Cliff-climbing is treacherous for some, despite the aid of a well-anchored rope. Those bruised and battered stand watch while the more stealthy enter the caves, which prove cramped and dank, awash with stink. Hobgoblin guards lurk in the shadows, muttering guttural curses, armed with spears and bows. A backroad leads to the top of the Chasm of Caves, where in its belly a trio of hobgoblins make merry with drink and song, mocking the two bodies tied to upright logs. A brief investigation illuminates a truth already known: hobgoblins are nocturnal creatures, and out spill a horde come nightfall to join their brethren in mirth. The journey to the Chasm of Caves proves to be the longest journey yet in the dead forest. A twisted and blighted inner ring presents itself across Hill Creek, where, during the night, the sound of something huge trudging through the forest can be heard. Near the end of the journey, they meet a familiar foe, one donned in armor of the blackest night, and are once again forced into melee to save an old man.
