Laurence Bouchard is a Tokyo based street photographer. Originally from the UK, Laurence moved to Tokyo in 2009 and this sealed his interest in photography forever as he navigated (and attempted to understand) this exciting, vibrant and eccentric new culture. Initially he was using just his iPhone for photography which led to Apple selecting him to represent Tokyo for their iPhone 7 campaign in 2017. After the iPhone 7 campaign Laurence invested in a Sony digital camera and now continues to shoot with both cameras interchangeably - continually adapting himself to new technologies and techniques that push forward his art in a way to escape the real world and exist in the moment. For Laurence, street photography is almost akin to playing a sport on one hand whilst meditating on the other. Many sports demand the ability to 'read' the game as a crucial skill and it’s the same in street photography. Over the last few years Laurence has been particularly drawn to the abstract and surreal and his attempts to interpret and express this perspective have galvanized Laurence’s focus on geometry in urban environments. Like many other photographers, Gaetan Cormier was introduced to photography at a very young age. He remembers using his mother's Kodak Instamatic. It was magical for him! In the early 90s, Gaetan got his hands on his first camera, the Pentax K1000. At a time when the Internet was not yet a thing, he enrolled in a home photography course offered by the Seattle Filmworks Photography School, which provided him with the necessary tools to learn the basics of photography. Around 2005, he acquired his very first digital camera. Being an active storm chaser at that time, he spent most of his time photographing storm structures and landscapes. In 2008, he discovered a passion for portrait/model photography. In 2012, tired of digital photography, Gaetan decided it would be interesting to go back to using film, which he did occasionally and exclusively switched to analog photography in 2013/2014. He uses 35mm to large format cameras. To see more of Gaetan's work, you can visit his Instagram and website by clicking on the links below... Anton Kartavykh was born in Ukraine (when it was still part of the Soviet Union) and moved to Germany with his parents when he was nine. He grew up in both worlds, which makes up part of his vision of the world today and try's to reflect some of this in his work. At approximately 25 years of age, he accidentally fell in love with analog photography and found great inspiration in the work of the masters like Henri Cartier-Bresson, Garry Winogrand, Martin Parr and many others. Over the years he developed his own style of street photography which leans towards the classics of the genre. To this day he predominantly works in black and white adopting a hybrid analog process, developing and scanning his films at home. Steve Walker was born and raised in the north-east of England but has lived in Liverpool in the north-west for more than a decade, where he works as a journalist, photographer and semi-full-time grandfather. He studied photography at college in the 1980s, using black and white film, then started shooting street photography in his fifties. Steve’s work centers around people, either candidly or in abstract, aiming to capture dynamic but everyday scenes to portray the art in the ordinary lives of ordinary people. He is often asked to shoot events and venues professionally by clients who ask him to replicate the same look and feel as his street photographs and has seen his work feature in a number of niche street photography publications. Abdelatif Ouarzi has always appreciated visual arts, for as long as he can remember. He started photographing around 5 years ago. He first focused on landscapes and empty streets. Human presence was okay for him at that time, but it was just a minor detail. Then he got interested in street photography and started considering people with a whole new point of view. He also enjoys working with children in his neighborhood as it provides him a lot of joy. One thing he knows now is that he wants to show all the aspects of life around him with no exception. In this episode, I have the great pleasure to speak with Paulo Moreira who was born and raised in Porto (the city of Port Wine), in Portugal. There, he studied foreign languages and literature. He also studied photography at a professional level, becoming a certified photography teacher. Paulo´s work is about street photography, strictly in black and white, all about geometry and the moment. His images are rooted in the classical philosophy of the most iconic representatives of the genre, mostly the European photographers that brought candid and street photography to the world. About 50% of Paulo’s images are still captured on film, a medium that he will never abandon. By choice, Paulo has never accepted to exhibit his work or to publish it. There are, however, a few videos on YouTube that show part of his work. He currently works together with a prestigious name in the camera industry to help photographers to find the way in their photographic journey. In this episode I have the great pleasure to speak with Ryan Orebaugh who was born in Columbus, Ohio and moved around a lot as a kid eventually landing in Savannah, Georgia to study advertising and branding at the Savannah College of Art and Design. At SCAD he picked up photography from his freshman roommate and has never looked back! Ryan’s work focuses on the art of seeing the interesting in the mundane or as Trill Magazine put it, “photos capturing the simplicity of Everyday American life”. After honing his craft on the streets of Savannah and Atlanta, Ryan moved to Dallas, Texas where he currently lives and works as an art director and commercial photographer. In this episode, I have the great pleasure to speak with the very talented Yulius Santoso who was born and raised in Surabaya, Indonesia. He has previously lived and worked in Japan, China, Malaysia, and Singapore. He is currently based in Sydney, Australia. Yulius runs a consulting business and also teaches at The University of New South Wales. Like many photographers, Yulius initially took up photography with his iPhone.  It was the desire to capture the essence of daily life and to deliver photo of the day images - one photo each day, without fail. Yulius is inspired by street photography greats such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and the desire of capturing a decisive moment. Yulius is the Founder of the Sydney Charity Photowalk, a grassroots movement for the local community of photographers to come together and raise funds for worthwhile causes. In 2023, the group raised just over $6500 for The Sydney Children's Hospital. Approximately 150 photographers attended, and the next photo walk is scheduled for Feb. 2024. In this episode, I am having a fantastic conversation with Steve Hooker, a street photographer out of the United Kingdom. Steve would like to think he has been a street photographer for the last seven years, except that would not be true. The signs were there from his late teens when he received his first film SLR camera. Steve disliked family and friends posing or smiling when he pointed the camera at them. Steve liked to capture them going about their daily business and pretend his was not there. The film director Francis Coppola said it best in his brief cameo in "Apocalypse Now" as a director. He shouted at the Marines: "Don’t look at the camera, don’t look at the camera. Just go by like your fighting." By the late 1980s, Steve started to photograph London’s workers on a small Russian film camera he still wished he had. The lack of confidence kept Steve and his camera off the streets however he did see street photography images that he did not take. Not sure where that confidence came from decades later; maybe age, maybe the desire to record contemporary daily history eventually overtook Steve and he went on a photographic journey. Nowadays Steve NEVER leaves the house without his camera. When its needed, the camera is always available! Steve's philosophy is best encapsulated by this quote by the actor Steve McQueen, "Everything before and after, is just waiting."
