Description

In the spirit of the last stanza of the Black National Anthem, we rise from the past, rooted deeply in the soil of ancestral struggles, to build a home, to claim our space. On Native Land Pod, Angela Rye, Bakari Sellers, and Andrew Gillum guide us through the political landscape, wielding insights and unapologetic analysis, unraveling the threads that connect Black Americans and marginalized communities to a place they courageously call home.

In each episode, Angela, Bakari, and Andrew embark on a journey of reflection, taking stock of the news of the week and the country's road to the polls.

Join us each week as we navigate the dance between past and present, weaving a narrative of hope, empowerment, and the unyielding strength that defines the journey to reclaim 'Native Land.' This isn't just news analysis; it's a movement, a conversation, and a testament to the power of those who dare to rebuild and redefine the meaning of home.

Pastor Jamal Bryant had a first for his church last Valentines day, a joint sermon with his wife, Karri Bryant. Their advice from the stage is as hilarious as it is insightful; our hosts listen to clips and reflect on the sermon with the pastor himself, who shares what he’s learned about love in recent years, particularly after a certain dress-related controversy…   Join hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers for this segment from episode #119 that aired on 02-19-26   If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/   Welcome home y’all!    —--------- We want to hear from you! We don’t know WHO we’re voting for yet in 2028, but we do know WHAT we’re looking for.     On this week’s MiniPod, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers tell us what qualities they’d like to see in a 2028 Presidential nominee. On episode 119 of Native Land Pod, hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers team up with guest-host Dr. Reverend Jamal Bryant.    Pastor Bryant held a groundbreaking joint sermon recently with his wife, Karri Bryant, for Valentines day. They cracked jokes and shared their wisdom for how to make a relationship last, which we’ll pass on to you. Then Pastor Bryant holds space for us as we remember another reverend, Jesse Jackson, who passed away Tuesday, February 17th.    FOR YOUR SITUATIONAL AWARENESS:   Early voting sites are being removed from North Carolina Universities, disenfranchising Black students.   The SAVE Act heads to the Senate, the “Voter ID Law” threatens voting rights.    DHS Secretary Kristi Noem says DHS Will Help “Secure” Elections.    The Olympic Village has run out of the 10,000 condoms it supples to athletes.    Five Black surgeons lead the trauma unit at the prestigious Johns Hopkins hospital for the first time.    We dedicate the majority of our show today to Reverend Jesse Jackson. Reverend Jackson had a knack for showing up wherever Black folks were organizing; he showed up for our hosts multiple times to offer his support and mentorship. We’ll hear their personal stories about the reverend and more from his fabled life: Reverend Jackson grew up in poverty before rising through the church to carry on the work of MLK Jr., his mentor. He ran for president in the 80’s (which set the stage for Obama), championed progressive causes that were far ahead of his time, and created broad political alliances that last to this day. His impact cannot be overstated.    If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod.    We are 263 days away from the midterm elections. Host Bakari Sellers recaps Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl performance, the Puerto Rican singer gave a performance entirely in Spanish against the backdrop of a brutal deportation campaign occurring across the United States.    The Trump Administration has said from the start that deportations would target primarily violent criminals, and Trump himself frequently claims that they’re deporting “the worst of the worst.” The reality looks far different, as revealed in a report from the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees ICE.    AND Governor Wes Moore suggests that racism is the reason why he was singled out and uninvited to an annual meeting of governors at the White House.    Want to ask Bakari a question? What role have white evangelicals played in the current struggle against fascism? Once a political actor tasked with influencing SCOTUS to overturn Roe v. Wade, Reverend Schenck has since come to regret his involvement with the religious right, which he describes as a “cult.” He now calls himself a “dissenting Evangelical organizer.” Our hosts ask the reverend what brought him around.    Join hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers PLUS guest-host Tamika Mallory for this segment from episode #117 that aired 02-05-26     If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/   Welcome home y’all!    —--------- We want to hear from you! It’s widely believed that Bad Bunny will stage an anti-ICE protest during his halftime show at this year’s Super Bowl. The question is, how far will he go–will the performance itself be a protest, and what could that look like?    Our hosts discuss the NFL’s failure to meet its promises to diversify its coaching staff, and play an absolutely EPIC football-related political attack ad by the Georgia Democrats.     Join hosts Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers for this week’s MiniPod.    And of course we’ll hear from you! On this week’s SoloPod, Eddie “Papa” Rye joins his daughter to chat church protests and Super Bowl drama.    Two more have been arrested in connection to the Church protest in St. Paul, Minnesota, Jerome Richardson and Ian Austin. Meanwhile, we’ll play a clip from a different church protest that the Trump administration has completely ignored, probably because the protester was a white preacher spouting racism.    Speaking of ignorance, with the Super Bowl coming up this weekend, we’ll revisit a painful moment in NFL history for the Rye family (who are big Seahawk’s fans). The Seahawks are going to the Super Bowl, and the last time they were in the Super Bowl, they were ONE play away from glory when the unthinkable happened…    Want to ask Angela a question? Don Lemon covered this protest as a journalist and rightwing media is now calling him a criminal for it. That’s obviously bull sh*t but do WE think it’s OK to protest at church?? Our hosts debate…    24 members of Congress are 80 or older, and many of them are running for re-election. We’ve seen politicians on both sides of the aisle (Mitch McConnell, Diane Feinstein, Joe Biden, to name a few) who continue to work and hold senior positions when it’s CLEAR they are no longer fit. Should there be an age limit for Congress? How to we foster and recruit youth?    If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod.    We are 291 days away from the midterm elections. OMG! I'm screaming from Atlanta! I LOVE this podcast! I just paused my utube of this episode to comment. You are ALL brilliant! I am laughing at AR's VP pick, although I, too, love him! however, I agree 💯 with AG on his choice. The Pennsylvania pick. Strong contender for me. Off topic, Tiffany, I love your podcast! It's a great concept! Keep informing us on both platforms. Rosella (Atlanta)

I did not realize how I missed your voices. I was 4 minutes into the podcast when I knew that I had a new favorite one. Your transparency was jarring and appreciated. I can't wait for the next episode. Finally, I am really going to need you all to get through 2024 with my sanity intact. PEACE.
