How much has your life changed in the last year? One year ago, I met Chase Wark and was struggling to find my rhythm with the podcast and with my projects. Fast forward a year and Chase is not only a friend but I work for him and he is my main sponsor for racing.
So after a wild few weeks of travel, I found myself in the Driftless region set to tackle The Hotdish, Chase's most Minnesotan race. I had great legs and was ready to roll but was faced with a decision just 6 miles into the race. This episode of the Bootleg Miles is as full as many swerves as the Hotdish course itself.

In this episode, I return to the Badlands Gravel Battle—the race that unknowingly changed the trajectory of my life back in 2018. That year, I arrived unknowingly battling Bipolar Disorder, and yet I found myself in a rare stretch of natural stability. I was fit, focused, and I won. But what came after the finish line would shape everything: Nick and Lindsay Ybarra encouraged me to take on the Maah Daah Hey 100. That one conversation became the spark that carried me through a storm I didn’t yet know was coming.
This vlog is about racing, yes—but it’s also about mental health, resilience, and the power of encouragement. As I race the 2025 edition of the Badlands Gravel Battle, I reflect on how that first race gave me a purpose when my life was falling apart. That memory became a lifeline through my diagnosis in 2020 and fueled the story I’m now telling through the film Back to the Start. Watch as I return to where it all began, chasing finish lines and healing in the North Dakota Badlands.

Two weeks ago at Granny’s Gravel Grinder, I received an incredible surprise: a brand new Lauf Seigla thanks to Chase Wark and Wark’s Cycling Services coming on board as a sponsor. But here's the twist... it took me a full week to actually ride the thing! In this episode of Bootleg Miles, I walk you through the process of modding and customizing my new gravel race bike — and why dialing in a ride when you're 6'4" is no small feat. From chain waxing to bar swaps to internal brake routing, this was more than a quick tune-up.
This pod isn’t just about building bikes — it’s about why the process matters. I share how wrenching helps my mental health, how I taught myself bike mechanics out of necessity, and how I finally brought White Lightning 2.0 to life. We also talk Silca sealant, tubeless setups, and why this is the nicest bike I’ve ever owned. If you’re a gear nerd, love behind-the-scenes storytelling, or just want to see how this bike came together before Badlands Gravel Battle, you’re in the right place.

What happens when you show up to race... but miss the start because you're filming the race director for a documentary? That’s exactly what went down at Granny’s Gravel Grinder, a Central Minnesota gravel race hosted by Chase Wark and Wark's Cycling Services. With over 400 riders across multiple distances, the event brought big community energy, rowdy midwestern grit, and hospitality only Chase can deliver. For JP — back in the gravel game for the first time in two years — it meant lining up Dead F**ing Last (DFL)* after capturing pre-race footage for his upcoming docu-series on Chase.
Despite the late start, the day turned into something far more meaningful. The post-race celebration held a surprise for JP: a brand-new Lauf Siegla and a sponsorship offer from Wark Cycling Services to support his storytelling work on The Stable Cyclist. This video captures the ride, the vibes, and how JP's work has shaped Chase's life over the past year. Whether you're here for gravel racing, cycling documentaries, or the power of people supporting people — this one’s for you.

In this episode of The Bootleg Miles, I’m finally telling the full story of my love for the Bonk Bros. But this is more than just fanboy appreciation. This is a story about the kindness of strangers, unsolicited support and finding your way back after everything falls apart.
In the midst of a massive mental health project in 2023, I had a devastating mountain bike crash and head injury sidelining me for over a year, I wasn’t sure if I’d ever ride again. But the guys in the Bonk Bros helped in the ways they could, and Adam Saban stuck with me. Now we’re working together to prepare for the Maah Daah Hey 100 and to finish that massive Mental Health Project—and this episode is a tribute to the people who never stopped believing. If you’ve ever struggled to get back up, or wondered if your story still matters, I hope this video reminds you that you are not alone. In this episode of Bootleg Miles, JP opens up about something far harder than finishing a grueling 100-mile mountain bike race: asking for help with his mental health. As a teacher, filmmaker, and endurance athlete living with Bipolar Disorder, JP reflects on the fears that held him back from getting help — and the life-changing shift that happened when he finally did. Filmed on the bike and from the heart, this ride dives deep into the raw, often unspoken challenges of living with mental illness.
Whether you're struggling yourself or supporting someone who is, this episode tackles real mental health conversations head-on — including how coaching, therapy, and community can make all the difference. If you're navigating anxiety, depression, or Bipolar Disorder, this story might be the nudge you need to ask for help. And if you're just here for a ride, trust us — this one goes way deeper than watts.

