Vaginal dryness is a common issue affecting many women, especially during and after menopause. While it may be a sensitive topic to discuss, it's important to address this discomfort with healthcare providers.
The lack of estrogen, a hormone responsible for keeping the vagina lubricated, is the main cause of vaginal dryness in menopause.
We explore different products available for treating vaginal atrophy, such as vaginal estrogen cream, estrogen rings, and tablets. Each product has its advantages and disadvantages in terms of convenience, cost, and coverage.
It's crucial for women to be knowledgeable about these options when discussing their symptoms with their provider.
Additionally, we emphasize the importance of finding the right solution for each individual, as not all products may work equally well for everyone.

Hormones are critical chemical messengers in our body, constantly relaying signals between organs and maintaining homeostasis. This podcast episode delves into the fascinating world of hormones, explaining their role and the difference between our nervous system and endocrine system.
The endocrine system acts as the thermostat, slowly regulating our body's temperature, while the nervous system responds more quickly.
Hormones work using a lock and key mechanism, with specific hormones unlocking receptors in organs to initiate various actions.
The thyroid hormone is explored as an example of a master hormone that affects multiple organs, including our metabolism, temperature regulation, and gastrointestinal tract.
We also touch upon the importance of optimal hormone levels, as many individuals experience symptoms that may be related to hormonal imbalances even if their levels fall within the normal range.
The impact of aging, lifestyle factors, and surgical interventions on hormone production is also discussed, emphasizing the need for hormone optimization to maintain overall well-being.

Today's episode discusses the changes that occur in the skin after menopause. While aging is a factor, the main cause of these changes is the decrease in estrogen levels. Estrogen plays a critical role in maintaining skin health, including collagen production. The loss of estrogen leads to a decline in collagen, resulting in wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin. Additionally, estrogen increases skin moisture and improves the skin's barrier function. Sun exposure is another major factor in skin damage, so wearing sunscreen daily is crucial. Good sleep is essential for skin repair and hormone production. Smoking has various negative effects on the skin, including collagen and elastin damage. Medical grade products and procedures can help treat skin damage, but it's important to consult with a skin specialist for the most effective options.
Key moments in this episode are:
00:28 Estrogen for skin health
00:49 Estrogen's effect on collagen
02:13 Timing of estrogen for skin effect
02:43 Estrogen for skin moisture

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and breast cancer risk has long been overestimated. For too long, both patients and providers have overestimate the risk of hormone replacement therapy and undervalued its value. Despite the fear surrounding HRT and breast cancer, the actual risks are relatively low.
The Womens' Health Initiative study (WHI), which played a significant role in shaping opinions, has been criticized for its flaws and limitations, resulting in skewed headlines that caused widespread anxiety.
Understanding the study's flaws and limitations is crucial to interpreting its results correctly.
The study's patient population skewed towards older women, which impacted the results and made them less applicable to menopausal women in their 50s.
HRT can offer various benefits, such as reducing heart disease, stroke, and osteoporosis risk.
The results of the study are only applicable to conjugated equine estrogens (CEE) and medroxyprogesterone acetate, a synthetic progestin.
Using bioidentical hormones, particularly micronized progesterone, can be a safer alternative.
The critical window for starting HRT, typically in the perimenopause and early menopause stages, is highlighted as an important factor in determining the benefits and risks of hormone use.
By debunking the fear surrounding hormones and breast cancer, the aim is to empower women to make informed decisions and seek guidance from hormone specialists.

Testosterone is often misunderstood, and that can create fear about use of this very critical hormone. It's often wrongly considered a hormone only important for men. In reality, testosterone is crucial for both men and women, with women actually having higher levels of testosterone than estrogen. Women's testosterone levels peak in their 20s and 30s, gradually declining as they age. Optimizing testosterone can alleviate various symptoms such as low libido, difficulty reaching orgasm, brain fog, fatigue, and even improve muscle mass and bone density. Contrary to popular belief, testosterone is not solely responsible for libido but also plays a significant role in many other bodily functions. It affects various organs, including the brain, heart, bladder, uterus, ovaries, vaginal tissue, skin, and bones. Testosterone promotes healthy muscle growth, aids in bone strength, reduces inflammation, and even decreases the risk of dementia. While there are no FDA-approved testosterone products for women, the use of bioidentical testosterone has been deemed safe by numerous studies and reports from patients.
In this episode, you'll be able to:
