Written by: Elder Joseph of VatopediPublished by: The Great & Holy Monastery of Vatopedi (Holy Mountain Series - 2)https://www.vatopedi.com/en/product/books-and-music/books/imv-0195/030112000001/saint-joseph-the-hesychast-life-and-teachings-semi-hardbackhttps://www.holymountainseries.com/Saint Joseph the Hesychast is widely known today as one of the most niptic and mystic of the recent elders of the Orthodox Church. On the occasion of his recent enrollment into the ranks of the Saints of the Orthodox Church, we present to the world the republication of the first book of the Life of the Saint, written by one of his disciples, Elder Joseph of Vatopedi, of blessed memory, who lived by his side in the remote caves in the “desert” of Mount Athos. “The Elder used to tell us that the experience of love for one’s neighbor is revealed to him who prays in truth; and more specifically, ‘When grace is operative in the soul of someone who is praying, then he is flooded with the love of God, so that he can no longer bear what he experiences. Afterwards, this love turns towards the world and man, whom he comes to which doesn’t really work here love so much that he seeks to take upon himself the whole of human pain and misfortune so that everyone else might be freed from it. In general, he suffers with every grief and misery, and even for dumb animals, so that he weeps when he thinks that they are suffering. These are properties of love, but it is prayer that activates them and calls them forth. This is why those who are advanced in prayer do not cease to pray for the world. To them belongs even the continuation of life, however strange and audacious this may seem. And you should know that, if such people disappear, then the end of this world will come.’” Telegram version with downloadable mp3 for "off-line" use: https://t.me/athoniteaudio/9817

"Adam, father of all mankind, in paradise knew the sweetness of the love of God; and so when for his sin he was driven forth from the garden of Eden, and was widowed of the love of God, he suffered grievously and lamented with a mighty moan. And the whole desert rang with his lamentations. His soul was racked as he thought: 'I have grieved my beloved Lord.' He sorrowed less after paradise and the beauty thereof - he sorrowed that he was bereft of the love of God, which insatiably, at every instant, draws the soul to Him.In the same way the soul which has known God through the Holy Spirit but has afterwards lost grace experiences the torment that Adam suffered. There is an aching and a deep regret in the soul that has grieved the beloved Lord.Adam pined on earth, and wept bitterly, and the earth was not pleasing to him. He was heartsick for God, and this was his cry:'My soul wearies for the Lord, and I seek Him in tears.'Thus did Adam lament, and the tears steamed down his face on to his beard, on to the ground beneath his feet, and the whole desert heard the sound of his moaning."- page 448 from The Writings of St. Silouan the Athonite as complied and edited by St. Sophrony of Essex

Concentrating their entire being within, they made their heart heaven and lived paradise on earth, the Lord dwelling with them. They left us their lives as guides so that we could follow their footprints to the priceless peace found only in God.Published by: Saint Anthony's Greek Orthodox Monastery Press - Arizona
