Welcome to Episode 1695 on another episode of “On The Road Edition”, hosted by Stevie Kim. Today we are bringing you a throwback to Stevie’s conversation series “Wonderful Women in Wine” recorded on instalive during the pandemic. In this episode Stevie sits down with Maggie Henriquez.
More about today’s winery
The House was established in Reims in 1843, by Joseph Krug, a visionary non-conformist with an uncompromising philosophy. Having understood that the true essence of Champagne is pleasure itself, his dream was to craft the very best Champagne he could offer, every single year, regardless of annual variations in climate. Paying close attention to the vineyard’s character, respecting the individuality of each plot and its wine, as well as building an extensive library of reserve wines from many different years allowed Joseph Krug to fulfil his dream.
With a very original approach to Champagne making, he decided to go beyond the notion of vintage to create the most generous expression of Champagne, every year. Thus, he founded a House in which all Champagnes are of the same level of distinction.
Six generations of the Krug family have perpetuated this dream, enriching the founder’s vision and savoir faire.

The Italian Wine Podcast is a storytelling project dedicated to the Italian wine world; new episodes are published each weekday so stay tuned!
Italy has more native grape varieties concentrated within its borders than any other country in the world, and Italian wine and grape diversity is a story worth telling. Meanwhile, the popularity of Italian wine continues to grow on an international scale. This increasing appreciation most likely comes from the close link between wine and Italian culture. Wine is central to Italian cuisine, lifestyle, and agriculture. It has even shaped the very landscape of Italy.

Amongst other things, the conversion covers Susan’s career in wine writing, her early experiences as a winemaker in Australia, and rediscovering the hidden gems of Italian wine writing.
On the bookshelf:
The books discussed in today’s show include:
Our Evenings by Alan Hollinghurst
Caledonia Road by Andrew O’Hagan
Mayflies by Andrew O’Hagan
Taste the limestone, smell the slate by Professor Alex Maltman

About today’s guest:
Susan Keevil is the Editorial Director of the Académie du Vin Library, the London-based wine publisher founded by Steven Spurrier in 2018. Passionate about wine literature, she takes pride in curating high-quality books, particularly her acclaimed anthology series, which showcases the world’s finest wine regions through the voices of both modern experts and historical writers. Under her direction, the Académie du Vin Library has published works by renowned figures such as Hugh Johnson, Andrew Jefford, Jane Anson, Kelli White, Oz Clarke, Michael Broadbent, Fiona Morrison, and Steven Spurrier himself—though she admits it's impossible to pick a favorite.
A former Editor of Decanter magazine, Susan has a deep love for wine and travel (though she feels she hasn't done nearly enough of either!). Outside of publishing, she juggles life on a smallholding, caring for three student-aged children, two mischievous Labradors, nine chickens, and 22 Jacob sheep—the latter expecting lambs next month, ensuring an especially busy season ahead.

Welcome to Episode 1362, in which Cynthia Chaplin interviews Marco Nordio in this installment of Voices, on the Italian Wine Podcast.
About today’s guest:
Sapori D’Italia Import was born from the passion of Adriana Betioli and Marco Nordio.
Marco has studied Viticulture at the Wine Science course of the Auckland University and he set up a small vineyard in his property where he is currently producing Nebbiolo and Pinot Grigio grapes. His passion for Italian wine is part of his family history as his father used to introduce him to the rituals of food and wine matching since an early age.
Adriana is originally from Brazil with a great passion for food and wine. She attended several cooking courses in different parts of the world. She is very involved in the selection and the marketing of the items that Sapori imports.
Anna Ward has recently joined our team and we very proud of having her with us:
Anna’s interest in wine arose at a young age from her Grandfather, who made wine for his family and friends. She has been making wine in both New Zealand and overseas for many years now. Her passion for Italy and its wines arose from time spent making wine in Italy, and continues to be fuelled by her ongoing winemaking sojourns to Italy.

Welcome to Episode 2484 of the Italian Wine Podcast and Everybody Needs a Bit of Scienza, where Professor Attilio Scienza takes questions from the international wine community and answers them in his own inimitable way! These episodes are generally in Italian.
Today’s question comes from Noah Carrenca.
Today’s question(s):
🇬🇧 Resistant grape varieties (PIWI) are gaining ground: do you see them as a necessary step toward the future, or a genetic shortcut that might flatten and oversimplify European viticulture?
🇮🇹 Le varietà resistenti (PIWI) stanno prendendo piede: le vedi come un passo necessario verso il futuro o scorciatoie genetiche che rischiano di appiattire e semplificare la viticoltura europea?
More about Professor Scienza:
Professor Attilio Scienza is the one who checks all the facts and regulates when we mistakenly type “Verdicchio” instead of “Vermentino.” He is a full professor at the University of Milan in the Department of Agricultural and Food Sciences where he teaches courses on genetic improvements to the vine; he also teaches Viticulture in the Master’s program of the University of Turin in Asti.
He has been the lead for many national research projects in the field of physiology, agricultural techniques, and vine genetics. As the author of over 350 publications on vine and viticulture in national and international journals, you can bet he knows his stuff!

More about the guest:
Montevetrano winery is famous for its high-quality, cult-following red wine of the same name, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Aglianico grapes, often called the "Sassicaia of the South". Welcome to Episode 2479 of the Italian Wine Podcast. In this episode of On the Road Edition, Stevie Kim is the guest of Francesco Marone Cinzano at the Col d'Orcia winery.
In this open and enlightening conversation, Francesco Marone Cinzano and his son Santiago sit down with Stevie Kim for a deep dive into the history, philosophy and geography behind the Col d'Orcia estate.
Amongst the topics discussed today are the estate's production values and capacity, its commitment to organic farming, growing up on a remote vineyard in Chile, the challenges currently facing the sector, and, of course, the estate's "obsession" with nature. Finally, some mouth-watering pairing ideas!
More about today’s guest:
Count Francesco Marone Cinzano is an Italian businessman, renowned wine personality, and owner of Col d’Orcia, one of Montalcino’s most historic estates. The name Col d’Orcia means “the hill overlooking the Orcia River,” a nod to its prime location on the southern slopes of Montalcino, at the heart of the Brunello di Montalcino appellation.
Under Count Cinzano’s leadership, Col d’Orcia has become a global benchmark for Brunello while pioneering sustainability. Since 2010, the entire estate, including 350 acres of vineyards within a property of over 1,300 acres, has been farmed organically, making Col d’Orcia the largest certified organic estate in Tuscany. The winery is also Equalitas Sustainable Winery certified and has incorporated biodynamic practices, reflecting a deep respect for terroir and environmental stewardship.
Dedicated primarily to Sangiovese, Col d’Orcia produces elegant, age-worthy wines that embody both tradition and innovation, while research collaborations with institutions such as the University of Florence continue to push boundaries in vineyard sustainability and soil health.
