Have you ever considered how religious texts have shaped belief systems, power structures, and the way we perceive truth? In Chapter 4 of Yuval Noah Harari’s Nexus, we dive into the hidden mechanics of control through information systems.
Here’s what you’ll discover in this week’s Book Club:
How religions use superhuman narratives to create legitimacy and power.
Why books were revolutionary tools for controlling knowledge.
The collective delusions behind witch hunts and their modern parallels.
How the scientific method’s acceptance of human error redefined truth.
From the Oracle of Delphi to medieval witch trials, history shows that information has long been wielded as a weapon of control. Now, as we enter the AI age, the stakes are higher than ever. What do these lessons from the past mean for the future of narrative influence in a world shaped by algorithms?
Whether you’re a history buff, a critical thinker, or curious about the forces shaping human behavior, this discussion will challenge your understanding of truth, power, and storytelling in the information age.
Hit play, subscribe, and share—this conversation will change how you view the narratives shaping our world.

Welcome to the Thinking On Paper Book Club! This week we're reading Chapter 3 of Nexus, by Yuval Noah Harari and asking how stories shape societies and how documents transform them into systems of power and control.
If you’ve ever wondered how storytelling, bureaucracy, and information networks influence the world, this discussion is for you.
We start with the shift from narratives to lists, exploring how bureaucracies emerged to organize intersubjective realities. I then ask Jeremy to discuss the evolution of human collaboration, from oral traditions to written records, and how documentation has both enabled and limited societal progress.
Are we hardwired for storytelling or bureaucracy? Is our dependence on documentation diminishing critical thinking?
Topics range from Shakespeare’s timeless works to the complexities of modern AI and misinformation. With references to Alan Watts, Kafka, and even the biology of DNA, this is a rich discussion about the systems we create—and the power they wield over our lives.
Are we shaping bureaucracy, or is it shaping us?

Welcome to the Thinking On Paper Book Club. We're reading Chapter 2 of Yuval Noah Harari's Nexus, and it's all about how stories influence societies, build trust, and create shared realities.
You'll learn how storytelling help humans organize, shape religions, nations, and corporations and our collective reality.
From Stalin and Jesus to Coca-Cola and Bitcoin, Mark Fielding and Jeremy Gilbertson show you why these are nothing but stories and shared reality. You'll also learn how narratives drive trust among strangers and how you can use it to unify large groups.
Guest Mustafa Quadri joins the conversation, adding fresh perspectives on the importance of stories in connecting people. We ask:
- Are nations and corporations just shared myths?
- Why do certain narratives become universally accepted?
- How do stories influence behaviour and decision-making?
📘 Grab your copy of Nexus and share your thoughts in the comments.
Please like, subscribe, and share.

It's book club time, and we're reading The Order of Time, by Carlo Rovelli... This week the book review reaches its climax, the end of time, the end of the book... What have you learnt about time? The lack of time, quantum time, and how do you use what time you have wisely?
Benjamin Franklin said, "once you lose it, you’ll never find it again." Theophrastrus said, "it was the most valuable thing you can spend." Pericles said it was "the wisest counsellor of all." Oscar Wilde said "punctuality steals it away."
Turns out they were all wrong.
Ladies and gentlemen, Albert Einstein:
“The distinction between the past, present and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion.”
Or,
“Put your hand on a hot stove for a minute and it seems like an hour. Sit with a pretty girl for an hour, and it seems like a minute.”
Isaac Newton said, “Absolute, true and mathematical time, of itself, and from its own nature flows equably without relation to anything external.”
Aristotle said, “Remember that time slurs over everything, let all deeds fade, blurs all writings and kills all memories. Exempt are only those which dig into the hearts of men by love.”
Time really is all we have. And in this months book club, we're talking about it in more detail than we ever thought possible. We're reading:
- The Order of Time, by Carlo Rovelli.
Please Enjoy The Book.

Welcome to book club. We're still reading the Order of Time by Carlo Rovelli. It's still warping our minds like time and space. This is The surprise episode when I forgot to tell Jeremy our special guest was a quantum physicist! And we still aren't sure what quantum gravity is.
What role does quantum gravity play in time? Are they the same thing? What is granularity, and why does it mean time doesn't flow? Hell yeah! What's Planck length? Why does it matter... Superposition of electrons, fine... but superposition of time? The past present and future are just probabilities? WTF?
Please enjoy the show as much as we did.

This week we speak with Ciaran Murray about media and journalism, why it's broken and how web3 and blockchain technology to bring truth and trust back to your news feed.
Ciaran is a seasoned veteran of the blockchain industry, advising on numerous web3 projects and releasing a synthetics assets proof-of-concept last year. Ciarán previously worked in the media industry for British Sky Broadcasting. As such, he is well placed to understand the issues facing the media industry and how to apply blockchain and other distributed technologies to remedy them.
He is now the CEO of Olas Protocol. The Olas Foundation’s protocol seeks to harness the power of blockchain technology to make all non-private information freely available and to drive positive change in the media landscape.
Olas tackles the economic precarity facing media with the introduction of novel funding mechanisms and tackles the dissemination of disinformation through open but collusion-resistant review protocols, providing a viable alternative to traditional media.
“We are passionate about the preservation of high-quality journalism and scientific research, while increasing its availability to the public. The current media industry is facing a dire economic situation and is plagued with bias and a resultant lack of trust. Olas aims to minimise bias and return more value to content creators by removing hierarchical control of the media." - Ciaran Murray

Why are we reading Clear Thinking by Shane Parrish?
Some call the book a must read for intentional living and decision making. All we know is that in the quest for personal and professional growth and in the interests of the Nexus Thinkers, generalists and readers of Thinking On Paper, we know this book can change lives, careers, relationships and mindsets.

🧠 You'll Navigate Life with Intention: Oh those defaults! Be gone! The ego default, the social default, the inertia default and the emotion default. Clear thinking will help you recognise these biological defaults and give you the skills to override them.
🧠 You'll Enhance Decision-Making: What are you going to do with all this clear thinking? We’ll unpack the reality of better decision making at work, home and everywhere else you need to engage thinking before you jump head first into the fire.
🧠 You'll Override Your Mental Models: Parrish uses engaging narratives and stories to explain the mental models that hamper your progress, curtail your fun and put a million spanners in your works in progress! Recency bias, Action Bias, the Affect Heuristic, Ambiguity Effect, Anchoring Bias, Attentional Bias, Authority Bias, Availability Heuristic and the Bandwagon Effect. You’ll learn how to notice them and send them packing.
