Welcome! Part Two of our Christmas Series takes us to a surprising movie: Stanley Kubrick's Eyes Wide Shut. This was a troubled production--even by Kubrick's legendary standards--with lots of backstage intrigue, especially concerning star couple Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. It also ended up in the Guinness Book of World Records, and not in a good way. Find out all the hot details, and what we really thought of this fascinating and flawed movie! (And yes, it is somehow a Christmas movie.)#Cinemavino #90s #StanleyKubrick #EyesWideShut #TomCruise #NicoleKidman #horror #Christmas
For this week’s Cinemavino, we take a look at The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It.  In a broader discussion, we cover films that claim to be based on real events, and what obligation they have to the actual truth. Also, we draw movies to screen for our summer season, where we’re diving into forgotten/overlooked sequels to blockbuster movies.  As always, we use a few no-no words, and a few spoilers may slip out.  Use your own discretion. Enjoy!
It’s the third installment of our baseball series, and we’re dusting off a 90s classic:  The Sandlot.  This one has major nostalgia vibes for all of us, and for sheer fun factor, it holds up really well.  As for wine, we drink a delicious Müller-Thurgau from Oregon. (A note:  If you want to impress your friends, this is how you pronounce it:  MOO-ler TUR-gow.  Also, a correction:  I cited this grape as Austrian in origin, but it actually comes from neighboring Germany.  I think I just associate it with Austria because all our European Thurgaus in this market are from there.) It’s part two of our baseball series!  For this installment, we look at an all-time favorite:  A League of Their Own.  Featuring an all-star cast, this film tells an important part of WWII history and women’s athletics.  Plus, it’s got tons of great quotes, and it’s a lot of fun. For vino, this series pairs up with approachable wines for ballgames and grill food.  Los Conenjos Malditos is an excellent little Tempranillo from Spain.  You can hear all our tasting notes in the episode! We’re heading out the ballgame!  This week’s Cinemavino kicks off our six-week series of baseball movies.  Episode one is at the top of my all-time favorites:  Bull Durham.  It was a modest hit when it came out, but Ron Shelton’s rom-com has slowly gained steam as one the best baseball flicks ever. We pair this cult classic with an easy-drinking white wine from Portugal.  Plus, as a bonus, we throw in a delicious Kolsch beer from Oregon! To read my full review of Bull Durham, click here! A Morbius Mini-Episode

A Morbius Mini-Episode

2022-04-0414:04

For this mini-installment, Travis and I give our thoughts on Marvel’s latest villain-centric flick, Morbius.  We have moderately different opinions on the subject.  This episode is pretty much spoiler-free, so you should be safe if you haven’t seen it yet. To read my full review, click here! The post A Morbius Mini-Episode appeared first on Cinemavino.
We conclude our series on Oscar snubs with an all-time classic Western:  The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly! It’s one of the most stylized and influential films ever made, and a must-see for any serious movie buff.  Plus, it features prime Clint Eastwood and an iconic score by Ennio Morricone! Trust us, you don’t wanna miss it. For wine, we pick a delicious red grape that’s gotten a bad rap over the years.  Listen in to learn more! Zodiac (2007)

Zodiac (2007)

2022-03-2335:18

Tonight’s Cinemavino continues our look at all-time Oscar snubs.  For part three, we tackle a David Fincher classic–Zodiac.  It’s engrossing, intelligent true crime epic, centered on the hunt for one of our country’s most famous serial killers.  An all-star cast delivers incredible performances, and Fincher creates an atmosphere of genuine suspense, despite this being based on historical events.  Incredibly, Zodiac received not one Oscar nomination. For vino, we’re pairing wines that get a bad rap.  Tonight:  Riesling, which is generally dismissed as a sweet white.  That’s not always the case.  The Ravines from New York is a great example.  Be sure and listen in for our tasting notes: Next up, we discuss one of the great Westerns of all time! Rounders (1998)

Rounders (1998)

2022-03-1642:20

Tonight’s episode of Cinemavino continues our series on the best films to be completely snubbed by the Oscars.  Rounders survived so-so reviews and box office to endure as an all-time cult classic.  At the very least, John Malkovich should’ve snagged a nomination for Best Supporting Actor.  His work here is scene stealing and tremendous. To pair with this topic, we’re drinking wines that’ve also never received a fair shake.  Chardonnay certainly fits that bill.  Most people think of the big California oak and butter bombs, but there are plenty chards from other regions with a completely different flavor profile. We try one from Washington’s Columbia Valley, and a classic from Burgundy:  The chard from Revelry, and the Macon Villages from Louis Jabot, which range from $18 to $25, respectively.  Be sure and listen in for our tasting notes! To read my full review of Rounders, click here! Next week, tune in for one of the most underrated true crime movies ever made! The post Rounders (1998) appeared first on Cinemavino.
Heat (1995)

Heat (1995)

2022-03-1041:44

This episode kicks off our March series, where we look at the best movies that were never nominated for an Oscar.  Our first installment features an all-time classic:  Michael Mann’s Heat, starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer, and many others.  It’s a three-hour crime epic with phenomenal performances, trend-setting direction, and one of the most incredible bank heists in cinema history.  If you’re a movie buff, this is one you have to check off the list. As with our Batman podcast, we’re also discussing wines that have garnered an unfair reputation.  At the top of that list is Merlot, one of the great old-school grapes.  For this installment, we try the Camp Merlot, which turns out to be very fruit-forward and easy-drinking–perfect for binging classic movies. To read my written review of Heat, click here!   Next up, we tackle the best poker-based movie ever made.  Enjoy! The post Heat (1995) appeared first on Cinemavino.
The Batman (2022)

The Batman (2022)

2022-03-0953:15

Tonight, Sean and I take a look at one of the biggest releases of the year:  Matt Reeves’ reboot of The Batman.  We have slightly different opinions of the finished product.  This podcast is mostly spoiler-free, but the last few minutes *might* contain a few mild plot hints.  Don’t worry–we’ll give you a heads up before we spoil anything. Also, March kicks off our series of all-time biggest Oscar snubs.  We’ll pair these movies with wines that, for whatever reason, get a bad rap.  This starts with Merlot, which has garnered an unfair reputation as a soft red.  That’s total BS, and we’ll tell you why in the podcast.  For this episode, we enjoy the Merlot from L’Ecole Winery, out of Washington State.  It’s a classic example of the grape:  Full-bodied, oaky, dry, and built to last. Now, enjoy another fine episode of Cinemavino!   To read my review of The Batman, click right here!  The post The Batman (2022) appeared first on Cinemavino.
Mando on Brando

Mando on Brando

Better late than never!  For this week’s Cinemavino, we take a look at the third and fourth episodes of The Mandalorian‘s second season.  Next week, hopefully we’ll back into the normal swing of things. As always, our podcast is NSFW, and listener discretion is advised.  Enjoy!
Fair warning:  This episode goes heavy on the vino.  We indulged in a few too many glasses before we sat down for this Oscar preview, and things get a little goofy.  I’ll be honest, this one was a challenge to edit.  Still, we do breakdown the Oscar favorites, as best we can.   The post An Overserved Oscar Preview for 2022 appeared first on Cinemavino.
City of Angels (1998)

City of Angels (1998)

2022-02-2336:27

We conclude our Valentine’s Day/Date Movie series with City of Angels.  It’s definitely the oddest and most cerebral of this month’s offerings.  On the plus side, it does have a bitchin’ soundtrack, with lots of killer 90s vibes. For vino, we tried the sparkling Vouvray, from Champalou.  Vouvray is Chenin Blanc, and this one has all the hallmarks:  It has a dry minerality, but with fun, festive notes of lemongrass and dried apples. This one retails for around $30, not exactly cheap, but way more affordable than any legit champagne. To read my full review of City of Angels, click here! For tonight’s episode, we continue our look at The Legend of Vox Machina, now on Amazon Prime.  The first season is dropping in groups of three, and we’re discussing 7,8, and 9.  *SPOILERS ABOUND* so check it out, and come back here! It’s time for one last look at The Book of Boba Fett!  We discuss episode 7, and share our thoughts on the first season as a whole.  Naturally, *spoilers abound*!  Proceed with caution! Next up, we look at the next three episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina!  Enjoy!   The post The Book of Boba Fett, Episode 7 *spoilers appeared first on Cinemavino.
Superbad (2007)

Superbad (2007)

2022-02-1631:16

Our Valentine’s/date movie spectacular continues with Superbad!  To be fair, as Sean says, this film is more “com” than “rom,” but it’s definitely a hilarious classic, and perfect to share with a partner for a romantic evening. To pair with this 2000s comedy masterpiece, we drink Naveran, a little grower Cava from Spain.  Spain is a huge producer of sparkling wine, so it seemed appropriate for this Valentine’s Day series.  This one had combined flavors of limestone, anis, and fresh hay to make for a perfect bubbly to drink with such a fun movie.  Plus, it clocks in around $20, if you’re on a tighter budget this year. Next up, we take a look at a much heavier romantic film, City of Angels! The post Superbad (2007) appeared first on Cinemavino.
This mini-episode continues our look at Vox Machina, the new animated series on Amazon.  Machina drops in 3 episode chunks, so tonights discussion will cover the 4th, 5th, and 6th episodes of the first season.  As always, SPOILERS ABOUND, so proceed with caution.   The post Vox Machina, Episodes 4,5, and 6 *spoilers appeared first on Cinemavino.
We continue our look at The Book of Boba Fett, now streaming on Disney+.  This penultimate episode once again focuses on The Mandalorian, and his relationship with Grogu.  Get ready for tons of Star Wars cameos!  SPOILERS ABOUND, proceed with caution! The post The Book of Boba Fett, Episode 6. *spoilers appeared first on Cinemavino.
Long Shot (2019)

Long Shot (2019)

2022-02-0932:06

This week’s episode continues our February date movie spectacular.  We take a good look at Long Shot, a 2019 rom-com that stars Seth Rogen and Charlize Theron.  It’s a flip of My Fair Lady/Pygmalion/She’s All That, with Rogen as the frumpy swan.  I watched on actual date night with my wife, and was pretty impressed! To read my full review, click here! Our next date flick goes way more com than rom with the 2000s classic, Superbad.   The post Long Shot (2019) appeared first on Cinemavino.
