Episode Notes
In this special Spotlight Chat, we welcome our first male guest — a therapist and lifelong dizi fan — to talk about the psychology of Turkish TV.
We explore why dizis are so addictive, how emotional storytelling creates connection across cultures, and why familiar characters like the “wounded protector” or “resilient caregiver” strike such a chord.
From Poyraz Karayel to Kiralık Aşk, from Istanbul memories to cross-cultural insights, this conversation goes beyond fandom into healing, nostalgia, and everything in between.
As always we love to hear from you, please follow us on social media and let us know what we should talk about next! Find us as "Dizi Friends" on X, Instagram, Tiktok, Facebook and Bluesky.

This week, Maha and Eda dive into a pressing question:
"Have Turkish TV series lost their magic, or is it an industry problem?"
Following the cancellation of Çift Kişilik Oda, the girls felt compelled to unpack why romantic comedies—a genre once loved both in Turkey and abroad—are now struggling to survive. Once guaranteed hits, romcoms have faced a sharp decline in ratings and nearly all new titles since 2022 have been canceled early.
Could the rise of streaming platforms be part of the issue? Are TV channels falling behind? Or is the genre simply out of touch with what audiences want?
🎧 Tune in for a thoughtful (and passionate!) conversation on the fate of Turkish romcoms, the changing dynamics of the dizi industry, and what it all means for creators and viewers alike.

Hi friends, in this week's episode our lovely guests is Daphne MacLeod, an author who reached out to us online and that's how we became friends. She was so inspired by dizis that she even wrote a book called Queen Bee and the Turk. We discuss many things in this episode mentioned below as they may be difficult to catch through us chatting. :)

*Daphne's favorite actress is Naz Göktan. She feels like Can Yaman is overrated.
*Eda mentions Asmalı Konak - a dizi from the early 2000s, if you haven't seen it, here's a link to its IMDB page: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365980/

This week, Maha and Eda have a guest on the podcast; we get to speak with the person behind Derin Universe.
Derin is a Turkish blogger who lives abroad and studied business in France and is starting her Masters in Creative Industry which includes TV and Films in London. Interestingly, Eda discovered her blog through an article where she wrote about dizis and why there were not enough female producers.
Join us for this interesting chat and we hope you will learn fun things along the way! Also interesting that this also includes the podcast's first Turkish guest. It's a rare and valuable insight to have two Turkish women from different generations talking about dizis. Things discussed in this episode center around women and the dizi industry, some things discussed may be triggering for our listeners who are sensitive around topics such as violence against women so please keep that in mind.

Episode Notes
Maha and Eda welcome you to the podcast after a long pause with a different subject than usual. With the lack of summer dizis this year they have been enjoying some reading time and this episode is all about their latest favorite genre: fantasy romance or "romantasy".
Join them for a fun adventure as they talk about the history, favorite sub-genres and also psychological and sociological reasons why it's been so popular these past few years. Some of the things mentioned throughout the episode:
"Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley
"Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer
"Outlander" series by Diana Gabaldon
"A Court of Thorns and Roses" series by Sarah J. Maas
Grimm Diaries by Cameron Jace
"Ella Enchanted" by Gail Carson Levine
"Circe" by Madeline Miller
EDA's recs:
"A Study in Drowning" by Ava Reid
"The Bird and the Sword" by Amy Harmon
The book Eda mentions towards the end where we say, spicy scenes must feel earned is "One True Love" by Linda Kage. Not half as good as the two books she recommended above but you might want to give it a chance. It's about forbidden romance and does have spicy scenes so please beware if you are underage. (We talk about it at 44.40)
-MAHA's recs:
"Ember of Ashes Quartet" by Sabaa Tahir
"Glass of Throne" series" by Sarah J Mass
"Caraval" by Stephanie Garber
"The Iron Butterfly" series by Chandra Haan
Also mentioned:
The Fourth Wing and it's sequel The Iron Flame by Rebecca Yarros
