Not everyone watches TV and some people prefer to watch videos on their computers or phones. Mountain bike tires can be expensive, and it's important to choose the right tire for different terrains. Gravel racing is a popular cycling discipline, and races like BWR North Carolina offer exciting challenges. Riding long distances can improve endurance and fitness levels. Speed is a topic of interest for some cyclists, and achieving faster speeds can be a goal for training. Knowing the gravel conditions is important for gravel races like Unbound Heat acclimation can be beneficial for performance in hot weather races Tadej Pogacar's performance in the Giro d'Italia is impressive The Troca gravel race had confusion around the different distances Participating in the Troca 360 race may impact recovery and preparation for the Unbound gravel race. Race organizers should clarify the competitive distance and prize money to avoid confusion. The Bolt Shave razor is heavy but durable, making it easier to use. The effectiveness of CBD products is inconclusive and varies from person to person. Dylan's bike fit philosophy is to ride without fuss and not worry about the details. Saddle fore-aft position is important for proper bike fit, with the knee ideally positioned over or slightly in front of the pedal spindle. Having a backup bike for racing can be beneficial in case of mechanical issues, but it may not be necessary for mountain biking. The hosts express their opinions on cyclocross, discussing the requirement of having two bikes and suggesting alternative rules. They brainstorm YouTube challenges, such as riding a century without a saddle or running a marathon in unconventional shoes. The hosts joke about sponsored ads and share humorous anecdotes. "And then you can press a button and it'll give you a DJ-ism" "So who else besides Pete Stetona did the 360?" "No, that people did the 360." "Yeah, I feel like the race promoters need to put up a pretty significant amount of prize money for one, one of the three distances, not multiple." "Most people use the acronym 'COPS' for saddle fore-aft position: knee over pedal spindle." "That's what the long dong stem is for." "I recently got into waxing my chain with the Silco Croc-Potinator 4000 and I absolutely love the process." "Dude, you should do it on one of those city bikes." "No, no dude it took them like 20 hours to finish it. They had blisters and stuff." "No, a 53 really sucks. A 69 is at least in the... A 53? Episode 97 - The Matt Beers Takedown at BWR Cali, DJ is the Modern Day Nostradamus of the Bike Industry, and Will Keegan Swenson Ever Get Tired of Winning?  What up party people. Got the full crew in the studio this week and we’re talking BWR Cali and the savage solo effort from Matt Beers to take the dub. Scott breaks down his racing from Tour of the Gila, in typical Scott fashion. We riff about DJ predicting the demise of Stages Cycling on the last episode and all the responses we got when that came to fruition. And will Keegan Swenson ever get tired of beating up on all the domestic talent, I mean c’mon it’s got to get old at some point right?  Oh yeah, thanks for all the inquiries we got about the podcast production position after last weeks episode, it’s cool to have so many loyal fans interested in helping the boys bring the best product possible to y’all. Episode 96 - The Redemption Episode ft. Sea Otter Recap, Tire Talk, and More What up party people. Let’s just address the giant elephant in the room from the jump. Last weeks audio straight up sucked. I know it, you know it, and apparently every beer binging, cat loving internet troll also knows it too. Look, I did the best I could to try and salvage the entire episode while working with corrupted files but lesson learned, now I know to just scrap it rather than put out a dumpster fire episode like that again. Anyways, I had more time to work with yet another set of jank ass files this week so I’m coining this the redemption episode because after days of editing I was able to revive the final cut back to our usual standards (which fortunately that bar is already pretty low). We are actively seeking a replacement for myself so I can better spend my time and alleviate myself from all the hate mail and death threats from y’all hooligans (okay luckily there weren’t any actual death threats but damn it sure felt like it at times). SO if you’re listening and you think you have the skills to be a top notch producer and want to throw your application in the hat, you’ve got until end of day Sunday to drop us a note. We’re looking to hire someone stat. Let’s see, what else. Oh yeah, the episode. We’ve got Sea Otter recap, tire talk, and more coming right up. If you have any questions or feedback for the show you can drop us a note at bonkbrospodcast@gmail.com or you can holla at ya boys on the Bonk Bros insta (@bonkbros @dylanjawnson @adamsaban6 @tylerclouti @raddaddizzle @scottmcgilljr). The conversation ends with a discussion about the challenges of managing listener feedback and the time-consuming nature of responding to emails. In this final part of the conversation, the hosts discuss the issue of receiving feedback and criticism from listeners. Platforms like Athlinks often have unreliable and incomplete race results, leading to confusion and dissatisfaction. VO2 max testing can have a significant impact on an athlete's perception of their talent and potential. The Seattle Classic race had some surprising results, with athletes like Chase Warke and Samara Shepard performing well. The Seattle Classic event combines both racing and a trade show, highlighting the dual nature