Holland America Oosterdam Ship to Antarctica Part Two Oh the people you meet when traveling A conversation with Captain Kevin Beirnaert Holland American Oosterdam ship is one of my favorite ships in their fleet. I've sailed on it two times and each time with Captain Kevin. He was born in Gent in Northwest Belgium, and moved to Antwerp to attend the Maritime Academy.  He shared that he has been around ships all of his life and was inspired by his father who also sails the deep blue sea.   In 2004, he was employed with the world’s largest dredging company, “Jan de Nul,” and worked on the dredger Alexander von Humboldt in Dubai to build a new city, now world famously named Palm Island. Captain Beirnaert joined Holland America Line in 2006 and rotated on several ships, including Rotterdam as third officer, Rotterdam VI through 2011, as first officer and was promoted to chief officer / staff captain in 2012, after having sailed on Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, and Veendam. On Eurodam for three years, he met his now-wife, Amber, who was vacationing with friends but had also been a cast member with the 2010 Holland America Line Revue shows, performing on Zuiderdam and Prinsendam. Captain Beirnaert’s experience on Eurodam propelled him to the supervisory team of the company’s first Pinnacle Class ship, Koningsdam, then the second in the class, Nieuw Statendam V, and finally as staff captain to oversee the building of the third ship, Ryndam IV. I had a chance to sit down and chat with Captain Kevin - take a listen.
Holland America Oosterdam Ship to Antarctica Part One Oh the people you'll meet - Holland America Crew Traveling on Holland America's Oosterdam ship was a grand experience. I've traveled on this ship two times now and each time has been a true delight. Travel has a very special meaning for me. I've wanted to go, go, go since I was a little girl. Always jumping up to head out with anyone leaving. It didn't matter as long as I was going. When I think of my life and travel it all started when I was a little girl sitting in the back of my parents blue station wagon going to Florida for summer vacation. That was where my dad was from and it was our chance to visit with an extended family of uncles, aunts, cousins, grand mother and friends.   Those trips are truly what my love of travel are built on. Interstate highways, toll roads, Howard Johnson restaurants, pit stops for gas or to stretch our legs at rest stops and the long winding roads that seem to go on forever. My sister and I would play various road trip games, counting blue or red cars, spotting out-of-state license plates and our most fun was who could find the first corn field and say "broke-down, shuck-down corn stalks."  Why that was so exciting I can not tell you. We would laugh for hours, pointing and trying to be the first to say the funny statement. Through my years of travel, what has truly become one of the best parts of travel is having a chance to sit and talk with other travelers; to hear their stories, learn about how they got started and advise me on what to see, do and experience in the places they love.   Recently I had a chance to cruise to Antarctica and south america on Holland American Oosterdam ship. I was onboard for 22 days.  Enough time to meet new friends and learn all about their travel lives.   I sat down with several of the crew to hear how travel has shaped their lives and what they love most about traveling to far away places and how to experience a dream destination like a trip to the Antarctica.   It's time for you to book your voyage on Holland America Oosterdam ship. Check out additional articles and shows about Holland America Take a listen and also check out the photos below. Travel With Your Couple Friends Tips for returning home with your friendship in tack Have you thought about travel with your couple friends? It is a great way to extend your time together and add some additional fun too. However, there are steps and tips to make sure when you return home, you're still friends and buddies.  Each way of travel, solo, with partner or with couples, has its own dynamics, pros and cons.  While vacations are meant to be an escape from your everyday life, it can be enhanced with others or going it alone. Also, there could be more challenges than your bargained for just when the fun is getting started.  I decided to dig into all the ups and downs of traveling with another couple.  There is more positive than negative, so let's share that from the start.  First question is: Why travel with another couple. First of all the old saying, the more the merrier;  well that can apply to traveling with another couple. First of all they should be your friends. And, friends that you’ve spent time with, enjoy their company and have always wanted to venture out and see the world together. Traveling with them takes the fun you have at home to fun on the road. When you travel with your couple friends there are some benefits to traveling with those outside your immediate family. 1.  Sharing the cost - that bucket list destination can be more budget friendly when sharing the cost. For many of us, when we are traveling with your family, you may pay for everyone in your family, for food, activities, accommodations and travel. It can be expensive.  When you’re traveling with friends, you are paying for yourself and maybe your spouse. Renting a house with your friends is less expensive than booking two hotel room and you’re sharing the cost of food too. Add car rental to that and another big expense has been cut in half.  Doc Bill and I have travel with a couple and share a short term rental home.  It worked out great and it was so fun to all be together for fun actives in the evening and enjoying coffee to start our day.   2.  