Have you ever wondered why so many passionate occupational therapists quietly walk away from the profession, even when they still care deeply about their clients?
In this powerful episode of the OT Yourself to Freedom Podcast, Beki Eakins explores the real reason behind OT burnout. It is not just workload, staffing shortages, or long days.
It is compromised values.
If you are an occupational therapist feeling emotionally drained, disconnected from your work, or silently questioning whether you can keep going, this episode will help you understand what is really happening beneath the surface, and what your body has been trying to tell you all along.
What You’ll Learn in This Episode
In this conversation, Beki dives deep into:
Why many OTs experience moral exhaustion rather than simple burnout
What a values ladder is, and how it influences your energy, motivation, and wellbeing
How healthcare systems can force clinicians to sacrifice their highest values just to survive
Why autonomy, integrity, and human connection matter more than productivity targets
How constant documentation and tick-box assessments erode therapeutic relationships
The physical cost of misaligned work (pain, fatigue, headaches, nervous system shutdown)
Why “burnout” is often actually value grief
How losing control over your diary and clinical judgement impacts creativity and fulfilment
What changes when you build work around your values instead of the system’s
A powerful reflection question to help you identify which value is being violated right now
This episode is especially relevant if you have been searching for answers around:
occupational therapist burnout
leaving occupational therapy
lack of autonomy in healthcare
emotional exhaustion in OTs
creating meaningful work as an OT
Key Takeaway for Occupational Therapists
You did not train to become an OT to stare at screens, rush human connection, or work against your clinical judgement.
You trained because you care.
And when your ability to practise with integrity, presence, and purpose is stripped away, your nervous system responds. Often through heaviness, resistance, fatigue, or disengagement.
As Beki explains, this is not a mindset problem.
It is a values violation.
A Question to Reflect On
If you are currently feeling controlled, resentful, or trapped in your OT role, Beki invites you to ask:
Which value on your ladder is being sacrificed right now, and who benefits from that sacrifice?
Then ask your body:
How long am I willing to pay this price?
Considering a Different Way Forward?
Beki also shares how occupational therapists can reclaim autonomy by creating aligned, freedom-based online businesses, where you:
Control your diary
Decide how long you spend with clients
Create offers that reflect your highest values
Rediscover creativity, energy, and fulfilment
If you have:
3 to 10 hours per week: OT Yourself to Freedom Membership
10+ hours per week: OT Freedom Collective (6-month intensive support programme)
Both are designed to help OTs build meaningful income without sacrificing their health, family, or values.

About the Host
Beki Eakins is a business mindset and lifestyle coach for occupational therapists. After leaving traditional OT practice, she has helped hundreds of OTs worldwide design aligned online businesses that support freedom, income, and purpose, without burning out.
Starting a business rarely looks like the polished launches you see online.
Instead, it’s confusing, overwhelming, lonely, and often deeply uncomfortable.
In this episode of OT Yourself to Freedom podcast, Beki Eakins speaks honestly about the messy beginning of entrepreneurship. The fear, the self-doubt, the lack of structure, and the emotional rollercoaster that comes with building something from scratch.
If you’re questioning whether you’re doing it right, wondering if you’ve got what it takes, or feeling stretched in every direction, this episode will help you understand that nothing has gone wrong. This is the process.
Beki shares why chaos is normal at the start, how freedom can feel frightening before it feels empowering, and what really helps you move through this stage faster and with less emotional strain.
In This Episode, You’ll Learn:
Why the beginning of business feels messy, disorientating, and intense
How entrepreneurship differs from traditional careers. No approval, no safety net, just you
Why fear gets louder in your first year and how it actually keeps you sharp
How waiting for permission holds you back and how to stop doing it
Why most early fears are exaggerated and rarely linked to real risk
The impact of loneliness as a solopreneur and why community matters
Practical Tip from Beki:
Keep a running list of tasks that drain you.
Anything repetitive or unenjoyable becomes a future delegation or automation task. This simple habit protects your energy and helps your business grow sustainably.

