Description
In SHIFT HAPPENS, host Claudia Mahler is curious about how women made it through turning points in their lives, and how they reflect back on them. SHIFT HAPPENS creates a space for women to pause for a moment and to share, to listen and to feel heard. A space where we connect and talk about life and its pivotal moments. About the highs and lows, the challenges and the joys. About what has been gained, and about how enriching change can be. Some things we hear are heavy, some are funny; they all put me in awe, as they are honest and raw testimonies of life.
Too often, women just get on with it — the everyday, the duties, the expectations. Too often, life-altering events are being swept under the rug, as the day must go on.
This podcast is a little window into the world. I invited women from all walks of life, and various counties, countries, and continents. I am in conversation with authors, business owners, artists, life coaches, and change-makers in the areas of academia, wellness, the arts, HR, beauty.
All these women have their individual life stories, and much wisdom to share. Lots to learn from all of them.

What is it that fascinates us in art? What does a painting do to us? Why do artists do what they do?Art is such a vast and individuell yet universal field to explore. When and why does an artist become an artist? In my conversation with New York based, American-Pakistani artist, Tanya Minhas, we explore the invisible in art. Tanya shares her fascination for nature and the tiny moments, that inspire her thinking and her work. She shares the moment, that made it inevitable for her to commit fully to a life as an artist. It had to do with facing challenges, grief and searching for a language to be able to truly express herself and her emotions. ( As she quoted from a book she once read "Life is not all HiHi-HaHa"). Words would not suffice, and she strongly felt that the only true, freeing and authentic language for her was found in speaking through art. So she did and committed to fully be and live as an artist.Tanya's Pakistani heritage strongly influences her work, which particularly reflects in her current show. Tanya integrates and balances her artistic practice with family life - working when possible in a meditative state.Tanya Minhas has been showing her work successfully throughout the Eastcoast in various group shows and exhibitions. Her current solo show "A Tapestry of Dreams" is on view in New York City with her gallery Winston Wächter. Tanya holds a degree from Princeton University and an MBA from Columbia University. She started her career in management consulting, yet later joined the Arts Student League and studied portrait painting under MaryBeth McKenzie, to eventually move into abstract work.####On another note: I am so proud and excited to announce that SHIFT HAPPENS’ Season 5 is supported by London based jewellery brand Tilly Sveaas. Listen in and feel heard, by the story of a woman who dedicates her work tirelessly to improve the positioning of women in leadership. When she started her career in corporate banking, and quickly moved through the ranks, to become a high-performer, Dr. Anino Emuwa noticed deeply rooted biases, when she became a mother, despite continuously presenting excellent results. She shares how she had to try hard to convince her colleagues, that she will not be working less, but differently and that everyone will need to get flexible. She realized how in general systematic issues beyond individual performance were holding women back.Dr. Anino shifted her focus to improving global business and society through gender equality leadership. She shares how she organically grew her global community 100 Women @ Davos including women from 109 countries. And emphsizes how change and shifts only happen when people work together towards a united goal and with a united purpose: full representation of women in leadership (even though at current pace this will approximately take another 200 years ...).She talks about barriers to women's leadership: historical workplace structures, socialization of both men and women in traditional roles, organisational policies and cultures that don't reward assertiveness in women, need for equipping women with knowledge and networks. We also discuss how men in leadership need to actively speak out and challenge hierarchical norms - still too little men are vocal to drive significant change. Dr. Anino is a global expert on women's leadership and works at the intersection of emerging technologies, entrepreneurship and inclusion. She serves on the boards of several organisations, ,is a LinkedIn top voice on gender equity and a TEDx speaker. She served as a judge, coach and regional leader for the Cartier Women's Initiative.####On another note: I am so proud and excited to announce that SHIFT HAPPENS’ Season 5 is supported by London based jewellery brand Tilly Sveaas. Rachel Cook Northway shares with me her personal journey to clean beauty. Her childhood interest in skincare was already influenced by her mother's beauty routine. After an early career in the nonprofit sector, Rachel transitioned into the clean beauty industry and worked with various brands and retailers. And built her expertise and passion. When she was pregnant with her second child, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. This experience propelled her to launch her own business post-remission. Rachel is helping women (and men) to navigate and personalise the clean beauty space. Her beauty philosophy and recommendations are simple but efficient: focus on lips, eyes and underarms as key areas for clean product adoption. She emphasizes efficacy and plant-based alternatives in clean beauty. And has a range of brands that she recommends and curates for individual needs.Rachel also advocates for occasional breaks from deodorant use, especially for breast cancer survivors. Her daily rituals for her personal wellness and recovery are morning prayers, co-sleeping with her youngest child, intermittend fasting and a plant-basesd diet. And she is avid in her workout routine on 6 times per week. For her business she is planning on expanding into her own studio space to receive clients in person. She also feels that it is important