Hi, I’m Dr. Ioana Popa, co-founder of Team For The Soul®, Christian mom and wife, speaker, spiritual care life coach, physician-psychiatrist, educator, passionate about learning, doing ministry work and giving to others like Christ, which unfortunately led me to chronic stress and burnout.

I said yes to everyone asking for help and then pushed through all my commitments, with no time for myself, assuming that if I do self-care on the weekends or vacations I would be fine. But I was not.

After my second burnout, I looked for help from both the psychological disciplines and the Christian faith, to only find disjointed guidance, many times at odds with each other.

Finally, I realized that if I wanted to lead and serve in Christ with energy and joy, I needed to create a simple system for thriving in Christ, integrating science, psychology, spiritual care and faith, which now I'm excited to share with you.

And if you are ready to thrive toward your highest potential from a grounded foundation with Christ at the center, let’s dive in.

Sending you many blessings and prayers in Christ,
Dr. Ioana

What does it take to move past doubt - doubt in ourselves, in others, or situations we are in? Is there a different mindset that can help us overcome this doubt? And what does it mean to see beauty as a characteristic and a resourceful state of being, as a way to get to know God? These are thoughts and questions that Thomaida Hudanish and I talk about in this week's Renewal Conversation. Thomaida is the co-founder of Beauty First Films, which recently released the film - St. Amphilochios of Patmos. She is an avid traveler, writer, and passionate about her Orthodox faith. After eight years of working as a parish administrator, she volunteered at orphanage schools in India and Israel-Palestine, engaging a community of armchair travelers via a regular newsletter. She was also blessed to work for the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of San Francisco, supporting clergy and parishes in evangelism ministry. In this episode, you will hear Thomaida and I talk about: 🔅 The beauty of seeking God in all things, with patience, and also the beauty of what comes after. 🔅 A unique way to deal with the doubting parts (you don't want to miss this one!)🔅 Her perspective on one's relationship with God.🔅 How saying short prayers throughout her day keeps her grounded and other nuggets of wisdom. The Bible Verse that guides her is this: "The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him. As we keep growing both professionally and personally in Christ, we become better versions of ourselves and we see the transformation. Nonetheless, life happens, and we might get triggered, respond in ways that we are not proud of, and then start wondering "What did I do wrong?", "Why can't I fix this?" or "Why can't I do this?" and we feel we go backwards or in circles instead of forward. In reality, we are never going back (although it feels that way), as growth is more of a spiral movement! Why does this happen? Every system, from the smallest molecule to our bodies, our inner psychological & spiritual world, communities, all the way to the stars, exists in states of equilibrium (Homeostasis). As we reach toward our highest potential, subconscious forces can pull us back toward the old ways of being, to the state of prior equilibrium - so it's natural to feel this way. These reactions are driven by old conditionings, and parts of us that might have been hurt in the past. In IFS (Internal Family Systems), these younger versions of ourselves are called "EXILES". But here is the good news: God is a God of love, compassion and healing, and can bring light to the inner folds of our being! Internal Family Systems (IFS) Part 5: EXILES🔅When we are triggered, it is possible that our younger versions of ourselves, the Exiles, might need support from you and God.🔅 Instead of trying to "fix" the parts, we can nurture and connect with it from our True Self and the unfailing love of God.🔅 Getting support from someone you trust is important, and when in doubt, consult with your medical provider, an IFS therapist or practitioner. Inside this episode I share some quick tips about: 🔅 Journaling + Contemplative Practices and how they can nurture the Exile Parts so we can eventually shift away from negative patterned thinking.  Click PLAY to watch this episode ▶️👉 https://youtu.be/SiRYWAWY1qI________________________ 🌟 And if this episode and channel blesses you, leave us a FIVE-STAR Review and DOWNLOAD the episodes you love. In this week's Renewal Conversation, I had the joy of talking with Debbie Caudle, who is a marriage therapist and relationship coach with a passion for helping Christian couples repair what’s broken, rediscover what matters, and rebuild marriages with purpose. Through her signature Marriage in Bloom recovery program, Debbie equips women (and couples) to face the hard stuff: conflict that never resolves, connection that’s grown cold, and confusion about where the relationship is even headed. In this Renewal Conversation, you will hear about:🔅 Debbie's story of connecting with God through her struggles of divorce. 🔅 How she created daily habits to make sure that God stays #1 in her life. 🔅 What it looked and felt like to start over after using her savings to do mission work with her ex-husband. 🔅 How she commits to a daily rhythm of self-care that provides grounding and peace. There's so much more, like...🔅 Tips around boundaries of time between home and work.🔅 The beauty of using a Bible Journal and listening to a dramatized Bible! Debbie's favorite Bible verse is this: "For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord." What happens when an unwanted fire erupts in someone's home? The firefighters are called and they respond quickly to help put out the fire before it spreads. Similarly, when we have internal fires (pain, suffering, sadness, shame), they need to be put out; therefore, we have internal parts that show up quickly to distract and soothe our mind and body - the Firefighter part. As described in IFS (Internal Family Systems) methodology, these parts are very reactive and occur as a response to a great amount of stress or unpleasant experiences, either current or from the past. The firefighter parts can look like any of the following: a glass of wine (or 2), overeating, working out (a lot), shopping online, scrolling endlessly on social media, or watching shows for hours. IFS MINI SERIES Part 4: the Firefighter Parts Firefighters are a part of our internal ecosystem that:✨ Are single-minded, with one job: to soothe us no matter what.✨ At their best and in moderation, are helpful coping mechanisms. ✨ Usually stay dormant, unless we are triggered.✨Under stress or due to prior conditioning, can become extreme, bringing unhelpful behaviors. Have you wondered what it truly means to trust God? It can actually look like many different things, such as co-creating with God, taking steps in faith, being comfortable with the unknown, following an open door, or simply believing that He can and will show up for you. This week, I had the joy of interviewing Lisa Anderson, the director of Boundless program for young adults at Focus on the Family, and host of the podcast - “The Boundless Show”. The topic of trust has not only been a major part of Lisa's own journey in Christ, but also a message she highlights in her ministry with young adults. Lisa loves connecting with young adults who are single and strategizing how to better equip themselves for life, relationships and faith that goes the distance. In this Renewal Conversation, Lisa and I talk about: 🔅 The beauty of asking God for help and allowing God's timing to happen. 🔅 How healthy boundaries look from the example of Jesus Christ.🔅 How relationships with others can mirror your relationship with God. 🔅 How trusting God is a decision, knowing that He IS our provider. 🔅 Lisa's renewal routine and her nuggets of staying centered in Christ. The Bible Verse that inspires her is this: "In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength, but you would have none of it." In Hebrews, St. Paul tells us this: "And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith." - Hebrews 12:1 (NIV). As Christian professional women & servant leaders, we lead in many capacities, which brings a great amount of responsibility, and therefore, to keep ourselves moving forward, we call upon our "Manager Parts" as described in Internal Family Systems (IFS). These parts help us problem solve, persevere, and keep running the race. However, if we simply follow the path with our noses to the ground and don't stop to align ourselves with God, we ramp up our nervous system and eventually burn out. This is not exactly what God intended when he said to persevere, and He certainly does not want us to burnout in the process. And the IFS psychological methodology can help us to befriend and unblend from the MANAGERS, so that we can run the race without burning out. Internal Family Systems (IFS) Part 3: MANAGER Parts - Notes:🔅 They are very helpful as they support us to function at our best, so they need our appreciation.🔅 Like all internal parts, they are single-minded and they can also get us into trouble.🔅 We need to find a healthy way to unblend from them to stay in balance, without burning out, so we can keep serving Christ. 🔅 Many times, we confuse them with our identity. We could be at work, at home, with friends, or on social media, and all of a sudden, someone says something, and we are triggered. What was once a peaceful state turns into worry, frustration, or self-doubt. Sometimes we can think through a situation and return to our center, but at other times, the emotions and thoughts linger in the back of our consciousness, draining us. What do we do? And is there a framework that can help us quickly go back to that 'peace that surpasses all understanding'? This Week's Concept: Your TRUE SELF When we are triggered, there are many ways to come back to our grounded presence, but one of the most effective methodologies is that of IFS - Internal Family Systems, helping us to 'unblend' from our reactions and tap into our TRUE SELF. In IFS, True Self...🔅 Is not in opposition to False Self; it is beyond any dualities.🔅Is that space inside, your essence, which is untouched and unharmed by circumstances.