You don’t have to be the grown up or the decision maker for everything Traveling with your kids adults or young… you will get that feeling… you know the one you get down in your gut to make sure everyone is ok and all is going well. It’s that parent sense of responsibility, it’s just there and even if you’re not conscious of it…. It’s there.  Their safety and well-being has been and will always be your focus. Travel with your couple friends can mean bonding like you can't at home. 3. Bonding and connecting unlike your time at home You share similar likes and interest and you’ve lived similar experiences.  That’s what makes you great friends.  Now’s the time to explore those similiaries on the road. Doing the things you love together in a different space and place.  You’re going to create awesome memories and have fun talking about your time together for years to come. 4. Strengthen your relationship While traveling can bringing out things about people you may find hard to understand or appreciate, getting to know your friend on another level is sure to strengthen relationships that already important in your life. Even if there are some ups and downs while traveling together, there’s no better way to get to. Know someone than traveling together.   5.  You get to know yourself a little better too.  Travel is a great way to learn more about yourself.  Traveling with another couple let’s you see more about how you handle and connect with others.  It takes you a little outside of your comfort zone.  When traveling with others, there is compromise and collaborating… things that you may not have to do when traveling with your partner or a best friend who travels with you often.  And, for solo travelers, there can be a big jump from traveling alone to bringing along a buddy.  I have a dear friend who travels with me often.

Hawaii Culture and History On Molokai For Hawaii Culture and history of Molokai, one of their most pristine islands, is a perfect way to see old Hawaii. Residents of the island have found a way to maintain their culture, celebrate and share their history and educate us on their legacy. Two of my favorite things to explore when traveling are culture and history. Both tell us about the people and place. We can learn many details about a destination. During my visit to Molokai, also known as the 'friendly' island learning about the local culture was the highlight.  The island is filled with beautiful nature and spectacular vistas but surprisingly Molokai is the least visited of the main Hawaiian Islands. As far as you can see, the beautiful foliage and amazing trees, spread across the mountains giving Molokai some of the most beautiful sceneries in either direction you look. Molokai is truly unique and like going back in time in Hawaiʻi. There are no fancy resorts and restaurants and golf courses. It is all about Hawaii Culture and History on Molokai. There is a lot to explore; as the locals will say, "t is for the most part, frozen in time." I loved my visit because of the unique and enlightening cultural experience with Gregory Solatorio. His family has lived in the Halawa Valley of Molokai for many, many generations.   Greg is a cultural practitioner who lives off the land in Molokaʻi. The Solatorios are the last original family left in the valley. Greg’s father was the last elder, born and raised here. Their lineage connects them back to the first Hawaiian settlers on Molokaʻi. His family was one of the first to live in Halawa Valley. Hawaii culture and history on Molokai is best told by those who know it, live it and preserve it. The island is filled with beautiful nature and spectacular vistas but surprisingly Molokai is the least visited of the main Hawaiian Islands. Greg is the son of Anakala Pilipo. Through the years he shared the Hawaiian culture with many visitors, ensuring the culture is understood as it truly is. On my visit Greg’s oldest son Devak guided us to the family farm, shared the essence and details of Hawaii culture and history on Molokai and taught us how to see the beauty in the island, not only as a tourist but through their eye;  the guardians of Halawa Valley. They have been working with uncruise for 15 years.   Take a listen to the show. It starts our introduction to Molokai culture given by Greg.  It follows with his son David providing details and stories of Hawaii culture and history on Molokai and the Halawa Valley.  Be prepared to be enlightened.  Listen to part 1 to hear all about my UnCruise experience told by crew from my trip. Hawaiian Islands Land and Sea Part 1 Hawaiian Islands - land and sea is how I experienced these beautiful island earlier in 2024. I toured with UnCruise, a cruise line with a different approach to seeing our favorite destinations.  You may ask what is an UnCruise. It's not very hard to explain. What does the name mean? UnCruise is all about the adventure and exploring destinations off the ship.  Creating enriching adventure where you explore nature, culture and the people who live in the destinations  Uncruise is also about protecting the environment and works to provide sustainable opportunities in the local communities they visit.   Working with local guides and businesses keeps local communities thriving. One key component of the company’s mission statement is to actively promote environmental protection through education, actions, and initiatives that promote responsible travel   The company started with cruises in Alaska - itineraries to Alaska remain one of their key destinations   They started with one yacht but now their are multiple ships and other destinations have been added.  Visiting the Hawaiian Islands land and sea is one of the itineraries offered by UnCruise. Alaska, their original itinerary along with Galapagos, Baja Mexico, Aleutian Islands and a new addition this year, Prince William Sound means there is an itinerary everyone will love. My cruise sailing the Hawaiian Islands land and sea was filled with adventure. I started  in Molokai with a full day of cultural experience in Halawa valley. There we visited a family who has lived in the area for 50 generations.  