I'm in Bali. It's day three. I've just been flat on the floor of a CrossFit gym wondering if I'm dying. Welcome back. This week is a solo catch-up from Canggu - covering the CrossFit meltdown a flashback from the Gili Islands 9 years ago, and the big realisation that's been shaping how I think about this show going forward. I get into why AI can give you everything except a real human story, the three pillars I'm using to structure my time out here (reflect, connect, create), how I'm using a moleskine and a camera symbol to build the most useful journal I've ever kept, and why the conversation I enjoy most is the one where the guest stops performing. No guest this week. Just the thoughts, the sunburn, and the sound of what turned out to be a very enthusiastic temple ceremony next door. 00:00 Welcome to Bali: Setting the Scene10:12 The Three Pillars of My Bali Trip14:11 Reflections on Creativity and Travel18:28 Navigating Podcasting Challenges21:06 The Value of Human Experience Over AI30:16 Final Thoughts and Encouragement***LINKS***awakenoutofcontext.comJoin the indiip beta:indiip.com/beta15% Off Bare Bar (CODE: JASE):https://bit.ly/barejase
Experimental format today! I pulled over in the Lake District, pointed the camera and let AI flip the script - interviewing me instead. What came out was more honest than I expected. We cover which marketing channels I'd bet on if starting from scratch, why I'd probably sacrifice the agency if I had to choose, my first long-term relationship and the failure I've never really talked about, four wild podcast concepts I've been sitting on, my complicated relationship with cold plunges, evening ice cream as a recovery tool, and what Bali actually means to me right now.No guest. No structure. Just me, the road through Windermere and Coniston, and an AI that kept trying to wrap the episode early (lol!)If you've been in a liminal phase yourself - unsure what's next - this one might land.Subscribe, leave a review, and drop me a message if any of this resonated. I always reply.***LINKS***awakenoutofcontext.comJoin the indiip beta:indiip.com/beta15% Off Bare Bar (CODE: JASE):https://bit.ly/barejase
No guest this week, just me. Since December I've been in a bit of a flat patch. Not depressed, not broken, just... not quite myself. In this episode I talk through what's been going on: the strange paradox of building more with AI than ever before and feeling less fulfilled because of it, the reality of living alone for four years in a town built around nuclear family life, and why I think my environment has quietly dragged me down.I also touch on the dopamine seesaw, what a therapist said about stress and depression being two sides of the same coin, and why I'm hanging on for Bali to give me a blank canvas again. One for the aficionados only I’d suspect.awakenoutofcontext.com
David Pearce is a British transhumanist philosopher and co-founder of Humanity+, best known for The Hedonistic Imperative; his 1995 manifesto calling for the use of genetic engineering to eliminate suffering from all sentient life.In this episode, I sit down with David for one of the most thought-provoking conversations this podcast has had. We cover whether suffering is a design flaw we could actually fix; the ethics of editing your children's genetic predisposition toward depression; the difference between genome reform and eugenics; why MDMA gave David his clearest glimpse of what mental health could genuinely feel like; and what three decades of banging this drum has taught him.Key topics:- Natural selection as an engine of suffering and how CRISPR could change that- Hedonic set points; what they are, why they matter, and how to raise them- The eugenics problem; why the word is probably "damned forever" even with good intentions- MDMA, psychedelics, and the blind rationalists parable- David's own hedonic set point; a surprisingly honest personal answerSubscribe wherever you listen, and if this one made you think, a review goes a long way.Chapters00:00 David's journey and the hedonistic imperative01:37 Why suffering has loomed large in his own life03:01 30 years of progress; CRISPR, AI and what surprised him10:27 What he'd tell world leaders; end factory farming first13:55 What is a hedonic set point and why does it matter?20:04 Would you want your children engineered to be happier?28:27 SSRIs, antidepressants and the case for genetic alternatives31:53 What is stopping us; the eugenics problem explained35:57 Does suffering produce great art? Today was the closest I've come to giving up the show.Three years. 