In this powerful and thought-provoking episode of the OT Yourself to Freedom podcast, Beki Eakins challenges one of the most deeply ingrained beliefs in caring professions and entrepreneurship, that burnout is inevitable and even admirable.
Burnout is not proof that you care more. It is not a sign that you are doing meaningful work. It is a warning that you are out of alignment with your body, your values, and your life.
This episode is an honest invitation to stop normalising exhaustion, martyrdom, and over-giving, particularly within occupational therapy, healthcare, and purpose-driven businesses, and to start taking ownership of the small, daily choices that quietly lead to burnout.
If you are already feeling tired, bracing yourself for the year ahead, or telling yourself “this is just part of the job”, this conversation is for you.

What really happens when you become a mum, and why does no one talk about the emotional shift?
In this episode of the OT Yourself to Freedom Podcast, host Beki Eakins is joined by her client Helen Buteux, an occupational therapist who supports mums through the transition into motherhood using both her professional OT training and her lived experience as a mum of two.
This honest and grounding conversation explores the emotional impact of becoming a parent, the loss of confidence many mums experience, and how occupational therapy skills are uniquely placed to support mental wellbeing in early motherhood.
Helen also shares how she built a freedom-based online business as an occupational therapist while on maternity leave, navigating broken sleep, identity shifts, and the realities of caring for young children.
This episode is a must-listen for occupational therapists who feel called to create work that aligns with their values, lifestyle, and lived experience.

About Helen
Helen Buteux is a highly specialist paediatric occupational therapist with over a decade of experience supporting babies, young children, and their families in the early years. Her work combines strong clinical foundations with a compassionate understanding of motherhood.
Helen supports new and expecting mums to feel calm, confident, and connected during early motherhood by caring for both the baby and the mother. Her work is rooted in three core pillars: Your Body, Your Baby, and Your Bond, recognising that when a baby is born, a mother is born too.
Using an evidence-based yet gentle approach, Helen helps mums understand infant brain development, sensory play, motor milestones, emotional regulation, and matrescence, the identity shift into motherhood. Alongside this, she supports mums to protect their own wellbeing, confidence, and sense of self.
As a mum herself, Helen understands first-hand how overwhelming early motherhood can feel, particularly when expectations do not match reality. Her work blends clinical expertise with lived experience to create a judgement-free space where mums can stop comparing, start trusting themselves, and feel empowered in their parenting choices.
Helen is the creator of The EmpowerMum Method, a preventative and nurturing approach to early years development and maternal wellbeing, designed to help families thrive rather than just cope.

If you're an OT (or allied health professional) still sending paper handouts, long follow-up emails, or stick-figure drawings, this episode will completely shift how you think about home programs.
In this powerful and practical conversation, Beki Eakins is joined by Laura Simmons, an Australian occupational therapist turned digital health innovator and founder of Theratrak.
Laura shares how she went from paediatric OT to accidental tech founder, building a platform now used by clinics across Australia and internationally to help therapists bridge the gap between therapy sessions and real life, without burning out on admin.
In This Episode, You’ll Learn:
- Why paper handouts fail (and what works better)- How Theratrak helps therapists turn session activities into engaging, trackable home programs- How gamification (badges, rewards, avatars) increases child and family engagement- What OTs need to know before building an app or digital product- The real costs of creating an app—and why revenue matters early- How digital tools can reduce travel, time, and cost barriers to therapy- Why therapists feel more confident when they can actually see what happens at home- How Laura manages mindset, confidence, and resilience as a female founder in tech- What “freedom” really looks like when you design a business around your values

In this deeply personal episode of the OT Yourself To Freedom Podcast, Beki Eakins shares a truthful reflection on 2025, six years after leaving the NHS as a Band 6 occupational therapist.
This is not a training episode. There is no strategy or framework to follow. Instead, this episode offers an honest look at what it really means to build freedom as an occupational therapist, financially, emotionally and energetically.
Beki reflects on walking away from traditional OT work in the UK, the frustration of rigid systems, paperwork and hierarchy, and the deep inner knowing that she was finished with employed OT work for good. She shares how freedom has evolved over six years, from a risky leap into the unknown to a sustainable, values-led business that supports family life and personal wellbeing.
The episode also explores parts of business ownership that are rarely spoken about. The mental load, the responsibility, the fear during quieter months, and the reality that freedom does not mean less responsibility. It means choosing the responsibility you are willing to carry.

