Description
Time Signatures, hosted by Jim Ervin, features conversations with musicians, industry professionals, and others connected to the blues genre. Primarily focused on the blues, the program occasionally delves into other linked genres (ie. jazz, rock, soul, funk). Many of the episodes are recorded before a live audience at various venues in and around Mid-Michigan. The program is presented by the Lansing's Capital Area Blues Society, a non-profit blues organization dedicated to the promotion of, preservation of, and education about the blues. This is also the main goal of Time Signatures; acting as a digital time capsule, capturing moments in time, and providing a platform for future generations to hear the voices of those who have etched their own “signature” into the blues.

The late 60's developed some of the biggest names of the Blues in Chicago. Along with Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy, James Cotton and others, there was a group of young white guys that learned from these future legends, and they began making a name for themselves along the way. Corky Siegel and Jim Schwall began their musical partnership simply as, "Corky and Jim". For all the details on the rest of the story, please join host Jim Ervin as he welcomes Corky Siegel for an in depth discussion about those early days in Chicago. Siegel was also responsible for developing a sub-genre known as Chamber Blues in the late 60's as well. Iconic Rock (and Blues) Photographer, Robert M. Knight joins host Jim Ervin as he welcomes Knight to talk about his early photographic work with the likes of Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, and the Yardbirds. Knight's obsession with photography led him to London at age 16, and the rest is history. He has photographed thousands of musicians in his more than half century in the business, he is a published author, he is the subject of the documentary, 'Rock Prophecies', but perhaps his biggest distinction is being the sole photographer at the Alpine Valley Music Festival on August 26, 1990 in Troy, Wisconsin. Just two more episodes remain of Season 5, and what an incredible guest, indeed! This young lady is perhaps the most prolific violinist in the Blues genre today, but she sure doesn't limit herself to the Blues. Anne Harris joins host Jim Ervin to discuss her life in music, a recently completed tour with Taj Mahal and Keb Mo, and her privately crowdfunded NEW violin project, with African American female luthier, Amanda Ewing. Most notably, this is the first time two African American ladies have done business on this level....one being a luthier and one a violinist. It's a very cool story. And speaking of cool stories, if you have never seen her do one of her signature deep back bends while playing on stage, it's a sight to behold! There is much more to this episode, so enjoy and be sure to click that subscribe button if you have not done so already. Annika Chambers and Paul DesLauriers were musicians in their own right, each with their own bands until fate took over in 2018. As season five winds to a close, join us for a great discussion with this power couple, about their fateful meeting, the quietly planned proposal under the St. Louis arch, and their subsequent elopement. This week on Time Signatures, join host Jim Ervin as he welcomes ‘The Fallbrook Kid’, Anthony Cullins to the program. At the tender age of 10, Cullins did odd jobs around the house and neighborhood, saving up for a trip to Costco to purchase his first guitar. With the love and support of his parents, Anthony discovered he had a knack for the instrument, and he was gigging locally beginning at the age of 12. In the years that followed, he has found a way to make a decent income playing, and he has met some amazing musicians who have encouraged and supported him, and he has opened for Walter Trout, Los Lobos, and George Clinton, and he has played with Chris Cain and Earl Thomas. Oh, and wait til you hear about his trip to Norway for Notodden, where he and Earl played with Deep Purple! Just a few more episodes remain before Season five comes to a close. That is precisely what happened to Anson Funderburgh, and you will hear all about his early musical experiences, the formation of his band, ‘The Rockets’, and his work with Sam Myers on this week’s edition of Time Signatures with Jim Ervin. In the 80’s, 90’s and 00’s, the Greater Lansing area was abuzz with a ton of Blues music. In addition to the incredible local talent on hand, a small handful of people were responsible for doing a great deal of work, attracting out of town Blues musicians to play. Harry Oman traveled to the metro Detroit area, formed some partnerships, and brought some of the biggest names in Detroit’s Blues scene to play at LeRoy’s in Lansing’s south end. A chance meeting with Eddie Kirkland led to a long lasting relationship that lasted until Kirkland’s death in 2011. If you like great Blues history, complete with solid gold stories, this episode is a can’t miss. Huge thanks to Harry for taking time to help us preserve these stories, too!_________________________Facebook: Time SignaturesYouTube: Time SignaturesFacebook: Capital Area Blues SocietyWebsite: Capital Area Blues SocietyFriends of Time Signatures _______Website: University of Mississippi Libraries Blues ArchiveWebsite: Killer Blues Headstone ProjectWebsite: Blues Society Radio NetworkWebsite: Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation
