So, to inspire you, and make you feel more confident in starting or continuing with your jiu jitsu journey, I will be chatting with those personalities and brands we may have heard of before, but don't really know what goes on before they get to the mats!
It takes someone like you to even think about starting in this sport, so come and follow my personal journey to success!

E122: Yeliz Akwei - Blue Belt Yeliz Akwei collaborated with her husband for holding her Muay Thai pads in exchange for starting Jiu Jitsu. After a confusing start in the sport, her interest was sparked by the Omoplata as it felt fun and intriguing. Continuing to do the hard thing that is learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is something parents do, and Yeliz is one of those people. Balancing the personal priority of parental wellbeing and prioritising the children is something many of us consider. Yeliz role models the behaviour of choosing to do hard things, showing up at regular training and the occasional competition for her children and also inspires other women around her to start and continue in the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Zoë Swift is a White Belt training out of Parity Martial Arts and so far has lost every match to submission. She shows up with resilience and tenacity to keep going on her competitive journey despite the initial setbacks. Zoë really is a role model for any of us in the early part of our BJJ careers. She also shares challenges in decision making for her study and work life. Training has given Zoë balance for her life now she has embarked on an HR Apprenticeship. She is inspired by her partner, his challenges and growth in MMA and BJJ. Supporting other women is really important, whether they are friends that haven't yet started training or fellow training partners. Ellie Osborne began training in martial arts as a teenager and is now a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Purple Belt and women’s coach at Ascend Jiu Jitsu. Now in her 40s, Ellie still brings the same rebellious spirit to her training — channeling it through sport, challenge, and the BJJ community she loves. In this episode, we talk openly about what it’s like to train as women in our forties, including the physical and emotional challenges that can come with perimenopause. Ellie shares her honest journey through Jiu Jitsu, the importance of having a supportive husband and team around her, and why she continues to seek out difficult goals — from the mats to marathon running. Libby Genge faces the biggest match of her BJJ career against Sarah Galvo on Polaris 36 at Fairfield Halls Croydon on Saturday 7th March 2026. Having met Libby for KAIROS 3 she truly is already a winner, having walked away from that tournament with £2k back in 2025. Libby started her hobby life in dancing and quickly progressed to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with pink and purple Gi's. Libby shares her personal journey starting out in jiu jitsu, challenges in the sport, the division between girls and boys, children and adults, and how to manage training with family members. Libby is now a full-time athlete and is looking to win many Grand Slams in 2026 and beyond. Leo Coates is a four-stripe Blue Belt and started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu back in 2021, and comes from a Rugby background. Leo previously trained Judo as a child and that was his only introduction to martial arts. Due to injury Leo moved from his 20 years in Rugby to Jiu Jitsu, and wishes he started competing at White Belt. Leo has a whole career based in the coffee industry and decided in 2025 to combine his love of Jiu Jitsu with his coffee experience, and now through sales gives back to the BJJ community supporting young people starting out and competing. Inviting families that haven't yet embarked on their Jiu Jitsu journey and serving Clinch Coffee to the adults whilst the kids, and even the parents train is something any BJJ club could try, especially to continue to build the positive community. Graham Barlow is a Black Belt and co-author of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu - The Ultimate Illustrated Guidebook with Seymour Yang. Graham talks about the collaboration for the beautiful illustrated book specifically aimed at White Belts in the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, however we all love our copies, regardless of rank. Josh Mensah is a Brown Belt and founder of The Grapple League. Supported by an incredible team they host events with a similar format to Grappling Industries with Round Robins. Rich Harding is a Purple Belt fighting out of Parity Martial Arts in Southampton, and is up on Coastal Combat Festival on Saturday 7th February in Dorchester Prison. Rich is a long-time martial artist, and a 20 year MMA coach. He is also a multi-title holding martial artist in K1, Thai Boxing and Unlicensed Boxing. Rich is a left-handed striker, has an exciting style and talks of his successes and the benefits of being left-handed in martial arts. He has some great tips for all of us that feel like we know very little at Blue Belt, and shares a mindful approach to striking. Leigh Ibberson has recently been promoted to Purple Belt and his BJJ career is looking at a very exciting over the coming year. Leigh is the owner and founder of Shaftesbury Submission Grappling based in a small town in Dorset, UK. Leigh was inspired by the Joe Rogan Experience to start training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu some years ago, and continues to listen to great podcasts, including the Jiu Jitsu Lou Podcast. Facing the fear and doing it anyway is a life philosophy of Leigh's. This includes climbing Snowdon, in bare foot shoes with a 50kg backpack. Emily Eyles joins the show for a second time after her first appearance in November 2023. She is now a Black Belt, recently promoted under Pedro Bessa. Emily has always been an avid traveler and competes all over the world. Hayley Curtis is a newly promoted Brown Belt, with 25 years sports coaching experience, is based in the Isle of Man and is an accomplished coach at Summit Grappling Academy (SGA). She talks about all aspects of BJJ, including some fun antics! Making the sport of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu more accessible to everyone is the aim of many of us, especially Hayley and the rest of the team at SGA. Mike Clark has recently been promoted to Brown Belt, and we talk about the recent British Open tournament in Coventry, and some of the aches and pains that us as Masters competitors might experience! 'Jiu Jitsu saved my life' is a statement that relates to Mike's story. He shares parts of his story that echo the true value of being part of a community, especially one that is the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu community. The vibe of any Jiu Jitsu academy is founded within the heartfelt energy of the Head Coach, and therefore attract similar, like-minded people. Hayley Valentine is a new Black Belt and has just had her 29th Birthday. Wishing you all a Happy Festive period, with some downtime, and at least one Open Mat! Hayley opens up about what life was like before Jiu Jitsu and shares coming from a family of remarkable humans. She was thrilled to find such a different world on the mats, and just wanted to get fit. Giving your all, is something that is close to Hayley's heart, and it's very clear that her passion is to put her whole self into everything she does. John Morgan is a Brown Belt at Newbury BJJ having started back in 2018, and recently hosted a 24 hour Rollathon raising money for REORG. We talk about what Jiu Jitsu actually is, and why it's such a great thing to start doing, for positive mental health as well as weight loss. If you want to feel welcomed into a new community, start training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. John shares how as he progressed through the belts he noticed he was using less effort, and became comfortable, coasting through training. His coach gave him some feedback to go and get tougher rounds, but what is most impressive is that John had the self-awareness to continue to improve his knowledge and experience in Jiu Jitsu. If you're interested in joining a Jiu Jitsu camp, John has some helpful advice for us White and Blue Belts that might be thinking of booking a week or weekend camp for 2026. Julie Catchpole AKA Jiu Jitsu Nanny is an all-round competitor in all aspects of life, including Monopoly! Julie was promoted to Purple Belt at the recent World Masters. She talks of her competition experience over the last few years competing as a Masters Athlete after she started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at 57. Julie trains at The Jiu Jitsu Sanctuary in Chelmsford, Essex and always wants to be working towards her own progress in Jiu Jitsu. Balancing training with family responsibilities, is ultimately important for wellbeing and positive mindset, especially when dealing with bereavement, as well as other life challenges. Moogie Hayat is a Jiu Jitsu Referee, and an active competitor, and he talks about his recent Super Fight on Quatrolinhas 2. Moogie's curiosity in knowing and learning more about the sport has kept him and his family in the sport for so long. The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu community is much richer because of Moogie, do go and say hello when you see him at your next event. Moogie is very much focused on supporting his family and anyone in the wider community.