🔅 Has many qualities (described as the 8 C's) which, in our Christian faith, are described in a powerful Bible verse. It’s common for us to take from what we see in the world around us and use this as a barometer of our life's expectations and practices. But how many times do we pause and think, what did Jesus do? And what can we learn from Christ's life and interactions? This week, I was delighted to interview Presvytera Kerry Pappas, who has studied Christ’s compassion and the ways He took care of himself in his humanity. Kerry is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, a graduate from Holy Cross School of Theology and the coordinator for seminarian and clergy couples care at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. She is a trainer and facilitator for Prepare and Enrich, which is a premarital and marriage enrichment program, and enjoys leading women's and couples retreats. In this Renewal Conversation you will learn about:🔅 The 2 pivotal moments in Presv. Kerry's life that grounded her in faith.🔅 Insights into Jesus' humanity.🔅 Clarifying the important distinction between Empathy and Compassion - so you can listen to others' suffering without being drained. 🔅 Kerry's amazing new book offering weekly insights to help nurture a marriage.  The Bible Verse that inspires her is this: "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me." 💡 WEEKLY TIPIf you've ever felt grounded and peaceful one day and wake up the next, feeling self-critical and frustrated, then you are not alone. There is a reason for this. This state of being internally fragmented makes us feel like we are taking two steps forward and one step back. And we mistakenly take any state of being as our identity. But our true identity comes from Christ. So the question, as many people have asked me, is this - How can I better understand myself and find healing while staying grounded in Christ? One of the most effective methodologies is Internal Family Systems, an evidence-based practice that helps people heal by accessing their various inner parts ( as in "a part of me wants this and a apart of me wants that"). And as a Christian, I have found that this is an amazing method because it assumes that at the core, we have something untouched or unharmed, our essence - which for us as Christians, is the Image of God! Since this is such a powerful methodology and I often get many questions regarding this topic, we will have a Mini Series covering the following... IFS & Christianity MINI SERIES coming up: 1. Introduction to IFS (Internal Family Systems)2. True Self3. Protective Parts - Managers4. Protective Parts - Firefighters5. Exiles - the vulnerable parts6. Polarities 7. What the Healing process looks like with IFS Through the IFS methodology, we can be released from our past bondages and discover our true identity in Christ. Many people often question the integration between their Christian faith and science/psychology. They wonder, how can these two exist together? Actually, there is NO contradiction! And here is why - Science and Christian faith respond to different questions. This week, I interviewed Dr. Angela Deulen, a Professor of Psychology at California Baptist University, who helps her students and clients see that these two areas can coexist with light and joy! She teaches behavioral neuroscience as well as clinical studies for graduate students. She is a licensed marriage and family therapist, as well as a licensed clinical counselor and a Christian nonfiction author. Using her background in interpersonal neurobiology, alongside her background in Biblical Hebrew and Old Testament Studies, Dr. Deulen bridges the gap between cutting-edge brain science and timeless Biblical truth. Together, Dr. Angela and I discuss:🔅 How she found Christ through a historical lens.🔅 How to rewire your brain through Christian practices.🔅 The idea behind holding your thoughts captive.🔅 The importance of our worldview.🔅 Epigenetics and more. Dr. Angela's favorite Bible verse is this: "I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living." As Christians, we don’t like to be critical or judgmental toward others. It is common, though, to believe that it is best to be self-critical in order to be more humble. Although great self-examination is essential in our path for healthy humility, too much of it can do inner damage and erode our sense of confidence. What is not commonly known is that Criticism and Self-Criticism are actually two sides of ONE coin, stemming from anger. WEEKLY NUGGET: What is Anger? 1. Anger is a natural response (coming from a part of our brain called the amygdala) which can either be directed outward towards another person, or inward towards oneself. 2. Anger is a raw energy that can be harvested. Whether you're married or not, in a relationship or hope to be some day, we know that relationships don't come without their challenges. This week I had the privilege of interviewing Sophia Dykstra, who is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Addictions Counselor, and has been practicing for 15 years. Sophia enjoys working with couples and families, helping them heal and thrive. She truly finds great joy in the work she does and it is evident through our conversation in this episode. In this Renewal Conversation, Sophia and I talk about:🔅 The Gottman psychological research on couples and the "4 horsemen of the apocalypse" in relationships.🔅The right alignment and "order of operations" in a relationship that will help it thrive. 