This gripping two-part series follows Vincent Marks, a young man once respected in his RAF career. With limited opportunities for advancement, he leaves to seek stability in civilian life, joining the Prison Service.
But prison life isn't what he imagined. Isolated from colleagues and drawn toward prisoners, Vincent makes choices that lead to his downfall — he’s arrested, charged, and ultimately imprisoned himself. The story delves into themes of coercion, manipulation, and vulnerability, exploring how someone once held in high regard becomes a convicted prisoner.

Welcome to our 10th case - The Murder of WPC Yvonne Fletcher. This is episode number 2. If you haven't heard the first episode yet, please take a listen here: [Episode1]
Our pre-season episode is here: https://pod.fo/e/24428f
On 17th April 1984, a number of the Metropolitan Police officers were on duty in St James Square, London. At that time the Libyan Embassy occupied No 5. The officers were to police a demonstration which consisted of supporters and dissenters of Colonel Gaddafi, the Libyan leader.
It was at 10.18 that gunfire was discharged from the first floor windows of No 5 St James Square. Many anti Gaddafi demonstrators were hit and injured. One of the officers, Yvonne Fletcher, was also shot and fell to the ground. She was immediately tended to by the officers around her and then removed from the danger. Standing next to Yvonne that day was her friend and colleague, PC John Murray. John accompanied Yvonne to hospital, he made a promise that he would bring those responsible to justice. Yvonne died shortly afterwards.
John Murray has worked and campaigned tirelessly since that fateful day to keep the promise he made to his fallen friend. We intend to release a series later this year telling the story of what led to Yvonne’s death and what has happened in the years since. It has been described as a story of ‘espionage, betrayal, terrorism and corruption’.
However, John invited us to attend the 40th Anniversary Memorial for Yvonne. It was a well attended event on a sunny spring morning on the street where Yvonne fell 40 years earlier. This short ‘pre episode’ was recorded minutes before and after that memorial service with some of her colleagues.

This is a very sad and tragic story about two women who were very good, long-term friends.
They enjoyed a well-respected place within the community in which they lived. In November 1979 they were at the home of one of the friend's recently deceased mother, a detached property in the green countryside of northwest England.
There was a knock at the door. Evil was about to pay a visit.
Hours later their naked, lifeless bodies were found. But who had committed such cruel crimes and why?
You'll find out all the answers during this series of 2 podcasts.

Eventually Tony is released to the UK but the police are on to him, he is once again the subject of police surveillance. He goes to ground, he puts together a gang of ‘misfits’, a prison governor, a boxer, a banker and others. But the police have set up an operation to catch Tony and his accomplices.
The story is familiar, but how does it all end? Is there an inevitability to it? A well respected barrister who defended Tony at some of his trials gives his thoughts on the man that he knew, a rare insight into the professional relationship that a lawyer and client have.
The story has been told in these episodes, largely by Jason, Tony’s youngest son, the author of ‘The Old Man and Me’. But what does he make of the life his father lived? How has the family been affected by Tony’s criminality? And what can he now do to help the forgotten children of those people who commit crime and are incarcerated as a result.

By now he is in the Netherlands. He’s been inside for a long time and his trusted workers have either given up on a life of crime or have made their money and scarpered. So he is dealing with those he knows less well and whose ‘work’ ethics are different, harsher, more brutal. There’s a shoot out. Tony takes a bullet to the chest and a drug rival lies dead. He fights for his life.
During his period of recovery, Tony sets up again in Spain and for a few years he sends drugs from Morocco and the continent into the UK using boats and lorries to convey the products.
But the past has a way of catching up. He’s extradited for the death of the drug rival. What’s the verdict?

Whilst serving his prison sentence, he is the model prisoner and as he readies himself for release he indulges in the prison’s art classes. Is he turning a corner? Is this a new career path? Of course not, it's his next adventure, counterfeiting millions of American dollars and he uses the art as a guise for perfecting the production of cash notes.
Within months of release Tony’s on the run from the Police. He meets Crystal and deceives her with his charm and lies. After capture, trial and conviction he is handed a lengthy prison sentence but Crystal remains loyal until he embarks on his plan for release - drugs. She cannot expose her family to this criminality and the marriage that was conducted within the prison walls ends in divorce.
The drugs business leads him to another trial but his charm is not lost on the jury. After acquittal he drinks with them and suspicions arise that the jury has been ‘nobbled’.

Listen to the early years of Tony Spencer’s life.
A young man finding his way in the world but crime plays a part. He meets Jane, they are just teenagers when they marry and she falls pregnant with their first child. But Tony’s criminality sees him sent to Borstal. Over the next few years their family grows but Tony’s is still involved in criminality. He builds an empire of second hand shops and gymnasiums, this is legitimate business and delivers a level of success. But then he needs crime to support the businesses.
Tony turns to the one thing he thinks will bring him the cash injection he needs to keep his businesses afloat; crime. He robs a bank at gunpoint. The consequences of his actions are grave, 10 years imprisonment. Whilst Tony and Jane spin a story that Dad is at ‘college’ to protect their young children, the truth is it’s a strain on the relationship.
