Welcome true believers! This is a podcast about Spider-Man: The Animated Series, in which two jerks (Henry and Jack) go episode-by-episode through the goofy, charming, and often insane cartoon we grew up watching – and dive into the movies and comics along the way.

"You can go to the sewers AFTER you go to the hospital" Season 4 Episode 9 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series is "The Haunting of Mary Jane Watson" trigger warning for this episode: suicide references [plot relevant!] Join Henry and Jack to the haunted caverns beneath Mary Jane's ill-advised new movie production in the 50th episode of TAS! Fresh off of inter-dimensional trauma, MJ is playing a secret agent on the big screen while Aunt Anna is presumably tied to a chair in a basement somewhere. But how does Mysterio factor into this? How will Jack connect this to David Lynch's filmography? What horrifying advice will Henry provide our dear listeners? And why does Mary Jane keep getting tricked by her ghost dad? For our comic book segment, Jack informs Henry of Mysterio's death in 90s comics, as well as some other bizarre facts about Quentin Beck's role in Spider-Man lore in the modern era... "This is the Kraven juice, it'll make you into Kraven" "We prayed for the Dark Universe to die but the monkey's paw curled and we got this instead" It's finally come... The Year of Kraven has lasted longer than 365 days and featured very little Kraven, but now we have come together to review his cinematic debut. Is it terrible? You bet. But HOW is it terrible? That's the real question. We are joined this week by Gene Aversa to talk about what went wrong with the Kraven movie and the demise of the Sony Expanded Universe. We also rank the Sonyverse movies, from 'what are they doing?' to 'what am I doing watching this?'. Additionally, we talk about some of the recent updates on the next movie that actually stars Peter Parker - Spider-Man: Brand New Day! Oh so you thought we were done with weird lore bs corner, huh? Done with obscure animal-themed villains? Not a chance. "This is much closer to Leprechaun In The Hood than I thought it was gonna be" This week Jack introduces Henry to creations that are rumoured to appear in the next Spider-Verse movie. One is the dinosaur man known as Stegron, a one-track scientific mind who is a sucker for a nap. The other is The Human Fly, JJ's most embarrassing project who only becomes more disgusting over time. We speedran this recording to make way for a much-requested and dreaded episode on a certain Sonyverse movie. See you soon. Episode notes & gorms A podcast for no one. "So undercooked I think I got salmonella from watching" Season 4 Episode 8 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series is "The Return of the Green Goblin" An iconic villain returns. Yes, that's right. Aunt Anna is back and she's enlisting help from gun-totting strangers she meets in cemeteries to take down Peter Parker once and for all. Also, the Green Goblin is here. Comic Origins: Jack gives an overview on Harry Osborn's descent into goblin madness, what adaptations have worked, and gives some story recommendations. Episode notes & gorms A podcast for no one. X-Men '97 continued the story from X-Men: The Animated Series, which is like the slightly cooler older sibling of our primary focus on this podcast. So of course we were going to talk about it when they brought it back to life. It wasn't really gone, just having an intergalactic romance with space royalty elsewhere. We, however, are a little late to the homecoming. Jack watched it as it came out, while Henry was a late bloomer catching up this year. Together, we are too disorganised to regularly release episodes. Like an X-Men team run by two Morphs. This episode we talk about every episode of the new series (some spoiler-free thoughts up top before we get into it), the fan reaction, what's in the cards for season two, and what this means for a potential comeback of Spider-Man TAS. Also... we like Gambit now??? Subscribe to our Patreon for bonus episodes! Including reviews of X-Men movies and other Marvel shows. "It's a 500 Days of Blade situation" Season 4 Episode 7 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series is "The Vampire Queen" Part two of our vampire caper means that's (hopefully) a season wrap on Morbius. But before he attempts to make it big in a cancelled pilot spin-off, he's teaming up with the gang to take down a new hypnotic vampire on the scene: Blade's mum! Some comic book