Description

In the spirit of the last stanza of the Black National Anthem, we rise from the past, rooted deeply in the soil of ancestral struggles, to build a home, to claim our space. On Native Land Pod, Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross, Bakari Sellers, and Andrew Gillum guide us through the political landscape, wielding insights and unapologetic analysis, unraveling the threads that connect Black Americans and marginalized communities to a place they courageously call home.

In each episode, Angela, Tiffany, Bakari, and Andrew embark on a journey of reflection, taking stock of the news of the week and the country's road to the polls.

Join us each week as we navigate the dance between past and present, weaving a narrative of hope, empowerment, and the unyielding strength that defines the journey to reclaim 'Native Land.' This isn't just news analysis; it's a movement, a conversation, and a testament to the power of those who dare to rebuild and redefine the meaning of home.

On episode 107 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers are joined by renowned academic and multi-platform journalist, Marc Lamont Hill.    Marc Lamont Hill hosts UpFront for Aljazeera and is a co-host on The Joe Budden Podcast. He’s been a commentator for outlets from CNN to BET and has made remarks before the United Nations on the Israel-Palestine conflict. You can check out his work and support him at https://www.patreon.com/cw/MarcLamontHillOfficial   Nicki Minaj was at the U.N. calling for an end to targeted anti-Christian violence in parts of Africa. We’re happy she cares–and we wish she’d do a little more research, it’s not as if it’s ONLY Christians being targeted. Our hosts chat with Marc Lamont Hill about events on the continent.    Mamdani met with Trump in the Oval Office at the end of last week and had a rather chummy press conference with the president he repeatedly called a “fascist.” Our hosts have diverging opinions on the relevance and meaning of this moment, was this bad optics or cunning politics?    Rankin County jail guards filmed themselves mocking and torturing a Black inmate with intellectual disabilities, rewarding him with a coca-cola after electrocuting him for fun. Some incidents are so horrific we have to pause and ask: Why? What is the meaning of this?     NFL quarterback Shadeur Sanders started in his first NFL game last Sunday. The rookie already has a reputation for being cocky–even by the standards of professional sports players–and made some comments after the game that turned heads.   If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod.    We are 344 days away from the midterm elections. On episode 106 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers discuss...    President Trump has been under enormous pressure to release the Epstein Files.  Republicans–who wanted the files released under President Biden–are now twisting themselves into knots trying to protect Trump’s reputation. Democrats are also finding themselves mentioned more than they’d like in what’s been released thus far. As it turns out, proximity to power knows no partisan bounds. MAYBE having transparency into the crimes of the most infamous pedophile in modern history is good in-and-of itself and should never have been a partisan issue…   Trump’s DOJ never misses an opportunity to engage in more injustice with the latest being federal prosecutors pushing to release one of Breonna Taylor’s killers. Ben Shapiro and others are also advocating for the release of Derek Chauvin, the officer who murdered George Floyd. AND   Our guest today is the Attorney General of Massachusetts, Andrea Campbell. AG Campbell  has been a leader in the push back against the Trump administration having filed more than 40 lawsuits to halt some of their dangerous actions. She led a group of AG’s in a lawsuit to release SNAP funds during the shutdown, and she’s been fighting to preserve DEIA initiatives in MA schools, and protect immigrants here legally on Temporary Protected Status (TPS) who have been getting picked up by ICE.    There’s a push in several red states to allow pregnant women to park in handicapped spaces. Sounds fine, right? When we take a closer look we see a classic far-right strategy to pit one group against the other, in this case, the disabled community vs. women. Tiffany Cross walks us through the nuance.    And of course we’ll hear from you! Tanzanian President Samia won re-election on October 30th with an unbelievable 98% of the vote. The opposition has called the election results a “mockery of Democracy.   On this week’s SoloPod, a rigged election leads to social unrest and hundreds of protestors disappeared or killed.    Our guest is a local governance expert who was in Tanzania on election day working as a poll observer.  Elizabeth A. On episode 105 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers recap the end of the government shutdown.    Moderate Democrats in the Senate caved and passed a temporary budget without getting their demands met to continue funding health care subsidies. What the heck happened and what was the point of this record-breaking standoff that saw federal workers furloughed and the poorest Americans lose food assistance? It is not Democrats who “lost” the government shutdown, it is us, the American people, but it has made the Democrats look like losers.     MAGA is teeing up to rig the 2026 election. Reporter Ari Berman wrote an article this week about Trump's pardons for high-profile attorneys and others involved in his plot to overturn the 2020 election–but it’s not just about 2020. Ari’s reporting outlines what Trump’s likely path toward rigging 2026 will be, and the under-the-radar efforts by the Trump administration to fill the voting process with red tape (voter ID, ban voting machines, etc.), which Ari says the administration will use as a pre-text to claim that “millions of Americans voted illegally” in 2026.    