been giving each other feedback on their projects, so they talk about how to spare everyone’s feelings while giving constructive criticism. They wonder who to ask for feedback, what to really keep from the notes given, test screenings, and the insanity of rating movies with the thumbs up/thumbs down method that streaming services enjoy. Also, is "It’s boring!" good or bad feedback ? Piotr says it's good...Let us know if he’s wrong!--We'd love to hear from you!Questions? Comments? Improvements? A listener asked to hear more about editing techniques so Ricky and Piotr talk about the Kuleshov Effect or Editor’s Effect. Named after early 20th century Russian film maker and film theorist, Lev Kuleshov, the “Effect” or “Kuleshov Experiment” as it was also known as, was actually a demonstration proving the effectiveness of existing editing techniques. Ricky and Piotr talk a little about who Kuleshov was, what the "Effect" is and how filmmakers like Hitchcock, Spielberg and others adapted it in their own film making. Then give examples of the Khuleshov Effect or Editor’s Effect in recent films and TV. The theme of this week's episode is "With great power comes great responsibility" as Piotr and Ricky talking about a few of the new AI offerings from Adobe (Generative Extend and Firefly) and Flawless AI's DeepEditor. Without getting deep into describing Adobe's applications, simply put they're useful tools for filmmakers/ artists in a pinch. i,e,. giving that shot a little more tails, fixing someones eye trace, creating missing shots, etc. Where as DeepEditor is some black magic deepfake that works wonders but could be devastating in the wrong hands. Ricky points out that Adobe and Flawless have language about being ethical so much so that DeepEditor can't be utilized without consent from actors. Ricky and Piotr also talk about Piotr attending a couple editing workshops at the Warsaw Film Festival. Plus, American Cinema Editor's EditFest Global and the next season of the podcast. Apologies for Ricky's terrible audio, he had the wrong mic selected. Also, quick correction - Ricky references the movie, "Tower" in regards to DeepEditor, but what he really meant was "Fall." Apololgies. Episode 21 and Erwann is back from his vacation! He shares with Piotr and Rick how it’s been cutting a TV series for the first time. Erwann talks about how he got the job, creating the films grammar, working with a progressive shortage of coverage and other challenges, plus working with a composer for the first time. The discussion leads Piotr into mentioning the latest video from Every Frame a Painting on YouTube about sustained two-shots. There’s a little back and forth about the evolution of shot length and the way actors convey emotion. From there they get into Ricky putting up sound proofing in his new home editing suite. In episode 19, Ricky and Piotr start off by making fun of Erwann then talk about Camerimage International Film Festival in Torún, Poland. Hopefully Ricky can attend with Piotr this November. After that they give shout-outs to podcast listeners Khalid and Robert for sending in constructive feedback and thanks. If you guys are reading this description you are much appreciate. Piotr and Ricky then make fun of Erwann in the Olympics and discuss how mind-blowing post-production must be for the games. This brings up a 2005 article, that Ricky found written by Paul Hirsch, ACE reminiscing about The Droid Olympics, a competition amongst assistant edits in the late 70’s to early 80s. A fun look back at a hidden time in film history. Piotr then talks about how he used the Milanote app to break down a possible film project into individual cards on a digital board, similar to how great editors like Walter Murch will use photos and post-it notes to see a films structure. After which Piotr mentions that LOST, his favorite TV Shows is now on Netflix and Ricky talks about how great of an edit The Bear S3 Episode 2 is. In this quick episode, Piotr uses learning to ride his electric unicycle BACKWARDS as an analogy to discuss with Ricky the way we learn editing. The words intentionally, incidentally, experimentally and accidentally are thrown around, but what it boils down to is that being a good editor isn't something you learn in a book; It's something that comes with years of doing it repeatedly; finding out new things along the way by accident or experimentation. Also, in this episode we hear about Ricky's house-moving whoas, his trip to Copenhagen and watching Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation.
