Part 2 of Our Flag Means Survival- OFMD Season 2 Episode 1 "Impossible Birds."  We select the line "Hanging on by a thread" and discuss what that phrase reminds us of, how it connects to our own lives, and how it can act as a call to action. We also bless our favorite characters in this episode.
Our Flag Means Survival Part 1- We discuss the theme of survival in Season 2 Episode 1 "Impossible Birds." We think about all of the different survival strategies the characters use to get through some very tough times.
This episode includes references to depression and mental health that may act as triggers.  Our Flag Means Death Part 2- We randomly selected the line "Hanging on by a thread" from Season 1 Episode 10 and discuss   Where does this line show up in the episode? What does this line remind you of in other movies, stories, etc...? What does this line remind you of in your own life? What does this line call you do do in your own life?   TWO PART EPISODES! In an effort to keep our episodes lengths manageable and still share our conversations, we are trying out releasing our podcast episodes into two parts release on the same day. The first part will include our discussion of the theme, and the second part will be our reading practice, character blessings, and favorite lines from the episodes (also known as "sparklets").
This episode includes references to depression and mental health that may act as triggers.  Our Flag Means Death Part 1- We discuss the theme of Death in Our Flag Means Death Season 1 Episode 10 "Wherever you Go, There you Are." In this first part of our discussion we discuss death in terms of transformation and consider the difference between holding on and letting go.   TWO PART EPISODES! In an effort to keep our episodes lengths manageable and still share our conversations, we are trying out releasing our podcast episodes into two parts release on the same day. This week Victoria shares a story about "what power looks like," and how that connects to the clothes you wear. We reflect on how Ed's beard communicates his power and also how he can be in power without his beard. We consider the power other characters have, and how that shifts when they are together.
This episode we dive deep into friendships and alliances. We discover the power of authentic relationships between the characters (Go Frenchie and Wee John!) and the impact these choices have on personal growth. We spend A LOT of time talking about Calico Jack and discussing his motivations and consider the parallels between him and Stede during our sacred reading practice.
This episode we explore all of the different discoveries characters make in Episode 7.  We also begin a new reading practice based on a specific question Katie has about the episode.
This episode we discuss craftsmanship in Episode 6 of Our Flag Means Death. (Retitled to be SFW).    We also have two rounds of sharing our our favorite quotes from this episode.
This episode we consider the different definitions of the word strength, and which characters play to their personal strengths.    We choose our favorite lines (sparklets!) from the episode and arrange them together into a new phrase.   "Jeff never turns his back on a challenge. Always work your way from the outside in. Actually, I just think I'm so so, but I've decided to carry myself like I'm cute. I love a good shanty. Polite culture ho."   Instagram @marmalademermaid
This week we consider, what do you do when you desire something? How do Taylor Swift, Eminem, and Shakespeare help us better understand what it means to desire the thing you never knew you always wanted?    For our sacred reading practice we gather the following quotes from the episode (also known as "sparklets") and place them together to create new meaning.    "My dream is wrong. All we have is this one life, we have to try don't we? I have one gun and one knife, just like everyone else. I suppose I do work for Blackbeard.  What is even happening right now?"   "Frankfurters. We need to be a lighthouse.  All their blood is going to be on your hands, it's going to be your fault. Peasants marry for love. Mary has acreage.  You wanna do something weird?"     Next time we will discuss episode 5 through the theme of "strength."   Instagram @marmalademermaid
This week we discuss which characters behave gently with each other in the third episode of Our Flag Means Death. Is Stede truly a "gentle" pirate, or does that title belong to Izzy? We also consider if this episode is really about the paradox of gentility and identity. For our sacred reading practice we question if Spanish Jackie knows what "gauche" means and how a nose jar can be a valid strategy when running your business.  Next time we will discuss episode 4 through the theme of "desire."   Instagram @marmalademermaid
This week we discuss where we notice the theme of Being Seen in the second episode of Our Flag Means Death. We contemplate being seen as an important part of creating our identity and consider which characters feel they are seen in a way that feels authentic. For our sacred reading practice we think about "dibs" as a strategy and discover how dibs creates opportunities to better see others.    Next time we will discuss episode 3 through the theme of "gentle."    Instagram @marmalademermaid
For our very first episode we discuss the theme of peace throughout the pilot episode of Our Flag Means Death. We consider how Stede achieves peace with his crew through an unexpected act of violence. We explore which characters feel inner peace on the Revenge and how Stede enhances his safe space by creating a "peace bubble."  Next time we will discuss episode 2 through the theme of being seen.  Instagram @marmalademermaid
Sneak peek of our first Our Flag Means Death podcast episode! In Episode 1 we Marmalade Mermaids discuss Our Flag Means Death as a Sacred Text through the lens of Peace. This is the Sacred Reading Practice we learned from Harry Potter and the Sacred Text. Every two weeks we watch one episode looking for examples of a particular theme and then we talk it through as a crew.  Our First Episode is Our Flag Means.... Peace. Who has peace? Who is looking for peace? Who discovers new opportunities for peace? And how does this discussion of peace change how we think about peace in Our Flag Means Death and in our own lives? Episodes will be released every two weeks starting 1/16/24. Until then, enjoy this sneak peek.  Instagram: @marmalademermaid