Ari Berman is the national voting rights correspondent at Mother Jones. Read Ari’s article here: https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2025/11/trump-martin-fake-electors-pardon-2020/   And of course we’ll hear from you! On this week’s (somewhat) SoloPod, Angela Rye is joined by renowned political commentator on Native Land Pod, our very own Tiffany Cross, to talk about these BEEFS between Black media outlets and figures.    There are mysterious forces driving wedges between Black media figures who represent various factors of the Black community. We gotta have a meta conversation about what’s driving these beefs. For example, Roland Martin recently criticized Charlamagne for using his platform (The Breakfast Club) to call for an end to the government shutdown.    Are famous Black media figures obligated to strategize together for the good of the Black community?   Want to ask Angela a question? Host Angela Rye is joined on stage for a candid conversation with Vice President Kamala Harris!  This convo kicks off with a look back to election night 2024. VP Harris takes us through HER experience of that night and the days and weeks that followed.  They discuss some of the most controversial political issues that Kamala grappled on the campaign and afterward, like the war in Gaza, and how to confront fascism on-the-rise.  VP Harris' new political memoir, 107 days, goes deep into her historic run for president. On this week’s MiniPod, our hosts Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers are joined by Maurice Mitchell, the National Director of the Working Families Party for a conversation on breaking the two-party system and getting corporate (and AIPAC) money out of politics.    The WFP is a political party aimed at taking power from the rich and powerful, and putting it in the hands of the working class through a broad multi-racial coalition. They run their own candidates AND run candidates through Democratic Party primaries, candidates who have fought for higher wages, a fairer criminal justice system, getting big money out of politics, and more.    If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/   Welcome home y’all!    —--------- We want to hear from you! On episode 104 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers go through this week’s election results and take an account of how our Black candidates (and voters) performed.     The race for NYC’s mayor dominated the airwaves, where Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani won. BUT there were other important races. Black mayors were elected across the country, the governor race in Virginia and New Jersey went solidly Democratic, and State-level elections in the South saw typically conservative seats flip blue. Folks are wondering if Mamdani is the new “face of the Democratic party” which WE think is missing the point.    NLP is joined by President Biden’s former press secretary (the first Black woman to hold the job) Karine Jean-Pierre to discuss some of the election results and Democrat’s media strategy. In her new book, Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside Party Lines, Karine shares some pointed critiques of a party she no longer identifies with, and our hosts ask some pointed questions of Karine.    And our hosts respond to your questions! There’s an interesting one about infiltrating the Republican party and another from a chef asking who is keeping our legacy “recipes.”    If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod.    We are 362 days away from the midterm elections. On this episode hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, and Andrew Gillum answer YOUR questions at the AfroTech conference in Houston, Texas.    AfroTech is a hub for Black S.T.E.M professionals, innovators, entrepreneurs, & visionaries. It was founded in 2016 by Blavity Inc. and aims to inspire future Black leaders within the tech industry where Black professionals are significantly underrepresented. Black workers accounted for just 7.4 percent of the high-tech workforce and 5.7 percent of high-tech managers, despite making up nearly 12 percent of the total U.S. workforce, according to U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.    If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod.    Welcome home y’all!    —--------- We want to hear from you! On this week’s MiniPod of Native Land Pod, it’s a boys takeover. Andrew Gillum and Bakari Sellers discuss the recent spate of violence during homecoming weekend at our HBCUs.    There has been some hysterical reporting about violence around the Howard University and Lincoln University campuses. Surely, violence surrounding large gatherings at our HBCUs is a cause for concern, and we’ll talk about it. Also, there’s a (false) media trope about violence at HBCUs that media outlets are playing into, and our hosts are going to correct the record.    And of course we’ll hear from you! On episode 103 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers are TOGETHER at a studio in Houston, Texas.    Starting on November 1st, SNAP (food stamps) benefits will reportedly run out of funding, affecting more than 40 million Americans, or about 10% of the country. This despite the fact that the federal government could easily appropriate funds to continue the SNAP program through November. This is a result of the federal government shutdown which will soon be the longest shutdown in U.S. history.    This shutdown is doing damage to American’s faith in our own government. With Democrats poised to take control of the House in 2026, what responsibility will they have to restore the trust deficit?    