Season 2 Episode 8: Jennifer Vreeland McDermott On How To Make Your Builder-Grade Home Feel Custom
50-70% of homes currently for sale in the Pitt County market are new-build homes built spec by local home builders. If those are the majority of homes available for sale, maybe it’s worth figuring out what can be done to make them feel a little less like builder-grade homes and a little more custom.
Jennifer Vreeland McDermott of JV Design Style in Charleston, SC joins Femi to talk about how to bring custom home features in through home improvement, the role of memory and story in creating a unique home, and why builder-client relationship is key when upgrading a cookie-cutter home.
It is possible to make a spec home more storied and personalized, listen to the episode to find out how.

E07: How to House-Hunt as a First-Time Homebuyer
It’s hard to be a first-time homebuyer in the current market. And if you’re a recent first-time homebuyer, what do you wish you knew before you bought?
In this episode we’re covering some of the basics (and the not-so-basics) of what you need to know to begin house-hunting as a first-time homebuyer. We’ll cover:
What to do before you start looking for a house
Where to get mortgage quotes
How to know if you can afford a house
How to choose where to live
What to look for as you tour houses,
and how to know if a house is for you
Tune in to learn everything you need to know before buying a house as a first-time homebuyer.

Have a small kitchen or tiny bathroom you’re struggling to make sense of? You’re not alone. The median size of homes across the US is just over 2,000 sq ft, which means the vast majority of us don’t live in sprawling mansions, and the vast majority of us aren’t afforded the luxury of building our own homes. So how do you maintain form and function in your dinky kitchen? How do you make your itty-bitty bathroom stylish and accommodating? And how do you maximize storage and comfort in a bedroom that’s barely big enough for a queen size bed?
These are the questions I’m answering in today’s episode as we go room-by-room through some of the most important things to think about as you design your small but mighty spaces.

What the heck is a modest makeover?
It’s pretty simple in some ways, as it does what it says on the tin, but on the other hand, there are quite a few different moving parts that go into it. It’s not hard to get overwhelmed, and there are lots of mistakes to be made, so in this episode I break the modest makeover down step-by-step so that it’s easy enough for you to do it yourself, and so you avoid some of my mistakes.

The only thing harder than finding the perfect house is finding the perfect place to build it! In this episode I interview my friend and fellow realtor Laura, who has had the joy of building her own home and shares some of the challenges of doing that.
While she might live in a custom-built house now, Laura started humbly like the rest of us, and she has never been afraid to roll up her sleeves and do the work necessary to achieve the look and feel she wants. Find out what potentially dangerous lengths she went to in order to decorate the 12-ft walls in her first house, and why her accidental oversize island turned out to be just what her kitchen needed.