origins this week: Jack gives us a little backstory for Vanessa Brooks before diving into Debra Whitman's comic counterpart: a tale of gaslighting, psychotic episodes, and a few reasons to not date Peter Parker. Extra cut convo from our recent episode for being too darn long a tangent. Finally... we can get Victor Von Doom, the romani man who used science and sorcery to become Marvel's greatest villain put to page, can be done right. OR we could cast Robert Downey Jr, because that is the safest ($80 million) bet. The big news from Marvel out of SDCC this year was that RDJ has been cast as ol' Doom. Well, we don't like it! We have plenty of reasons to be sceptical, so maybe skip this one if you don't want to hear two guys get pedantic about your favourite actor being cast. Maybe people who like this decision listen to this podcast; we don't know. Frankly, we don't want to know. It's a market we could do without. "And then Spider-Man took Scorpion to the diaper factory" Season 4 Episode 5 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series is "Partners" After a break between episodes due to some non-neogenic life events, Henry and Jack are back to talk about maybe the most outrageous episode of the show so far. We've got some spider-creepin', cyborg humilation, and the one and only Crime Boss Baby: Silvermane. As well as investigating the science of baby geniuses and armchair therapising Alisa and Alistair, we get waylaid by the true titular partners of the episode, the neogenic odd couple AKA a cohabiting Vulture and Scorpion. The trenchcoat economy is back in business, baby. Alongside a cavalcade of returning plot threads from early seasons, we delve into some of the voices behind the cartoon and briefly flashback to some Silvermane comic stories that do not involve talking babies. This episode Jack is joined by Diego Crespo + Gene Aversa from The Waffle Press to talk about our favourite comic book adaptations and ask the big questions: what makes a good comic adaptation? How faithful should they be to the source material? Can we survive this conversation without talking about the current Spider-Man comics? (the answer is no). Oh boy. Did you know that Kraven the Hunter had children? Did you know there are close to 100 KRAVEN CHILDREN? Did you know one of them is a kaiju from outer space?? Well, don't worry, there's plenty more to learn from this absurd family history. #TheYearOfKraven Note: this episode was recorded before it was announced that the Kraven the Hunter movie has been delayed until 2024. Calypso, loving(?) partner to Kraven the Hunter, has a short but wild ride through Marvel Comics history. From her bongo-playing origins in the early 80s to her confusing and unfortunate demise in the 90s, there's a lot to talk about with this voodoo witch – including but not limited to: a brief history on Marvel going bankrupt, the coming of the edgelord Arachknight, stepson hijinks, devil doppelgangers, and a few more reasons why Henry will never read a comic book. I wonder why half of these issues aren't on Marvel Unlimited? #TheYearOfKraven If you want to check out the images we're talking about, Jack put together all the comic panels for you to check out on the blog here. Issues referenced: Amazing Spider-Man #209 (1980), Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #65 (1982), Spider-Man #1-5 (1990), Daredevil (1964) #310-11 (1992), Daredevil Annual #9 (1993), Web of Spider-Man #109-10 (1994), Spider-Man '97 #1 (1997), Spectacular Spider-Man #249-253 Quotes from: Dave Wallace's review of The Complete Todd McFarlane Spider-Man, Comics Bulletin; 2007 interview between Danny Fingeroth and Todd McFarlane, Write Now #16. Season 4 Episode 4 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series is "The Return of Kraven" The third entry in the loose trilogy of Kraven appearances is here to be side-tracked by conversations about racism and Bananaman. But back to the episode, we've got a mysterious creature on the loose and a hunt through the jungles of New York to find it. What is this, season 1? Kraven has returned, again, somehow. No comic backstory this time and to Jack's surprise no voodoo either. But don't worry, that just means we've got one in the chamber for Weird Lore BS Corner… once we silence those darn bongos… Episode notes & gorms A podcast for no one. Season 4 Episode 3 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series brings us to "The Black Cat" Henry forgot his microphone, Jack tries not to die, and the Kingpin