Welcome to the first episode of The Bootleg Miles. Where we'll all come along on the journey this year as I look to finish the 3rd film in the Maah Daah Hey Film Series.
This week, we'll start by looking back at the premiere tour for Maah Daah Hey: Together and the moment a room full of strangers became something much more.
From Knoxville, TN to Fargo, ND, we sat down and shared stories—about bikes, yes—but also about friendship. And in a time when we seem divided on everything, that shared space meant everything.
This series is brought to you by Wahoo. (www.wahoofitness.com)
🎬 *Back to the Start*, the next MDH film, begins production this summer.
🟡 Want to support the film? I'll share that information next week in our next episode.

After three months away taking care of other parts of our lives, Aaron and JP return to talk about what it was like to film this year's Maah Daah Hey 100. JP reveals the MDH Film Series he is working on as well as dropping some big news regarding his racing in the coming year. And then there is so much more! The podcast will return to an every other week format in the coming weeks with a fun interview with Gordon Wadsworth and Thomas Turner coming up in two weeks. Thanks for listening and remember you are loved!
Brendan Johnston is one of the most respected athletes in the LifeTime Grand Prix, but his story goes far deeper than race results. At just 17 years old, Brendan was diagnosed with testicular cancer — a moment that reshaped his life and left lasting psychological scars. In this episode, Brendan opens up about the PTSD that followed, the fear of recurrence, and the years he spent avoiding the emotional weight of that diagnosis while building a professional career in mountain biking and gravel racing.
We also dive into his Perth to Sydney ride across Australia — a massive endurance effort to raise awareness for men’s mental health while chasing an FKT. Brendan shares what it’s like balancing elite racing with fatherhood, living abroad while raising a daughter, and how he’s learning to speak openly about struggles many men keep buried. It’s a surprisingly light, honest conversation full of humor, depth, and perspective from one of the biggest names in the LifeTime Grand Prix.

Kerry Werner returns to the Stable Cyclist Podcast to talk about life after professional racing. In his last appearance, Kerry opened up about navigating major life transitions — a conversation that resonated deeply with listeners. This time, we dive into what it actually looks like on the other side of a pro career: shifting identity, redefining purpose, and finding meaning beyond the start line.
Kerry now works inside the sport in a new way, creating media content around race day while collaborating with Russell Finsterwald and The Black Bibs. We discuss the strange tension of covering the front of the race instead of being in it, the creative process behind storytelling in cycling, and where Kerry now draws his inspiration. As always, we wrap with Random Fire.

In this episode of The Stable Cyclist Podcast, Lifetime Grand Prix rider Zach Calton joins JP for an honest conversation about stepping away from professional cycling—and what it took to find his way back. Zach reflects on leaving the pro ranks to work full time, the pull that eventually brought him back to racing full time, and the difficult stretch that followed. From a brutal Cape Epic to a tough Unbound, Zach walks through a season that didn’t go to plan and how learning to laugh through the lows became part of the process.
The conversation centers on the turning point in June of 2025, when Zach hit the reset button, changed how he was approaching the sport, and went on a tear through the rest of the season—ultimately earning his way back into the Lifetime Grand Prix. We talk about what actually changed, how perspective reshaped performance, and what it means to rebuild confidence after public setbacks. The episode wraps with one of the most entertaining Random Fire segments yet, as Zach’s analytical sense of humor and easygoing vibe shine through.

In this episode of The Stable Cyclist Podcast, French-Canadian pro gravel racer Julien Gagné joins the show to talk about his path through the sport — from XCO mountain biking, to pro road racing, and ultimately to finding his place in gravel. Julien reflects on the process of reinvention that comes with changing disciplines, learning how to stay grounded while chasing big results, and what it’s taken to carve out a sustainable career in one of the most competitive eras of gravel racing.
We also dig into Julien’s breakout wins at Gravel Locos and CORE4, his move from privateer life with a local Canadian shop to joining Lunchbox Racing, and how he balances a naturally calm personality with the need to flip the switch when it’s time to race all-out. Along the way, Julien opens up about creativity, art, and why having an outlet away from the bike has become essential to both his happiness and performance — before wrapping things up with a classic round of Random Fire.

