Today's pod is a bit chaotic. With Monty on holidays, Gaff meets up with professional wrestler Mercer to fill the void. This episode is filled with a lot of dark humour.Sting's last match is coming up, and Mercer & Gaff discuss how to end it. There's also extreme excitement around Takeshita vs Ospreay.Mercer goes off the deep end and takes over a portion of the podcast, as we consistently circle back to speaking about the TV shows 'Home and Away' and 'Neighbours' for absolutely no reason.
The star of the week is Rhea Ripley, who adoringly got to walk out to a thunderous reaction on her home turf in Australia for Elimination Chamber. Unfortunately for fans in attendance, her opponent was Nia Jax. Monty has thoughts, to put it mildly.Bryan Danielson's last run is going to be 'epic' according to the man himself, and Gaff has a theory as to what his final run might look like.New Japan had a mental breakdown and completely shook up almost all of their major titles. Causing a huge ripple effect down the card post-Ospreay and Okada. We talk about Drew McIntyre, AJ Styles falling off the edge of the earth, The Rock vs Cody Rhodes, Sheamus calling me fat when I was 8 years old, and much more.
When it comes to death-defying stunts, nobody wants to be listed in that category more than Sammy Guevara. Gaff poses the question to Monty... is Guevara a dangerous worker, or a victim by happenstance? The Rock is a full-blown heel, which Gaff feels like is a long time coming. Monty feels like we're way past this... and he's technically not wrong. Gaff wonders why they've done things this way. There's talk about Ospreay, Michael Oku, Tony Khan & RevPro; Gunter's Mania plans, Lesnar's exclusion, CM Punk being booed at UFC, AEW's packed title picture, bisexual Undertaker, and the fact that there's two wrestling PPVs/PLEs over the next two weeks - which feel not-very-big-time for some reason.
On the back of wrestling's most explosive story, WWE held their annual Royal Rumble and to the delight of fans... Cody Rhodes won! And we all lived happily ever after.Unfortunately, that's hyperbole, as the Rumble event itself was marred by the accusations against Vince McMahon and the WWE as a company.CM Punk tore his tricep, Roman Reigns buried Seth Rollins, Cody Rhodes went through a mental breakdown, and The Rock inserted himself into the world title picture. Is all of this one big distraction tactic?
Gaff kicks off today's pod with the surprising news that Kazuchika Okada is leaving New Japan Pro-Wrestling. Monty doesn't think it's as important as Gaff does, and mid conversation there's a realisation that we opened with the wrong topic.Monty gives his opinions for the Royal Rumble and which way he thinks it'll swing. Gaff gives his but only half of his opinion lines up with Montys.Tyler Bate, Gunther and Pete Dunne get love as per usual, Roman Reigns discourse once again, and Gaff goes on a tangent about Irish wrestling talent.
This was recorded on Monday and being posted late... but hey, life happens and Monty is in Barcelona. Another episode is out on Tuesday!Gaff has beef to discuss and settle with a wrestling apparel brand, when all he wanted to do was give honest feedback as a customer. Griff Garrison has returned from his... sabbatical? And the first thing he did was put in a good shift against Adam Copeland, who could be his father.Monty leads the way in talking about WrestleMania and how he thinks things will go, and has the most logical booking suggestions. Gaff decides to go out of his way to be awkward with his booking, choosing outlandish winners that don't have any basis.Tyler Bate debuted on SmackDown & we're both very happy, the House of Black are still spooky, and a bunch more.
There are serious allegations that have been levied at Chris Jericho regarding his conduct in 2019. Gaff & Monty discuss this and how Tony Khan reacted to being asked questions about it.MJF wrote an in-depth article for Players Tribune where he talks about the landscape of professional wrestling, his love for AEW, and how seriously hurt he is legitimately. Gaff was intrigued by this and wanted to kick off the pod with it.Speaking of MJF... he lost his AEW World Championship at AEW Worlds End last Saturday, which sets up the 406-day record-setting former champion for a lengthy spell on the sidelines. This is despite the fact that we got the long-awaited Devil reveal at the end of the show. There's also Adam Cole, AJ Styles, Kenny Omega, Kevin Dunne and The Rock talk.
Jay White, Kenny Omega, AJ Styles and Finn Balor have one thing in common... and it's that they're all better than David Finlay to the point where The Miz was used for comparison. CM Punk is on the mind again - as usual - and NXT Deadline happened this weekend with some phenomenal wrestling on display. Mike breaks down what makes the Iron Survivor Match so incredibly impressive to watch. Bullet Club vs Bullet Club Gold is on the mind, Lexis King is horrible, the Continental Classic is class, Randy Orton is paying in advance, and Gaff goes on a few rambles.
CM Punk - a name synonymous with controversy, intrigue and universal love & hate. Gaff does his best to sum up the situation and sets out a stark reminder that trouble generally follows the Best in the World.Mike made his professional ring boy debut, and got thrown from buckle to buckle for his troubles. Under the moniker 'Monty' - Mike breaks down his spot debut in the ring.Cash Wheeler still has a gun, Randy Orton is probably juiced, Mike is sad about the lack of Bang Bang Belts, WWE stars are old as hell, and Matt Hardy's dragging his brother Jeff's unconscious body into Tony Khan's office to demand a title shot.