100+ episodes. Roughly 600 hours of unpaid work. And today almost broke me. Instead of faking it or going quiet, I hit record anyway, had an honest chat with an AI, and figured out what's actually been working. No guest this week. Just me, unedited, sharing the real stuff. In this episode:The inositol + magnesium sleep stack that's finally moving the dial on my anxiety-driven night wakingsWhy human connection is the best inoculator for baseline anxiety — and what I do when I can't access itThe nap and snack pre-gym ritual that's getting me noticeably stronger (and why I inexplicably stopped doing it)Using Yoga Nidra as a no-pressure power nap tool before evening trainingHow I used AI as a thinking partner to pull myself out of a slump and actually get behind the camera todayBuilding a custom AI knowledge base so it actually knows you — not just anyoneThis is not medical advice. If you're navigating a rough patch, questioning your relationship with social media, or feeling strangely disconnected at the start of 2026 - this solo episode will help you feel less alone and more grounded. This one is just me - no guest, no script, no AI polish. An honest check-in on what happens when injury, illness, and lost motivation collide with the pressure to keep performing online and in life. I reflect on leaving my training community, the unexpected hole it left, and what slowly started to fill it again. In this episode, I get into:Why illness doesn't just wreck your body - it disrupts your habits, your gut health, and your neural plasticity in ways that take weeks to recover fromHow leaving a training community can mirror the same identity loss as giving up alcohol or music - and what that reveals about where your meaning actually livesWhy over 50% of online content is now AI-assisted, and what that means if you're trying to stay authentic in a feed full of polishThe connection between chronic social media use and a state of low-grade physiological tension - and why simply being with people dissolves it almost immediatelyHow tying your identity to physical performance creates a house of cards - and what I'm doing to rebuild on steadier groundWhy WhatsApp is making human connection worse, not betterA Leonard Cohen detour and a walk with my cousin that reminded me loneliness can't survive connection - and what to do about it todayDisclaimer: This episode contains strong language and personal reflections on mental health, motivation, and wellbeing. If you're a man who struggles with self-confidence in dating - who second-guesses himself after rejection, spirals into insecurity, or finds it hard to genuinely believe "it's her loss" - this episode will give you a clear, practical framework to work through.I've spent years rebuilding my own self-confidence in dating, and in this solo episode I break down exactly why dating insecurity is so hard to navigate - and share the step-by-step system I now use to make sense of it, cutting through what actually matters from what doesn't.In this episode, you'll learn:- How to use the "it's her loss" test to accurately measure where your self-confidence actually stands right now- A 3-question framework to evaluate any insecurity - whether it's valid, whether it matters, and whether it's in your control- Which common insecurities (looks, money, fitness, social skills) are worth acting on and which ones you can safely discard- How to take action on the insecurities that do matter - including practical steps around finances, fitness, therapy, and social confidence- Why some traits outside your control (like baggage or past relationships) can be reframed as genuine strengths- How to stop letting uncontrollable factors drain your confidence and redirect your energy toward what you can change- I walk through real examples of specific insecurities using the full framework, so you can apply the same process to your own list immediately.Disclaimer: This episode discusses topics related to self-confidence, dating, mental health, and personal development. The content shared is based on personal experience and opinion and is not intended as professional psychological, therapeutic, or relationship advice. Dr. Debra Lieberman is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Miami, co-director of the Evolution and Human Behaviour Laboratory, and Editor-in-Chief of the journal Evolution and Human Behaviour. She holds a BS in Biochemistry from SUNY Binghamton and a PhD in Psychology from UC Santa Barbara's Centre for Evolutionary Psychology, where she trained under field founders Leda Cosmides and John Tooby. Her landmark research on human kin detection has been published in Nature, PNAS, Psychological Review, and Psychological Science, and her book Objection: Disgust, Morality, and the Law (Oxford University Press) examines how the emotion of disgust