to refine the language clean beauty, to emphasize wellness over appearance standards. From Gabriela's bio: "In 2013 I was living in Mozambique as a diplomatic wife with a 5 year old gilr and working remotely on a succesful youth program that was originally devised to bring talented teenagers to the world economic forum. The organization that hosted the program was undergoing a deep redisign and despite the success of the program it was decided that the goals, international development through the work of youth, did not align with the organization’s core mission. At that point it was clear that any professional pursue I might have would need to be something of my own creation. These were the years before remote working was normalised and the luxury of flexible remote working were not widely available. At the same time, my work which had focused on supporting the community development projects young people from our network wre implementing to tackle big issues had really changed my perspective of what a person with a passion for improving the world could do. I had met young people with devastating life stories who despite all odds, or perhaps, because of them, were truly changing for the better the lives of those around them. At that point I was convinced that I needed to find a way to continue this work and how crucial it was to support those young people who are actively working towards a fair, peaceful and sustainable world. This moment was profoundly meaningful because it really pushed me to pursue my sense of purpose. To work and have a career were always life goals of mine and being faced with the reality of having to move countries every for years made pursuing those goals really difficult. I was also deeply inspired by the young people I was working with, they opened up my eyes of how important it is to work on things you are deeply passionate about and believe in.. The realization that I could not rely on existing structures to align with my passions and professional goals was both daunting and liberating. It forced me to embrace the idea that I could, and should, carve out my own path—one that reflected my commitment to fostering meaningful change.I learned that meaningful work doesn’t always fit into traditional molds and more often than not it might not be remunerated. It requires creativity, persistence, and the courage to take risks. This period of my life instilled in me the belief that creating something of value, even in uncertain circumstances, is worth pursuing. It was a lesson in adaptability, self-reliance, and persistence, which are values that continue to guide me today."Gabriela is a binational of Mexico and Switzerland, having lived in Georgia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Brazil, Switzerland, and the United States. With over eighteen years of experience in nonprofit and international development, Gabriela has been a key figure at Global Changemakers since 2009. She initially developed a grant process that has now supported over 500 youth-led development projects worldwide. Gabriela authored the influential article "By Youth, For Youth," published in the Stanford Social Innovation Review, and played a pivotal role in Global Changemakers’ growth as a co-founder when it became an independent organization in 2014.In addition to her work with Global Changemakers, Gabriela has co-authored educational tools and consulted on a range of youth-focused events and workshops. She has spoken at renowned international forums like the Estoril Conference and Unleash. Ida Beerhalter is a sought after international, financial advisor and investment powerhouse. Since 2012 she has been the Co-Head IOME, a private investment partnership of women in the Gulf region. Ida and Claudia are talking about the importance of saying "yes" to opportunities, even if you feel unqualified, as others see potential in you that you may not see yourself. We further discuss, how women investors tend to ask harder questions and focus on concrete metrics like cash-on-cash returns rather than getting carried away by projections. Ida advocates for women to exercise the power of their money and not delegate financial management without understanding. Sustainability is a key focus for Ida's future projects.Ida feels relaxed approaching 60, with the mindset that she can do anything but doesn't need to do everything. She values small moments of happiness, like appreciating new trees in her garden. Ida shares her admiration for her parents for their resilience in overcoming war trauma and building their lives. About her experience in the Middle East Ida says, that the Saudi culture is particularly welcoming and gentle, allowing for cultural mistakes and learning. Busie's father's sudden death 2 months before her graduation walk, changed her walk. She was to work for Citigroup and move back to Uganda. But she stayed and became a workaholic to deal with that trauma and thrust herself into entrepreneurship while working a 9-5pm job. As a result, she founded one of the first fashion tech companies which was then twice acquired.Another significant pivot was the birth of her 2nd child, who had severe food allergies. She was forced to move to remote working in 2012 as she was her daughter's primary caregiver. Busie left regular employment to become a stay at home mom then eventually a work from home mom. This moved her into consultancy as well as policy driven assignments such as board position, as she realized mom's careers suffer most and they are usually driven to make decisions which impact our families and the broader community. Busie realized, that we need more women at the policy tables. She has been fortunate to have doors open for others and believes also in amplifying others. She believes, if we light more candles we illuminate more light and there's an African Proverb which says "If you want to go fast go alone, if you want to go far, go together. Let's continue to build and amplify!!She reflects on what she has learned, we need to be anchored by a strong ecosystem, and that it’s imperative that we intentionally and deliberately harness positive relationships. That's why some people bounce back more easily from adversity than others. Who you surround yourself matters.