has yet another OnlyFISK venture – this time with more cat outfits. As if this episode couldn't get more inappropriate, Peter gets an STI from a rooftop encounter with a strange woman who may just be benefiting from the proportional sexiness of a Steve Rogers, perfects the mid-air spoon, then tries out some stripper clothes. SHIELD, bless them, are doing their best. In our comic origins segment we talk about Felicia Hardy's first appearance in 1979's The Amazing Spider-Man #194/195, which is both spectacularly goofy, relentlessly horny, and monumentally depressing. Season 4 Episode 2 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series is the first of a two-parter: "The Cat" After some tangents into Jack's dreams and Henry's masochistic movie-watching, we dive into a tale of WW2 spies, Sam Eliot lookalikes and a new addition to the OnlyFISK lineup. Yes, it's a sequel. Also, Doc Ock is here. Maybe he'll be less embarrassed if we pretend we didn't see him. Moving on from Nick Fury's ramshackle operation, we briefly talk about The Cat's origins in the comics as well as his mentor, Black Fox. Oh, and there's an update on Mud-Thing! Season 4 of Spider-Man: The Animated Series begins with "Guilty" Subscribe to our Patreon! Robbie Robertson, the reigning dad of last season, is drawing a glock again – but this time it's a lazer gun, and he has no idea how it ended up in his hands. But there's a man that would risk his neck for his brother man, who won't cop out when there's danger all about: Jigsaw Jameson. JJ dons the original trench coat and fedora, suiting up into his alt costume as the hero this city deserves. After all, this is a town with gaslighting cabbies, the irredeemable Baby Joe's, and a place where Robbie Robertson of all people is considered a lucky man. For our comics segment we talk about the Spectacular J. Jonah Jameson noir story from 1983, then jump into Joe "Robbie" Robertson's origins as a Lee-Romita creation, while Jack figures out just how many times he's quit the Bugle, been fired from the Bugle, and how many times he's fired our down-on-his-luck photographer. All of the reasons are insane. Episode notes & gorms A podcast for no one. If we get anything wrong, a wizard did it. We're releasing this from behind the veil of our Patreon feed to let y'all regular feed listeners in on one of our Blade retrospectives… but not one you probably know about. As the credits rolled on the cinematic garbage fire that was Blade: Trinity, we all looked around at ourselves and thought to ourselves: "Well, at least we'll never get an on-screen Blade as bad as this." To most of us, this thought was a relief, but to screenwriter David S. Goyer, it was merely a challenge. If this is the first time you're hearing of Blade: The Series, there's definitely a reason for that. Blade: The Series is David S. Goyer's rock bottom, and considering he wrote the screenplays for Batman v Superman and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, this is no mean feat. In fact, Blade: The Series is rock bottom for everyone involved. Even Kirk "Sticky Fingaz" Jones, whose job replacing Wesley Snipes as Blade is somehow both the pinnacle and nadir of his short and storied acting career. On the latest addition to our Patreon feed, Jack and Henry groan, sigh and complain their way through Blade: The Series, where middle-aged vampire moms terrorise the public and we see how the transition to the small screen made Blade a far less effective fighter (unless, of course, he's up against a pregnant woman). Welcome to another addition of Weird Lore BS Corner, in which we ask the question: Who is the Hobgoblin? And yes, we know you can just google that answer, but the mystery isn't about the resolution, it's about the mind-breaking confusion we suffer along the way… This episode has everything: red herrings, toupée shenanigans, groin pulls, group blackmail, robots, evil twins, clones, demons and cyborgs! Also, there's a medieval-looking dude who rides a stolen goblin glider who may or may not be the real deal or a brainwashed sap during any one comic panel. Tune in to descend into madness with two jerks locked in a basement somewhere. Jack put together all the comic panels and references for you to check out on the blog here. Give it a glance so he feels less insane for doing it! Also, there's a special bonus weird lore on the behind-the-scenes nonsense from the Marvel offices that allowed some of this to occur – you can find that over on our Patreon. A podcast for no one.