🔅 The importance of Rituals of Connection. The Bible Verse that guides Sophia is this: "But now, thus says the LORD, who created you, O Jacob, And He who formed you, O Israel: 'Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine." There is a common dilemma many of us contemplate - we want to be completely free in Christ, but we struggle with conforming to the world’s demands. And as professional Christian women and servant leaders, of course, we do not want to conform to the world. We are inspired by the bible verse "and do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." Romans 12:2 (NKJV) We want to be our very best and filled with the light of Christ so we can offer others the perspective of the Kingdom - not the world. The Problem: The pull toward conformity, as a social dynamic, is more powerful than we think or even realize, and many times is subconscious. How many times do we have that uneasy feeling and accept doing things, because we don’t want to disappoint people? It is only natural that we want to be accepted by others at work, church, or in our neighborhood. And things in groups can spread very quickly, leaving our conformity unnoticed. Nonetheless, we are not at the mercy of this powerful social dynamic! With awareness we can stay in the gap and choose a different response. In order to discern the subconscious powerful group dynamic of conformity, we want to prepare ahead of time by examining ourselves so we can start shifting the patterns. Here are 2 questions to ask yourself to see if you are under the pressure of conformity: 1. What do you feel you have to do in group situations? Take notice of any "I must do," "I have to," or "I should's". 2. What might happen if I don't do this (fill in the situation)? What is the fear? The psychology of conformity has been researched extensively. In today's episode I will highlight psychological research on conformity, as well as the tips mentioned above so that it might help you find conformity and true freedom in Christ.  Click PLAY to watch this episode ▶️👉 https://youtu.be/iNkti4L1rFY_______________________ Do you want to start your day grounded with Christ, body, mind, heart and soul? Our guest this week is the author of a gripping book called, Saving My Assassin. Her journey is so inspiring and a reminder of how we can be a witness to Christ in ways we can not even imagine. Virginia Prodan is an international human rights attorney, author, and sought-after international keynote speaker. She is also the host of Courageous Leadership Podcast and an allied attorney with Lions Defending Freedom. Virginia was a young attorney in Romania under communism, where she spent most of her time searching for the truth. And when she finally found the pages of the most forbidden book in Romania - the Bible - Virginia accepted the divine call to defend fellow followers of Christ against unjust persecution. In this Renewal Conversation, we discuss:🔅 Virginia's story of courage and hope in the face of intimidation, house arrest, and death.🔅 How God's dream for you is SO much bigger than yours. 🔅 The encounter with a client that brought her into a deeper relationship with Christ and helped her save her assassin. 🔅 How God is on our side and He never loses a battle! One of the questions I get the most is ‘how do we end up in burnout? What are some personal root causes?' Burnout is not a diagnosis, but a syndrome initially described in the workforce. Nowadays, especially after the pandemic, many people have started to use this word outside of work as a sense of general stress and depletion. Interestingly enough, burnout does not come with bells and whistles, so prevention becomes really important; therefore, identifying the root causes to avoid them is paramount. Here is what I discovered in my professional work with many clients and students about the reasons for burnout - see below: 1. Misalignment with our values, priorities and overarching life goals. 2. Suppressing or ignoring the needs of our body.3. Suppressing or ignoring the needs of our mind.4. Suppressing or ignoring the needs of our emotions.5. Ignoring our soul - true self. In this short episode, I go over these and the quick steps you can incorporate into your DAILY HABITS to prevent it. Yes! That's what it means - burnout is preventable - and the KEY is to focus on your Daily Habits, and take small steps today, so small that you cannot fail. There is something very powerful about connecting with each other as Christian women through prayer. And we can do this even if we are not physically in the same space and time! In the moment you are reading this, there is someone praying to Christ right now. We can join this amazing web of prayers and light at any moment. And when you pray, know that you have a cosmic impact for the Kingdom and bring God's light into the world. Like a pebble making a ripple in the water, so do our personal prayers make a huge impact on this world. And when we do pray, we invite Christ and the heavenly kingdom into the present moment! 1. Prayers do not always need to be with words - just by being, thinking about someone with love, and sending light and compassion, we have an impact. It all starts from the inside-out.2. You can join the network of prayers right NOW. Don't wait for the perfect time to do this!3. I prepared a short episode ⬇️ so we can pray TOGETHER across time and space with St. Paul's words from the BIBLE. In the same way we have a body, and need our eyes, head, arms and legs, we also need and CAN SUPPORT each other.