of the event. Tire choice is an important consideration for gravel racing, with different riders opting for different tread patterns and tire pressures. The hosts question the low prize money in the Lifetime Grand Prix series compared to the revenue generated by the event. They discuss the potential of offering a larger prize purse to attract top-level riders to events like Unbound. The conversation highlights the challenges of managing listener feedback and the time-consuming nature of responding to emails. The hosts express frustration with negative comments about audio quality and emphasize the difficulty of producing a perfect podcast. Consider the value of feedback and criticism before taking it to heart Improving audio quality is important, but not all feedback is constructive When you forget your cycling shoes on a remote ride, consider waiting in the car, riding in road shoes, or riding in Crocs and socks When flying with your bike, invest in a good bike bag or case and pack it properly to protect your bike   Titles Analyzing Results and Performance in a Recent Race Dealing with Audio Quality and Technical Difficulties Tire Choices for Gravel Racing The Impact of VO2 Max Testing on Athletes The Discrepancy in Prize Money: Lifetime Grand Prix Attracting Top-Level Riders: The Power of a Large Prize Purse Tips for Flying with Your Bike Navigating Feedback and Criticism   Sound Bites "That has nothing to do with how we start the episode." Episode 95 - Sea Otter Classic Preview and Such LISTEN AT YOUR OWN RISK. What up party people. The recording was a little disjointed with half the crew traveling to Sea Otter and I was scrambling to make it home from a whirlwind of a few days of engineering work up in Minneapolis so excuse any interruptions as a result. As a result, it seems the tracks somehow got corrupted and made for a nightmare of an editing session. So yeah, we’re talking Sea Otter and such. The conversation then shifts to the topic of rider safety at races and the differences between mountain bike and gravel races. They discuss the treacherous nature of some courses and the need for event organizers to prioritize safety. The hosts also touch on the topic of bike sponsorship and the decision to ride a mountain bike or a gravel bike for certain races. The conversation concludes with plans for future races and the logistics of attending them.   Takeaways Recording logistics can be challenging, especially when multiple hosts are in different locations. Different cooling mechanisms in cycling, such as ice socks and dumping water, have different effects on core temperature. The NCL and Denver Disruptors are discussed, highlighting the participation of the team in other races. The Live Golf league is mentioned as a unique and controversial approach to golf. American riders had a successful weekend in cross-country mountain biking, with multiple podium finishes. The use of bad words in the podcast is acknowledged, and the hosts joke about the impact on listeners, including children. The concept of loft and its opposite are briefly mentioned. The NCL drama highlights the challenges faced by new cycling leagues and the difficulties in sustaining them. Dumping water on oneself during hot races can provide a significant boost in power output. The use of water cooling in races may have limitations and can potentially affect the body's natural cooling mechanisms. The conversation showcases the camaraderie and banter between the hosts, making for an entertaining and engaging discussion. The hosts also touch on the rules and attire associated with golf, providing a lighthearted and humorous end to the conversation. Scott had a successful charity ride and dominated the Redlands race. The Legion team's performance has declined compared to previous seasons. The Amstel Gold race was challenging and had a low finish rate due to the cold weather. Predicting race outcomes can be challenging, especially when considering different types of riders and courses. Fantasy leagues can add excitement and engagement to sports events, but it's important to set boundaries and not bet real money. Personal experiences and preferences can influence race predictions and choices. The Sea Otter Classic is a popular bike race event that attracts both roadies and mountain bikers. Reconnaissance of the race course is important to familiarize oneself with the start and potential bottlenecks. Rider safety should be a priority for event organizers, especially in races with treacherous terrain. The hosts also introduce Bonk Bros as a sponsor and discuss the advantages of using 650B gravel tires. The conversation concludes with a discussion about peeing in bibs during races. In this conversation, the hosts discuss various topics related to cycling, including peeing during a race, dream bikes, power output and performance, and fueling during long races.   