Description
Immersive personal stories and conversations about women's health.
Overlooked is an award-winning women’s health podcast, hosted by journalist Golda Arthur.
In this podcast, we ask, what has been most overlooked, and where is the inequality felt more deeply?
The mission of Overlooked is to empower women by helping them advocate better for themselves, and we do this by featuring immersive personal storytelling, and in-depth conversations about women’s health.
Overlooked began as a series about ovarian cancer, told through the story of Golda's mother, Teresa. After that first season, the show broadened its focus to look at other topics and stories about women's health, including menopause, endometriosis, motherhood, and survivorship.

This is a listener-requested episode about the connection between migraine and hormones - and one hormone in particular. You guessed it: estrogen. Dr Rashmi B. Halker Singh from The Mayo Clinic talks about migraine at puberty, pregnancy and perimenopause, and how the menstrual cycle can worsen migraine, which is considered a chronic condition. She outlines the symptoms, an approach to treatment, and explains how a migraine actually unfolds.Earlier this year we did an episode with Sally Herships about the experience of living with constant migraine - take a listen to that episode here. The newsletter has more resources on migraine and the backstory to this episode - subscribe to it here.

Two-thirds of people with Alzheimer's are women, but we don't really know why. Dr. Gillian Einstein, who studies women’s brain health at the University of Toronto, is uncovering how life experiences like surgical menopause and caregiving stress in the 30s and 40s might plant the seeds of this disease decades before symptoms appear. For the backstory to this episode and a deeper dive on Alzheimers in women, subscribe to the newsletter.Gillian Einstein is The Wilfred and Joyce Posluns Chair in Women’s Brain Health and Aging, Professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto. What to listen to next: Surviving an almost fatal brain aneurysm, with Alicia Trujillo.

This episode steps back in time, to the origins of the fight for birth control. It wasn't led by one woman - it was shaped by a fierce rivalry between two: Margaret Sanger, who founded Planned Parenthood, and an overlooked figure from history, Mary Ware Dennett, who was the first person to ever take reproductive rights to Washington. Their different visions for birth control - and their bitter personal conflict - created the movement we know today. Author Stephanie Gorton reveals how this hidden history still matters, 100 years later. The episode is based on 'The Icon and the Idealist, Margaret Sanger, Mary Ware Dennett, and the Rivalry That Brought Birth Control to America'More on Stephanie Gorton's work here. Golda hits the streets of Manhattan for an unscientific sampling to answer this question, then talks with Sanj Singh, CEO of Temple Therapeutics, about his mission to turn uncomfortable silence into curiosity, then advocacy from his fellow men. This episode explores how to turn men into not just supporters of the women they love, but advocates for systemic change. Because moving the needle on women's health can't be done by women alone.Share your story about men's role in women's health with us by emailing us or sending in a voice note. hello@overlookedpod.comLearn more about Sanj and his work here. Also mentioned in this episode:-Sign up for First Person Health, a storytelling workshop here.-Sign up for the Recalculating newsletter here. What to listen to next: Where do we get our heath information (and misinformation) from? with Dr Brandi Sinkfield

Even a basic definition of endometriosis tells us a lot about why we need to rethink how we’re dealing with this condition. Rowan Gardner is co-founder of Precision Life, where she's using genetics to revolutionize how we understand endometriosis - breaking it into subtypes instead of treating it as one disease. We know that with endometriosis, the stakes are high, and the challenges are enormous - but so is the opportunity, says Rowan, who is finding new ways to look at patients and their data. Morgan Stanton's frustration with unanswered questions about her fibroids led her to start a company that's collecting menstrual blood to build better models of women's reproductive health. As CEO of Opal Therapeutics, she's creating "organoids" - miniature uteruses grown from menstrual blood - to help understand conditions like fibroids and endometriosis that affect millions of women but have been largely ignored by research.Links:Opal Therapeutics: https://www.opaltherapeutics.com/What to listen to next - 'Mapping the ovaries', with Kathleen E O'Neill

Genetic testing is a powerful preventive tool for ovarian cancer, especially since there's no way to screen for this disease like we can with breast or cervical cancer. Golda's journey into prevention started with the results of a genetic test, which showed a gene mutation called RAD51C. But with that knowledge comes difficult decisions. She tells that story. And, Jason Rosenthal tells the story of his wife, Amy Krouse Rosenthal, and the work of the AKR Foundation. Overlooked is a recipient of the AKR Foundation's Innovator Award, which made this series possible. Learn more here: https://www.amykrouserosenthalfoundation.org/Want more episodes on ovarian cancer? What does it mean to survive a diagnosis, and live with cancer? For this episode, we return to the subject that launched the very first season of Overlooked: ovarian cancer, with Teresa Arthur - aka Golda’s Mom. Teresa was diagnosed in 2018 and has been living with recurring ovarian cancer for the last seven years, spending almost half of every year in chemotherapy treatment. She talks candidly with Golda about her health challenges and quality of life in survivorship. Take a listen to Teresa’s story with ovarian cancer, which we told in our very first season here: https://overlooked.simplecast.com/episodes/fluid-puppy

Modern IUDs - intrauterine devices - are a safe form of contraception for most women. But this wasn’t always the case. Author Chikako Takeshita traces the history and development of these devices, originally created for population control in 1960s, and talks about one IUD in particular, the Dalkon Shield, which would cause widespread harm to the women who used it, and in some cases, had lethal consequences.Click the 'Follow' button for more women's health stories. The Global Biopolitics of the IUD: https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262547840/the-global-biopolitics-of-the-iud/Chikako Takeshita: Associate Professor at the University of California Riverside - https://profiles.ucr.edu/app/home/profile/chikakotMore information about IUDs: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/treatments/24441-intrauterine-device-iudListen to this next:HPV screening https://overlooked.simplecast.com/episodes/screening-yourself-for-cervical-cancer-could-be-a-game-changer-with-dr-anita-lim

What an incredible initiative! The Overlooked podcast is shining a much-needed light on crucial topics in women’s health that are often ignored. I’ve personally felt the impact of inequality in healthcare, especially when advocating for myself. It’s like navigating the game of Slither io—sometimes you need to make strategic moves to ensure your health gets the attention it deserves. https://slitherio.onl
This is a critical discussion! Women's health often gets sidelined, and we need to prioritize it. Investing in preventative care and research is crucial. While advocating, I sometimes need a quick mental break. Anyone else de-stress with a round of https://slopeunblockedd.org to refocus?