In today’s powerful episode of OT Yourself to Freedom, host Beki Eakins explores a conversation that most occupational therapists rarely hear inside traditional services — yet it’s one of the biggest opportunities for our profession:
Ageing is not decline. Ageing is an occupational transition. And OTs are perfectly placed to lead the way.

If you’re an Occupational Therapist interested in expanding beyond the paediatric world, building a freedom-based online business, or stepping into a niche with enormous demand, this episode is essential listening.
What This Episode Covers
How social media algorithms distort our perception of ageing
Why OTs’ views on ageing are often unintentionally skewed
The neuroscience behind midlife brain changes
Historical perspectives: When ageing was honoured, not feared

If you’re an Occupational Therapist feeling stretched by long waiting lists, high demand, or the emotional weight of supporting neurodivergent families, this episode may be exactly what you need.
In Episode 111, host Beki Eakins speaks with Anna Willis, a highly specialised Paediatric Occupational Therapist and Advanced Sensory Integration Practitioner, about how she transitioned from a traditional, high-pressure clinical service into creating Calm Club - a parent-led online programme that is transforming home life for families.
This conversation explores what happens when we stop focusing solely on “fixing the child” and instead support parents to understand sensory needs and develop their own self-regulation. By shifting the model, outcomes improve, families feel more empowered, and practitioners reduce burnout while reclaiming their time and energy.
What You’ll Learn in This Episode
- Why traditional one-to-one OT services often lead to exhaustion and waiting lists- The importance of supporting the parent’s nervous system as well as the child’s- How sensory integration can be embedded into everyday family routines- The practical steps involved in shifting from a clinic-based approach to an online programme- What sustainable, neuroaffirming practice looks like in real home environments- How Calm Club creates more capacity, calm and connection for families and practitioners alike
If you’re considering evolving your practice, offering support online, or simply want deeper insight into sensory regulation within families, this episode will be valuable, grounding and inspiring.

Anna set Calm Club up following the never ending demand for sensory-based support for neurodiverse children, and her own experience of becoming a parent and experiencing overwhelm, requiring her to put her regulation theory and skills into direct practice for herself and her family.
Anna loves being creative and playful, and following this passion to support neurodiverse families is creating a growing platform to support parents to tap into this for themselves. Calm Club pulls on sensory integration theory, emotional regulation techniques and play - for all ages. Anna is passionate about combining her ‘bricks and mortar’ and online worlds together to create a truly excellent service for families to feel supported, whilst allowing Anna the time to spend with her own family.

If you have ever felt exhausted, overwhelmed, or like you are constantly pushing yourself to keep up in your business or workplace, this episode will feel like a powerful exhale.
In this conversation, Beki sits down with Renae Fieck, Occupational Therapist, cycle alignment mentor and author of Cycle Sync Your Business. Together, they explore why so many women in business (especially OTs transitioning online) struggle with burnout, lack of consistency, emotional highs and lows, and ongoing fatigue.
The truth is this: Your hormones are not the issue. Your business model is.
Most productivity systems, business strategies, and workplace structures were designed for male hormonal patterns (a consistent 24-hour cycle). Women’s bodies function on a 28-day cycle with phases that shift energy, focus, emotional capacity, and creativity.
When you learn to work with your cycle instead of against it, your business becomes easier, more spacious, more aligned, and more successful.
This episode is perfect for: • Occupational Therapists feeling burnt out or overwhelmed • Female entrepreneurs wanting more ease and sustainability • Women craving success without sacrificing wellbeing • OTs transitioning to online private practice or coaching • Anyone who wants to understand their hormones, energy and workflow more deeply
What You’ll Learn in This Episode
Why women are not meant to work the same every day • How your menstrual cycle influences clarity, focus and motivation • What burnout really means for high-achieving women and OTs in healthcare • How to plan content, launches and business tasks around your cycle • Why rest is not laziness, but a strategic performance tool • How to build a business model that supports your wellbeing and income
