Description
Baggage is a podcast showcasing a collection of compelling, unique, and sometimes traumatic stories from people of all walks of life. These stories typically only get heard by the storyteller’s friends, family, or co-workers. Now there is a platform for everyday individuals to share their experiences with a larger audience as well as how they cope with the emotional and mental baggage that sometimes follows those events. Once a month, the show’s hosts—Eric Shaw (doctor), Ryan Frank (prosecutor), Adrian Bonenberger (journalist/author), and Ryan Conner (comedian)—hear a different set of stories bringing their own distinct perspectives. Sometimes serious and sometimes humorous, it’s sure to always be interesting.
The show is a unique vehicle to highlight and donate to charities who contribute to trauma and mental needs. Collaborating charities include the Dear Jack Foundation (https://www.dearjackfoundation.org/ ) and Canine Companions (https://canine.org/ ), among others. The ultimate goal of the show is to donate profits directly to these charities, as well as give them a platform to get their message out. In this episode, the guys interview Kasey. Until very recently, an air traffic controller. You won’t hear many air traffic controllers being interviewed. And after this episode, you’ll understand why. The guys talk about the difficulties faced by controllers these days; some expected, some not. They also share some interesting and/or funny stories about what happens on the job. Area 51 even gets a mention. In this episode, Ryan Conner starts off with shamming Ryan Frank about his abysmal year in their fantasy football league. It’s unnecessary, hurtful, and we will speak no more on the subject. The guys then talk about the implications of recent rulings on abusive head trauma and the ongoing trends in book banning and censorship. As is the case with every Carry-On episode, the guys eventually end up talking about old movies and how they really should deal with the child trauma inflicted on them with their parents’ free-range style vis a vie exposure to age inappropriate movies.Music provided by Quincy Ledbetter (https://www.qledbetter.com/).Artwork provided by Megan Weaver (https://meganweaverart.com/).Special thank you to our premium members. Ryan, let’s say, takes issue with how it was discussed in a recent episode of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (S12 E29 · November 9, 2025: Felony Murder). The guys follow up on the most recent episode that featured Russ Hamilton, a correctional officer with years of experience and some out there stories. The Ryans and Eric didn’t experience any riots, but they do have a few jail stories of their own. No, not from the inside (although there’s still time). The guys share anecdotes from work and life that hit on the mental health issues and dangerous situations associated with incarceration. The conclusion: jail is not fun. Shocker. In this episode, the guys talk a little about Ryan Conner’s writing talents as well as the most recent episode featuring firefighter Brad Lilly. Eric talks about how the trauma Brad shared just scratched the surface compared to what’s in his book. Apropos of nothing, Eric shares a couple stories from space camp. In this episode, the guys are joined by Brad Lilly, a former firefighter and author. Warning! This is one of the more graphic episodes descripting traumatic events. The guys delve into the intense and often overlooked mental health challenges faced by firefighters. Brad shares his personal journey through trauma, the impact of cumulative stress, and the struggle for mental well-being in a high-pressure environment. The conversation highlights the importance of support systems and what happens when the “system” lets you down. You find Brad's book on Amazon here, or search for The Bravest: A Fireman's Tale by Bradley Lilly.Music provided by Quincy Ledbetter (https://www.qledbetter.com/).Artwork provided by Megan Weaver (https://meganweaverart.com/).Special thank you to our premium members. Eric and Ryan Frank talk a little (and we mean a little) about the most recent episode with Charlee Minkin, a Judo Olympian. Then the guys just slip into movie talk. Without Ryan Conner or Adrian around, those two revert to their 13-year-old selves. In this episode, the guys follow up on the last episode that featured immigration lawyer, Kyle Mitchell. They start by discussing the impact of social media on public perception (translation . . . the internet is a dark place). There’s a fun clip of Kyle’s double life as a jiu-jitsu purple belt fighting crime (not exactly). That then leads to the guys taking a hard right into talking about cauliflower ear way too long. They also wax philosophical about religion and Eric shares his concert experience seeing Andrew McMahon at Red Rocks.Music provided by Quincy Ledbetter (https://www.qledbetter.com/).Artwork provided by Megan Weaver (https://meganweaverart.com/).Special thank you to our premium members. The guys interview Patrick Glen, a medicolegal death investigator. What exactly is a medicolegal death investigator? Among other things, they see more dead people than any profession that you’ve ever heard or thought of. If that wasn’t Baggage-worthy enough, Patrick also had to personally interact with the families of the deceased nearly every time. He talks about suicides (and we mean a lot of suicides), some truly bizarre accidental deaths, murders, etc. As awful as that all sounds, Patrick is truly one of the most positive guests that has appeared on the show. In this episode, Ryan and Eric follow up on the last episode that featured a firefighter. So of course they discuss childbirth, rats, and wildfires. Eric shares his stories of delivering babies during his medical training and the challenges faced during his wife's pregnancy. Then the guys talk about rats, mice, more rats, and raccoons (nothing to do with firefighting of course). Regardless, it’s the lighter side of the show and a nice change of pace before the next guest episode that will be … heavy.