We talked with the father and son about Hawaiian culture and how to announce you would like to come for a visit to the historic valley.  The traditional blowing of a shell call the PU, what we would call a conch shell or large whelk shell, alerts your host that you're near and would like to visit.   We learned about the history, culture and family's long legacy in the valley. Part two of this series on the Hawaiian Islands land and sea shares conversations with the family. Make sure and listen for an informational and enlightening chat. This episode of Hawaiian Islands land and sea shares conversations with the UnCruise crew. What's it like to sail with them on their Safari Explorer ship and how you too can have an adventure, unlike any cruise you've had before. The Safari Explorer is built for comfort and luxury too, it holds 36 passengers max with 18 cabins with two decks for relaxing and checking out the scenery.  Dinning area, lounge area, library and music room complete the passenger areas where sing-alongs,  nightly presentation about Hawaiian islands land and sea,  history, culture, land and wildlife are shared. UnCruise is known for their adventure. Excursions are active with a choice of paddle boards, kayaks, Skift rides to explore the shore, snorkeling, Viewing the sea life - including the manta rays and whales is all part of your day. A visit to their open bridge gives you an opportunities to see how the crew navigates the waters. On my cruise we had a female officer guiding us along the Hawaiian Islands. Our meals included local seafood where much of the food is source from the various islands visited. Take a listen to my conversations with the crew and make sure to check out part 2 of Hawaiian Islands Land and Sea it's all about Hawaii culture and history on Molokai. Now it's time for you to plan your UnCruise Adventures. Check out their itineraries and set sail for fun on land and sea. Photos:

The survey says yes. Mexico comes in at number one and two on the list. Cancun continues to rank at the top of the list, along with Cabo, a favorite for those looking for not just spring break fun but adventures around the island on land and in the water.  A personal favorite on the list is London. It has always been a city I have found filled with history, art, culture, and many activities that get you out and about the city. Plus, there are no language barriers that some travelers might find in other European destinations.   The Rocky Mountaineer from Denver, Colorado to Moab, Utah Where are you heading next? Destination: The Clotilda The story of the last slave ship The Clotilda tells an American story of tragedy, hope, and resurrection. The Clotilda, the last known slave ship to enter the United States, is about the people who were onboard, enslaved, and freed and went on to live meaningful and proud lives in the city and town they created for their families. It all started under cover of night in the summer of 1860 when a ship carrying 110 African captives slipped into Mobile Bay after leaving port off of West Africa. The Clotilda, originally built to transport cargo, was owned and built by Mobile businessman Timothy Maher and was the last known American slave ship. Maher commissioned Captain William Foster to construct and pilot the ship to Africa and capture men, women, and children from what was then the Kingdom of Dahomey. Foster bought Africans captured by warring tribes with the knowledge of this being an illegal purchase of human cargo.  As the ship slowly slipped into Mobile Bay under the cover of night, it headed up the Mobile River. Some of the transported enslaved were divided between Foster and the Meahers, and others were sold. Foster then ordered the Clotilda taken upstream, burned, and sunk to conceal the evidence of their illegal activity.   The illegal voyage was 52 years after the international slave trade was outlawed. As time passed, the Africans survived enslavement and established a community as free Americans in their self-sufficient community. Although enslaved, they maintained their African identities, creating the tight-knit, independent community known as Africatown located north of downtown Mobile. Knowledge of their homeland, cultural traditions, and, most of all, details of their capture remained with them. They shared their knowledge and culture with children and grandchildren throughout the years. The survivors of Clotilda shared their rich understanding of what happened in 1860; they knew the vivid details and ensured others would understand that Clotilda was much more than just a ship, but a group of people torn from family, land, space, and place.  As the survivors told the story through the years, the Clotilda remained an elusive "where is it" story. In 2019, researchers announced the discovery of Clotilda, which was found at the bottom of the Mobile River. The names and stories passed down through generations of descendants are now for the world to hear and see. Their stories and finding the ship's remains are another testament to the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade, where people were sold, enslaved, and labored their whole lives. However, the story of the people and the community of Africatown is one of survival and resilience. Timothy Meaher's illegal passage from Africa is now documented in the Clotilda - The Exhibition At The Africatown Heritage House, a site of the Mobile History Museum. In 2023, National Geographic honored the Clotilda Museum as the best museum opening in 2023. Here's proof: truth will come to light; it may take time, and it may not be the story some want to hear, but it is an American story with its rightful place in history. Click here for more Information about Clotilda Below are photos from the museum.

