👉ArticleFrom America to Italy to South Korea, birthrates have been decreasing in many countries around the world. Since 2005, Japan has been doing international surveys every five years to try to learn what it can do to raise its own low birth rate. The most recent survey was done between October 2020 and January 2021. It included a total of about 4,400 people aged 20 to 49 in Japan, France, Germany and Sweden. People were asked if they thought it was easy to have and raise children in their country. In Japan, only 4.4% of people said it was "very easy" to have and raise children there. This compared to 25.5% in France, 26.5% in Germany and 80.4% in Sweden. Just 2.1% of people in Sweden said it was "very" or "somewhat" difficult to have and raise children there. But in Japan that figure was 61.1% — and this number has been rising over the last 10 years. When people were asked why they think it is easy to raise children in Japan, the top reason given was that the country is safe. In France and Germany, the top reason was good child care. But in Sweden, the top reason for it being easy to have children was support for education costs. Good income security while taking time off to care for children was a close second.

👉ArticleAccording to Statista, by 2021 there were over 3.2 billion video game players in the world. And both the video game industry and its players have developed many abbreviations for talking about gaming. An "RPG" is a "role-playing game," or a game where the player controls one or more characters that go on a quest, getting more powerful as the story continues. The world's top-selling RPG series is Pokémon, with over 380 million games sold. Before video games went online, people could usually only play in pairs or maybe up to four or sometimes six players. But today, gamers can enjoy "MMOs" — "massively multiplayer online" games that let many people play the same game at once. Popular MMOs include Fortnite and League of Legends, both of which are "F2P," or "free to play." F2P players can enjoy the basic game, but may have to pay for things like better weapons or nicer character designs. "GG" means "good game," and is often written at the end of online games. Like a handshake, typing "GG" shows that you had fun and thought the other players did great too.

👉ArticleAt 5,895 meters tall, Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania isn't just the tallest mountain in Africa. It's also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, which means it's the tallest mountain that isn't part of a mountain range. It's actually a volcano, and it has three cones. Two of the cones are extinct, but one could erupt again — although it hasn't erupted for 360,000 years. Mount Kilimanjaro is so tall that there's always snow on the top. However, some scientists think all the snow could melt as Earth gets warmer. In 1973, the mountain and the forests around it all became part of Kilimanjaro National Park to try to protect the area. In 1889, German geologist Hans Meyer, Austrian climber Ludwig Purtscheller and their guide Yohani Kinyala Lauwo became the first people to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Now about 30,000 people climb the mountain every year. It's thought of as the easiest of the world's tallest mountains to climb because you don't need any special skills or climbing equipment. But that doesn't mean it's easy. About 30% to 50% of climbers fail to get to the top. All kinds of people have climbed Mount Kilimanjaro. American Anne Lorimor has the Guinness World Record for being the oldest person to climb it. In 2019, she got to the top aged 89.

👉ArticleCelebrities may live exciting lives, but sometimes we're reminded that they have bad days too. Hollywood actor Tom Cruise had a very bad day recently: he was filming a new movie in the UK when his car was stolen. The actor was in Birmingham to film the seventh Mission: Impossible movie when his $130,000 BMW X7 was stolen while it was parked outside the Grand Hotel Birmingham. Several thousand dollars of luggage was also in the car when it was stolen. Like something from the Mission: Impossible films, it's believed that the car was stolen by copying the signal from its electronic key. Cruise was lucky, though: police were able to quickly find the car because it had a tracking device. However, everything inside the car was already gone. Cruise had already caused a lot of excitement in the UK before his car was stolen. The actor has been seen filming at Grand Central shopping center in Birmingham, and a few days earlier, his helicopter landed in a family's garden. The family did not know that Cruise would be in the helicopter, and were only told that a "VIP" needed somewhere to land because the nearby airport was closed. Cruise then let the family's children ride in the helicopter while he was in a meeting.

