Jurassic World: Rebirth For a franchise that started with a single book and then a begrudging sequel, the fact that we are now 7 Films, two sub-titles, two Netflix animated shows and numerous games deep, tells us a lot about the state of the entertainment industry... (rather than the quality of that first book.) We have moved past the Jurassic park, beyond even the Jurassic World... we are now living in a post Jurassic planet. M3gan 2.0 The B1tc# is B@ck is not the tagline for this movie... but it could very easily have been.  After the surprise hit that was the first M3gan, Blumhouse have done what they do best, and that is turn around a moderately budgeted sequel in a surprisingly quick time. Does this make for an excellent film that expands the original property and deepens the lore and background of the character?  No. Does is make for an energetic romp that features not one but two murderous cyborgs with dead, doll-like eyes, doing martial arts and ridiculous stunts?  Possibly. The Last 28 Years of Us The last 28 years (or there abouts) of zombie films have really changed the face of the genre. With the introduction of fast zombies, and then the addition of different zombie types; like Rage monsters, infected, fungus monsters, behemoths, clickers, alphas, etc... we have come a long way from the barely threatening shambling shufflers of yesteryear. We're not even confined to the big screen any more, with Zombies being perfect fodder for prestige TV, as well as cinema screens. Andor and Rogue One 9 Years ago (BBY?) Rogue One was released and a lot of people enjoyed the darker, more serious take on the Star Wars universe. However it felt like an outlier, and for many it didn't fit in with everything else in that galaxy Far Far away. 3 years ago Andor was released. It was show many thought was unnecessary, exploring the backstory of a secondary character many hadn't really embraced. "nobody asked for this" was a regular comment. Oh how that attitude was to change upon it's release! Today, the two seasons of Andor are a high water-mark for not just Star Wars, but TV dramas in general. And they way that they have re-contextualised Rogue One is nothing short of revalatory. In this podcast we look back at the two seasons of the show, and then dig down looking for the deep substrate foliated calcite at the heart of these shows and movies. Perfect Blue Ani-May continues on and this time we are looking back nearly 30 years to the classic psychological thriller that introduced the western world to the intricacies of Japanese Idol culture and unhealthy parasocial fandom in that sub-culture, all through the singular vision of the acclaimed director Satoshi Kon. Based loosely on the novel Perfect Blue: Complete Metamorphosis by writer Yoshikazu Takeuchi, this film explores the trauma of sexual assault, the fear and uncertainty of dealing with stalkers, and the existential dread that comes from gaslighting and potential mental collapse from an unravelling reality. It is a far cry from the usual anime of the same time period and it remains as topical and relevant today as it was in 1997. Dion made the call for us to watch this, as he wanted a classic piece of Anime, what none of us were really prepared for was the uncompromising film that we watched. Jill was far more up to speed on the content and style while Quinny thought he'd seen it and then realised he probably hadn't. All of them had a lot to process from this episode. A Minecraft Movie, A Working Man and A More! 16 years ago in 2009 a game developer called Markus "Notch" Persson started seeing blocks in a game called Infiniminer... this sparked his imagination and he began to create blocks everywhere... everything in blocky shapes. simple colours and perfectly cuboid construction pieces. Guilty Viewing Omissions We have hit a milestone that we never expected to achieve; 400 shows! thats a LOT of podcasting folks, a metric tonne of it in fact! So how do we choose to celebrate this momentous achievement? We watched our guiltiest cinema sins! The Electric State Simon Stålenhag may not be a household name, but his incredibly distinctive art has inspired hundreds of thousands of people all around the world. His books, "Tales from the Loop", "Labyrinth", "Things from the Flood" and "Sunset at Zero Point" as well as the novel basis for this film "The Electric State" have garnered a passionate fanbase and one of these books has already been loosely adapted into the @amazonprime series “Tales from the Loop”. That brings us to this new big budget Netflix adaptation of The Electric State, from Avengers: Endgame directors The Russo Brothers. Loosely based on the graphic novel, the film takes place in a reimagined version of 1997. Humans are isolated in their VR helmets in the wake of a global war against the robots, and around them the world is on the cusp of a complete technological meltdown. Amidst this dystopian setting a teenage girl named Michelle and a robot travel the U.S in search of answers to questions that may save her brothers life... Is the combination of @milliebobbybrown, @prattprattpratt and the @therussobrothers going to bring this story to enjoyable life? Or will it be a lifeless remote controlled robotic shell? Mickey 17 The novel this film was based on; Mickey 7 was being written by Edward Ashton, at almost exactly same time as the film back in 2021. Director Bong Joon Ho saw an opportunity and ran with it to create something pertinent, meaningful and as always, very weird... What remains then to answer is why the film version has solidly 10 more Mickeys!? Why do we need SO many more Mickeys? Robert Pattinson is Mickey 1-17 and in fact Mickey 18 as well... and his life...lives are the subject of this funny, poignant and occasionally silly film Science Fiction film. 97th Academy Awards Recap The 2025 Awards season has closed out, much the same way that liberty has died; with thunderous applause and too much Timothee Chalomet.