Destination: Year in Review 2023 Farewell to 2023. This  year in review highlights a phenomenal travel year of travel.I’ve had a chance to visit countries I had not visited in over twenty years.  Some places since my Pan Am days. It’s always enlightening to revisit a place after so many years, to see what has changed and what has remained the same.  Several of the countries I revisited, I had a chance to explore new cities and areas. This was one of the highlights of my travel  - exploring places I thought I already knew.   On the show, I share some of my favorite conversations and trips during my amazing year of travel. On each of the trips I learned a great deal, became inspired by the personal stories shared and the experience of being one-on-one with the people, places and cultures around the globe.   Early in 2023 I traveled on the Rocky Mountaineer from Moab Utah to Denver Colorado. I’ve always loved train travel and this luxury experience is top of my list for spectacular experiences and I think it should be on yours too.  During my time on the train, I talked with Carolyn Rohaly about the Rocky Mountaineer and why it’s your option to visiting the Canadian Rockies or the US Red Rocks. The idea of traveling around the world visiting cities and places you’ve seen in photos is a dream most of us have. But, there are some people who travel as their job. Traveling around the world all the time.  What is that like? Although I worked for an international airline for almost 13 years, I still wonder what would it be like to work on a cruise ship, where you’re traveling all the time from place to place and meeting new friends on the ship and in port.   On what I call my dream trip, sailing with Windstar Cruises to Morocco, Portugal, Spain and Gibraltar, I sat down with two of their crew, Richard Mayer, hotel manager and Joseph Rose, receptionist,. Their warm personality, fun spirited outlook on life, made my cruise fun but also had me wondering what would it be like to work on a cruise ship. They were the perfect pair to ask. The podcast - Quarter Miles Travel goes in search of history featured on the back of a U.S. Mint state and commemorative quarters.  Greg Wyman gives us all the details on how the program started. Last on the show is a trip to Sweden and a journey along the Viking trail. The show went in search finding the truth vs. the Hollywood myths shown in TV and films. Listen and come along to some of my favorite destinations and trips for 2023. Check out their website: Rocky Mountaineer Windstar Cruises Quarter Miles Travel

Although Nov. 11th is Veteran's Day it is also a good time to say thank you to our active service men and women. Have you ever thought about how much you know about Veterans Day?  So often we celebrate the holiday without fully understanding the reason why or how it has become an important date to recognize.  Veterans Day was formerly known as Armistice Day. This day was originally set as a U.S. day to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In 1938, through an act of Congress, November 11th was made a legal holiday. In 1954, veterans service organizations, worked hard urging for all veterans and wars to be recognized for their service.  The 83rd U.S. Congress amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans.” On June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.  On today's show we are featuring the perfect way to gather and honor family and friends who have served our county to keememorative coin p us free and secure. Windstar Cruises Now is the perfect time to start planning your next getaway. Windstar Cruises is one of the best ways to see the world and check off those bucket list destinations is by cruising.   You jump on board and you’re set for the next days - no repacking, checking in and out of different hotels, finding your way through strange cities trying to locate your hotel or rental apartment. Cruising throws all of that hassle overboard.  I recently sailed with Windstar Cruise on their Star Pride ship. Their luxury yacht ship with stops in Barcelona, Morocco, Spain and Portugal was my home away from home. I was most amazed with my excursion, hiking the Rock of Gilbratar and visiting Casablanca. I’d always wanted to see Casablanca since childhood, when my father talked about his time there in the service.   Wind star has a very warm and inviting vibe. When you’re onboard, it takes only a few minutes to make friends with other passengers and the crew too.  I wanted to know more about this spirit of inclusion and oneness that spreads throughout the ship.  I sat down with several crew members to talk about how you too can have an adventure onboard Windstar.