Takeaways   Mic troubles and lack of preparedness can affect the start of a podcast. Hard training camps can be challenging but can also provide valuable experiences. Comfortable mattresses are important for a good night's sleep at training camps. Pacing strategies are crucial in 24-hour races. Lapped races can offer unique challenges and opportunities for riders. Team events can provide camaraderie and a different racing experience. Choosing the right teammate is crucial in team-based races like the Lifetime Grand Prix. Tire choice is a personal preference, with some riders preferring narrower tires for perceived speed and others opting for wider tires for increased traction and comfort. Testing tire performance can be subjective, and different testing methods may yield different results. Flat tires can be a significant challenge in gravel races, and riders employ various strategies to minimize the risk. Understanding the course details and decisive sections of a race can help riders plan their strategies and tire choices. Consider the timing and scheduling of events to avoid conflicts with other races. Ear flap helmets may provide aerodynamic advantages and reduce wind noise. Riding into a headwind can feel worse than climbing due to expectations and lack of reward. Chain waxing can provide a smooth and clean drivetrain, but proper application is important. Bonk Bros offers a range of products for cyclists, including chain waxing systems. The choice between 650B and 700C gravel tires depends on the specific race and conditions. Peeing in bibs during races can be a time-saving strategy, especially in cold and wet conditions. Peeing during a race can be a necessary strategy to stay warm and maintain performance. Dream bikes vary for each individual, and sponsorship can limit the options available. Power output and performance are key factors in cycling, and different riders have different strengths. Fueling properly during long races is crucial for maintaining energy levels and performance.   Chapters   00:00 Introduction and Mic Troubles 01:22 Discussion about Hard Training Camps 03:52 Complaints about Mattresses at Camp 04:56 Preparations for the Mid-South Race 09:57 Review of the 24 Hours of Old Pueblo Race 14:19 Pacing Strategies in 24-Hour Races 18:00 Discussion about Lapped Races 19:21 Other 24-Hour Races and Team Events 23:58 Debate about Team vs Solo Racing 25:24 Discussion about the Lifetime Grand Prix and choosing teammates 28:44 Conversation about the new Challenge tire 30:48 Debate on tire width preferences 35:09 Debate on tire testing methods 39:14 Discussion about the BWR Arizona race 42:21 Review of the BWR Arizona course 45:13 Debate on flat tires and tire choices 48:12 Discussion about the course details of BWR Arizona 49:41 Discussion about hosting events and ear flap helmets 52:00 Why riding into a headwind feels worse than riding up a climb 54:41 Conversation about chain waxing and the Silca Crockpotinator 4000 57:00 Discussion about the benefits of using a wax chain 01:01:15 Introduction of Bonk Bros as a sponsor 01:08:31 Conversation about using other lubes and sponsors 01:09:34 Comparison between 650B and 700C gravel tires 01:12:42 Discussion about peeing in bibs during races 01:14:14 Peeing during a race 01:16:00 Dream bikes 01:19:00 Power output and performance 01:22:00 Fueling during long races 01:23:05 Conclusion
Episode 86 - Gear Talk, Tales of the Trade, SSCXWC, and What’s In Store for 2024 w/ Tobin Ortenblad What is up party people. We’ve got another banger episode for y’all with our first guest appearance of the 2024 season. Tobin Ortenblad joined us and his witty, sometimes nerdy, and just plain down-to-earth personality fit right in with the crew for what turned into one of the more fun recordings we’ve had in a while. We get some intel into what it’s like to be the PIC for one of the best in the biz right now, get into the weeds on some gear head talk, share some stories from within the races, and even get into some conversation on rider safety, especially in the world of gravel racing.    Speaking of rider safety, I want to take a moment to send some get well wishes to fellow cyclist, coach, podcaster, and family man, Derek Teel aka @DialedHealth, who was victim of a hit and run accident two weeks ago while riding his bike which left him in a pretty bad way. Thank God he survived but he’s got a long road to recovery ahead. So we wish you well Derek and to everyone else stay safe on those bicycles because it’s the Wild Wild West out there on the streets these days. I wish I could say these types of accidents are becoming less frequent as more riders turn to dirt, however, it just doesn’t seem to be the case.    Hit us up with any feedback or questions for the show at bonkbrospodcast@gmail.com or find the show page on Instagram and follow us there (@bonkbros @dylanjawnson @adamsaban6 @tylerclouti @raddaddizzle @scottmcgilljr). What up party people. Shout to one of our listeners for sending in the clip from Family Guy that inspired the party people tag line - it took over a year for someone to finally bridge the connection. I don’t even like Family Guy but that was one of the one-liners I remember and it’s always stuck. So who knows, now that I’m outed, might have to come up with some other way of addressing y’all at the stop or maybe we’ll just stick with it. Anyways, with another slow week in the bike racing world we brought some discussion topics to the table again before diving into some fun listener questions. We’ve got a huge backlog of submissions so if you’ve sent in a burning question that you really want an answer to asap for timing relevancy, make sure to note this early in your question so we can try to get to it on time.    That said, hit us up with any feedback or questions for the show at bonkbrospodcast@gmail.com or scroll over to the Bonk Bros Instagram page and smash that follow button (@bonkbros @dylanjawnson @adamsaban6 @tylerclouti @raddaddizzle @scottmcgilljr). What up party people. Happy fricken New Year. How in the world we’re entering our third year of podcast I have no idea but until this things blows up in or face or we finally just get too sick of each other, we’re going to keep this thing rolling. We decided it was about time we add just a liiiitle bit of structure to the madness and each came with a burning topic we wanted to throw on the table for discussion.