In this episode of The Stable Cyclist Podcast, Cécile Lejeune joins JP for an honest conversation about reinvention, resilience, and the long road to the Lifetime Grand Prix. Cécile reflects on her early years as an endurance runner, the college injury that forced her to step away from the sport, and how cycling slowly became a new outlet for competition and self-discovery. Rather than a straight line, her path into gravel racing was shaped by patience, curiosity, and a willingness to rebuild from the ground up.
The conversation goes deeper as Cécile opens up about athlete health, including disordered eating, RED-S, and the pressures that can arise when performance and identity become intertwined. We also explore her progression in gravel racing—from racing on a tight budget to earning a place with Trek Factory Racing for the 2026 season—and what that evolution has taught her about sustainability, confidence, and growth. As always, the episode wraps with Random Fire, offering a lighter glimpse into Cécile’s personality beyond the results.

#GravelWorlds #GravelCycling #CyclingNews
In this episode of The Stable Cyclist Podcast, JP sits down in person with professional gravel racer Chase Wark for a candid conversation about performance, health, and perspective.
Fresh off major results at Gravel Worlds and Gravel Nationals, Chase opens up about developing AFIB during the summer and the surreal moment he found himself in the emergency room just days before hosting the Day Across Minnesota. Together, they talk candidly about racing at a high level, listening to your body, and navigating uncertainty when everything feels like it’s moving fast.
Beyond racing and health, the conversation explores growth, perspective, and hope. Chase shares how Lunchbox Racing expanded from a two-person operation into a four-rider team alongside Drew Dillman, what the second half of last year taught him about balance, and how his mindset heading into this season feels fundamentally different. The episode wraps with some much-needed levity during Random Fire, including Chase’s all-time wild karaoke pick — a reminder that even in heavy seasons, joy still has a seat at the table.

In this episode of The Stable Cyclist Podcast, Dylan Johnson returns for a deeply honest conversation about a season that unraveled in ways most people never saw. While Dylan’s 2025 was publicly defined by being hit by a truck and fracturing his tibial plateau — a story covered widely elsewhere — this conversation goes beyond what everyone saw. Dylan opens up about how the long recovery, stalled progress, and feeling like he had nothing to show for the year slowly gave way to depression, challenging his sense of identity both on and off the bike.
JP and Dylan unpack what it was like to sit with that reality, how depression can quietly build during injury recovery, and what ultimately helped Dylan reckon with it and move forward. The episode closes on a lighter note with a round of random-fire questions that show a different, more playful side of Dylan — a reminder that even in difficult seasons, humor and humanity still have a place.

In the first episode of The Stable Cyclist Podcast for 2026, I sit down with Richard Pool, better known to many in the cycling world as Bicycle Crumbs. Richard is widely respected for his work in cycling marketing, including his roles at Speedvagen Cycles and Silca, and for the way he has built a career rooted in genuine relationships. In this conversation, we explore why relationships often matter more than talent — not just in the cycling industry, but in life — and how showing up, staying curious, and investing in people can shape unexpected career paths.
Richard shares stories from his early roots in gravel cycling, his transition through different corners of the bike world, and the role that shared adventures play in a meaningful life. From racing events like Mid South to chasing ambitious personal challenges — including the idea of attempting a 24-hour distance record around a roundabout — this episode dives into the importance of always having one big, epic goal on the calendar. We also reflect on how our own paths crossed, how collaboration naturally followed, and how those relationships ultimately led us to working together at Silca, telling deeper stories within the cycling community.

Nearly a decade ago, American cyclocross racer Ben Frederick suffered a devastating crash that changed everything. What began as a concussion spiraled into a traumatic brain injury (TBI), years of post-concussion syndrome, and a long, uncertain recovery that cost Ben his career, his identity, and nearly his life.
As his physical recovery stalled, Ben fell into deep depression and developed an eating disorder — clinging to the one thing he felt he could still control. At rock bottom, facing a life-or-death moment, Ben made a defining decision: not like this.
In this episode of The Stable Cyclist Podcast, Ben shares his full story — from injury and identity loss to rebuilding his life piece by piece. We talk about traumatic brain injury, mental health in endurance sports, disordered eating, and the difficult process of finding meaning beyond performance.
That journey ultimately led Ben back to the cyclocross start line, culminating this season with a powerful return to the UCI Cyclocross World Cup, finishing on the lead lap in Tábor.
This conversation goes far beyond racing. It’s a story about survival, resilience, and redefining success when everything you thought defined you is taken away.
Whether you’re an athlete, cyclist, or someone navigating recovery after trauma, this episode offers a rare and honest look at what it really takes to keep going.