Neil ✨Article Music is everywhere in our lives, and everywhere in the English language! Here are some common expressions that use songs and singing in many different ways. If you buy or sell something "for a song," you do so for very little money. This expression was first used in writing in 1596, at a time when people singing in the street were given coins worth a very small amount by those walking past — so their songs weren't worth very much. To "make a song and dance" about something means to act as though it's more important than it really is. A "song and dance" is a type of show, so to act in this way is to behave like a performer. To have "a song in one's heart" means to be extremely happy. Throughout the history of the English language, the heart was often thought of as the part of the body that controls our emotions, and this is the meaning of the word that the expression uses. A "swan song" is the last action or activity in the career of a person or group, such as a musician or band. It comes from the ancient Greek belief that swans sing a song before they die. ✨Summary 如果你說「buy or sell something "for a song"」,就表示你用「非常便宜」的價格買或賣某個東西。 「To "make a song and dance" about something」,指對某件事「小題大作」。 「have a song in one's heart」的意思是極度開心。

For many people, a basic treehouse is still the way to go. Jim Brook, a 71-year-old grandfather from Colorado, said building a simple treehouse was a fun way to get his three grandsons to play outside. Nanci and Ethan Butler from Massachusetts built their own backyard treehouse too. However, theirs took three months, and is big enough for the Butlers and their two kids to sleep in. For those who don't want to build their own, treehouse rentals now have their own section on Airbnb. Places like the Mohicans Treehouse Resort in Ohio offer customers a chance to experience the outdoors but with modern amenities. The resort's nine treehouses are more like hotel rooms, with bathrooms, electricity and even air conditioning. Aaron Smith, who owns Treecraft Design-Build in Colorado, said business is booming. He said that there has been a big increase in people asking for backyard treehouses during the pandemic. The company's treehouses can be anything from basic structures costing about $10,000, to ones you could live in that cost half a million dollars. 一隻重達 36 公斤 的美洲獅, 竟然被人非法飼養在紐約市的公寓裡!🏙️😮 👉Article A 36-kilogram cougar has been removed from a New York City apartment where she was being kept illegally as a pet. The owner of the 11-month-old female cougar surrendered the animal, said Kelly Donithan of the Humane Society of the United States. The cougar, called Sasha, received vet care at the Bronx Zoo for a few days before being sent to the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge in Arkansas, officials said. Donithan said the removal showed how the exotic pet trade hurts animals and their owners, who often buy wild animals with the false belief that they will make good pets. She said Sasha was lucky because her owners understood that a wild cat couldn't live in an apartment and surrendered her. Basil Seggos of the Department of Environmental Conservation said that while cougars may look cute when young, they grow up to be very dangerous. "These animals often end up in very bad situations," said Bronx Zoo director Jim Breheny. He said that people don't have the resources or knowledge to look after the animals. Plus, he said they can be dangerous for the owner, the owner's family and the community.

🌍✨ 🐝 Article A Canadian man has created quite a buzz with his summer plans. Zach Choboter has rollerbladed more than 10,000 kilometers across Canada to raise awareness of the importance of bees to the environment — and also broke a world record along the way. The journey, which Choboter called Blading for Bees, began on May 25 in Whistler, British Columbia, and ended on August 23 in St. John's, Newfoundland, on Canada's east coast. The Blading for Bees website sold hats and T-shirts to help pay for the trip, and the group promises that any extra money will go to organizations that help bees. "Bees are such a good mascot for the environment," Choboter told CBC News. "If we help them, we help everything." Before starting, Choboter told Global News that he planned to travel 120-150 kilometers every day, allowing up to 14 days for breaks. His sister Rachel went on the journey with him, driving a support vehicle as he rollerbladed. However, the trip also included a crash that briefly put Choboter in the hospital not long after crossing the Rocky Mountains. When the brother and sister arrived in St. John's, they celebrated by jumping into the Atlantic Ocean. On Instagram, they wrote that Choboter had rollerbladed a total of 10,093 kilometers.

不只有麥當勞—— 今年稍早,俄亥俄州的 Burger King 也掛出標語: 🪧「Do you have a 14 or 15 year old? We will hire them!」 🌍Article A McDonald's in the US needs workers so badly that it's asking 14- and 15-year-olds to apply. The fast-food restaurant, which is in the city of Medford in southern Oregon, even put a sign out front saying, "Now hiring 14 & 15 year olds." After the easing of COVID-19 restrictions in the US, many restaurants and other businesses have not been able to find enough staff. Heather Coleman, who runs the restaurant, told Business Insider that in her family's 40-year history of managing different McDonald's, they've never seen such a shortage of employees. Coleman tried increasing the minimum wage to $15 an hour, but that didn't work. However, after welcoming the younger age group, she received 25 job applications in two weeks. Earlier this year, an Ohio Burger King also put up a sign that said, "Do you have a 14 or 15 year old? Do they need a job? We will hire them!" This caused a lot of debate on social media, with many people saying that instead of hiring younger people, the company should pay more or make working conditions better.