Destination: Viking Age– Myths, Truth and Little Known Facts Part 2 Vikings Age - Myths, Truth and little-known facts.  I'm back with more information. While touring Sweden and the Viking Trail, I talked with many Viking period experts. Their stories, historical data, and artifacts they share sure did help to burst the myths and find the truth and little-known facts. I hope you listened to part one of Vikings to get the first part of the story. However, you don't necessarily have to listen to them in order. On my last show, I share information about the fascinating Viking age and how our impressions from TV and movies have shaped the world's perceptions about the Scandinavian people.  Viking Age myth, truth and little known facts were top of my list to learn about. Visit Sweden invited me to come and take a personal journey along the cities and areas where we were instrumental in building this area and how the Vikings hold a strong legacy in the area.  I learned so much during my visit that I couldn't fit it all into one show. For part two, I'd love to start by exploring who the Vikings were and how they lived their day-to-day lives. I begin by asking the historian Hans where the name Viking originated. I also explore women's role during the Viking Age in this show.  You will find Rune Stones located throughout the Scandinavian area. They help to make the Viking Age a not-so-mysterious period in history. Historians and archeologists know we can time travel when we find extraordinary information we can interpret to tell us many details about the lives of those whom we call Vikings.   Those details are discovered in the graves and burial areas where the Vikings lived, worked, traded in their homeland. During my visit to Sweden, I learned new information about Vikings, dispelling the myths and finding the truth and little-known facts.  www.visitsweden.com Visitstockholm.com And remember to let me know all about your time in Sweden. Here's your link to part one. Take a stroll through the Viking trail with the photos below. Photos Tour guide Johnathan shares details about the rune stones. Also, notice his attire. He is wearing the typical dress and accessories of men during the Viking age Details of the Rune stones are explained. The lettering and symbols tell the story of the person being honored. Take a close up look of Johnathan, attire and also hair for an idea of Viking age dressing. Sunglasses excluded. Women's attire included beads which would also denote wealth. The Gamla Uppsala Museum is filled with Viking Age history, artifacts and information. Gamla Uppsala Museum Typical Viking Age meal Farm animals were important part of day-to-day life. A visit to the Viking Museum in Stockholm. Filled with history and exhibits to tell the truth and dispel the myths about Vikings. You also may have a chance to take a photo with Vikings. If so, put on your mean-mug (mean face). Viking museum - I came upon a Viking who obviously felt I would be a good person to lean on. Could I have been a Viking? I think he'd say yes. More Viking friendships are made during our visit to the Viking Museum and a very hearty and festive dinner.   Birka Island A visit to the island's museum and a walk among the grounds to see rune stones and burial areas. We also learned about a Viking woman, who is incidentally an ancestor of our guide.  She told us her DNA can be traced back to the Viking woman. Living history museum Must see museums in Stockholm Vasa Museum Spirit Museum The little red horse...known as the Dalecarlian horse or Dala horse is a traditional carved, painted wooden statue of a horse originating in the Swedish. It is the perfect souvenir to take home to remember your time in Sweden.
Destination: Vikings -  Myths, Truth and Little Known Facts   Vikings - myths, truth and little known facts. How much do you know about the Vikings and the time they lived, roam the seas and made their mark on world history? Vikings, the warriors from the North. The bloodthirsty, fearless, and seafaring, relentless in their pursuits, men from the North.; those Norsemen we see in the movies and TV shows. Is it true? Were they the bad boys from the North., spreading havoc around Europe and traveling as far as Africa, Asia, and North America? Let's dig into history and find where the myth ends, and the truth begins. Vikings have captured our immigration and interest through the years from TV and films created by Hollywood. The Northman, Vikings, and Valhalla draw us to see how they lived. They did live interesting live according to our TV. We want to learn more about them. Who were the Vikings, and where did they come from? Their larger-than-life stories make them seem mysterious, increasing our desire to know more. But with so much focus on creating an image of violence, murderers, uncivilized savages, and raiders, I needed to go to the source and learn more to fight these images and perceptions. To know Vikings myths, truth and little known facts, I was recently invited to tour what I'll call "Sweden's Viking Trail." A chance to walk on the grounds and areas key during the Viking age. The same grounds the Vikings walked. Why Sweden? It is the location of several cities and areas where a large amount of information has been found to give us a picture of their lives and way of life. Much information about the Viking Age has been uncovered through archeological digs and research. Let's explore - The Myths, Truths, and Little Known Facts.