And in the meantime, wtf do WE do?!? Our hosts discuss how to stand in the gap and support our communities even when the government won’t.    If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod.    We are 369 days away from the midterm elections. On this special SoloPod, Angela Rye and attorney A.B. Burns-Tucker (A.K.A. IAMLEGALLYHYPE) tackle California’s proposition 50, CA reparations measures, and answer YOUR questions.    This episode originally aired as an Instagram live stream on 10-23-25.    Proposition 50 seeks to redraw California’s electoral maps to give Democrats as many as 8 more seats in the U.S. Congress. It’s the only measure on the ballot for CA voters this November.    Recently, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a reparations bill to create a Bureau for Descendents of American Slavery in California. There were five other reparations bills put before the governor by the CA legislature that he vetoed. Angela criticized him for those vetoes and caught some flack online for it , she will respond to the haters.    If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/   Welcome home y’all!    —--------- We want to hear from you! The Perfect Neighbor debuted this month as the #1 film on Netflix, bringing attention to Stand Your Ground laws through the story of Ajike “AJ” Owens. AJ was killed in 2023 by her neighbor Susan Lorincz, a woman known throughout the neighborhood as “The Karen." This documentary, told through police bodycam footage of the confrontations leading up to the horrific murder, is part of a movement for social change.    On this MiniPod, our hosts Angela Rye, Tiffany Cross, and Andrew Gillum speak with the mother of Ajike Owens, Pamela Dias, and executive producer of the film, Takema Robinson. In honor of Ajike’s legacy, these two co-founded the Standing In The Gap Fund with a vision to transform grief into action and seek justice for those impacted by racial violence.    Florida’s first-in-the-nation Stand Your Ground law played a key role in Ajike’s murder. Her killer researched the law BEFORE shooting Ajike and using it as her legal defense. Ajike, Takema, and SO many others are seeking to overturn the law that’s disproportionately used to justify murdering members of the Black community.    If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/   Welcome home y’all! —--------- We want to hear from you! On episode 102 of Native Land Pod, hosts Tiffany Cross, Angela Rye, Andrew Gillum, and Bakari Sellers are joined by Charlamagne Tha God, host of The Breakfast Club, to talk about the controversy NLP stirred up with our “anti-intellectualism” episode last week. Our hosts also cover Trump’s grifting, a call for a general strike, and an update on threats to the Voting Rights Act.    Trump is seeking $230M in damages from his own Justice Department for investigations into him, the 2016 Russia-election-interference investigation and the investigation into his handling of classified documents. Is it likely that he’ll actually get this money?     The mayor of Chicago, Brandon Johnson, has called for a general strike to push back against the actions of the Trump administration. He is the highest ranking public official to do so. We’ll hear his call to action and ask: what does it realistically look like for us to withhold our labor en masse? Are we ready for that??    Charlamagne Tha God has some criticism for our NLP hosts regarding the segment we did on Marc Lamont Hill, Queenzflip, and the Joe Budden Podcast last week. Charlamagne’s criticism mirrors many of the comments we’ve received. Our hosts respond to the critiques!    A quick explainer on the threats to the Voting Rights Act, please check out the special episode we did last week…   If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: http://www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/ and send to @nativelandpod.    We are 376 days away from the midterm elections. Our MiniPod this week is inspired by one of your questions. Should we attend the No Kings protest? How do we maximize our political power through other methods besides voting?    We’ll hear some personal testimony from Andrew about what it means to folks like Letitia James and Lisa Cook, and all the folks being unjustly targeted by the Trump administration, about what it means to see folks protesting the same system that’s grinding them down.    If you’d like to submit a question, check out our tutorial video: www.instagram.com/reel/C5j_oBXLIg0/   Welcome home y’all!    —--------- We want to hear from you! Send us a video @nativelandpod and we may feature you on the podcast.    Instagram  X/Twitter Facebook NativeLandPod.com   Watch full episodes of Native Land Pod here on YouTube. OMG! I'm screaming from Atlanta! I LOVE this podcast! I just paused my utube of this episode to comment. You are ALL brilliant! I am laughing at AR's VP pick, although I, too, love him! however, I agree 💯 with AG on his choice. The Pennsylvania pick. Strong contender for me. Off topic, Tiffany, I love your podcast! It's a great concept! Keep informing us on both platforms. Rosella (Atlanta)

I am so happy that this podcast exists. Thank you for sharing the knowledge that is needed. I love that you also hold both parties accountable. Andrew, I love how you are so bold to publicly say, I'm human! I am a forever listener of you all individually and as a collaboration.

I did not realize how I missed your voices. I was 4 minutes into the podcast when I knew that I had a new favorite one. Your transparency was jarring and appreciated. I can't wait for the next episode. Finally, I am really going to need you all to get through 2024 with my sanity intact. PEACE.