shapes our legal systems. She helps people understand the evolved mental programs that drive our emotions, relationships, and moral judgements through grounded, research-driven insights. In this episode, you'll learn:1. How your brain uses childhood cues to identify siblings - and why step-siblings trigger different levels of closeness depending on when they entered the family2. The evolved purpose of gratitude and anger as tools for building friendships and signalling your social value - including why bullies and narcissists bypass gratitude entirely3. Why social media exploits your evolved need for recognition and validation - and the specific "internal diagnostic check" you can run before opening the app4. The three functions of disgust - food, contact, and sex - and how disgust gets weaponised in morality, law, and coalitional politics5. How your mate preferences are shaped by early developmental templates - and why someone can tick every box on paper but still feel wrong6. What evolutionary psychology reveals about sexuality, gender identity, and the biological variation behind human sexual developmentThis conversation features real clinical examples of how evolutionary psychology has helped people understand family dynamics, alongside practical insights into navigating social media and modern dating.Disclaimer: This episode discusses topics including sexuality, gender identity, self-harm (in a clinical research context), and evolutionary perspectives on human behaviour. If you're a podcaster navigating interviews with high-status guests, a creator struggling with imposter syndrome, or anyone trying to balance confidence with authenticity - this solo episode will help you understand the invisible power dynamics that shape how you show up in professional relationships.I reflect on the "The Podcast Mentee Phenomenon" after watching billionaire entrepreneur Alex Hormozi interview personal development legend Tony Robbins. This roadcast vlog - filmed during a drive and walk through Grizedale Forest - explores the tension between wanting to project confidence and the value of showing up authentically nervous, drawing from my own experiences interviewing world champions and high-performers while managing my insecurities. In this episode, you'll discover:Why seeing a confident high-performer like Alex Hormozi look nervous revealed something valuable about status dynamics and authenticityThe difference between wanting to learn from someone and being intimidated by them - and how I'm learning to strike that balance in mentor-mentee relationshipsHow physical presence compounds perceived status hierarchies, creating a "Russian doll effect" that amplifies power imbalances (from Tony Robbins towering over Alex to Chris Williamson next to Chris Bumstead)Why audiences respond more to vulnerability than confidence - and what that means for how you should prepare for high-stakes conversationsPractical techniques I use to manage pre-interview nerves, including my "who the fuck I am" confidence ritual and breath work protocolsThe middle path approach to showing up in professional encounters - oscillating between confidence and nervousness rather than forcing either extremeWhy resisting small discomforts outside your comfort zone (like filming yourself walking past strangers) prevents the growth you're seeking in bigger areas of your lifeThis reflection includes examples from my interviews with HYROX world champion Alexander Ronchovich and my appearance on the Let's Talk Attachment podcast, where my vulnerable approach to discussing anxious attachment created unexpected audience connection.Chapters00:00:00 Trailer Intro: What Alex Hormozi Taught Me About Vulnerability & The Podcast Mentee Phenomenon00:00:50 Introduction En Route To Grizedale Forest00:01:49 My Thoughts On The Tony Robbins & Alex Hormozi Interview00:08:47 Beginning Of Woodland Trail Walk: Growth, Exposure & Discomfort00:11:38 Tony Robbins & Alex Hormozi The Mentor Mentee Dynamic, Status & Respect00:14:01 The Podcast Mentee Phenomenon00:16:03 What Alex Hormozi Taught Me About Vulnerability00:17:20 How I Interview Big Guests Without Shrinking00:20:24 My Conclusion/Insight00:21:49 CloseIf you enjoyed this episode you will enjoy these:https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMebuClQRf09d4cM9qYOC3I0X-PLxHWLO***LINKS***Tony Robbins & Alex Hormozihttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xz-ymFOhBAE&t=120s&pp=ygUZdG9ueSByb2JiaW5zIGFsZXggaG9ybW96aQ%3D%3DCan Breathwork Help Us Achieve Our Goals? | Ciaran Avitabile | Awaken Out Of Context Podcast | Ep 74https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4UqPhCihFQNewsletter signup: awakenoutofcontext.comJoin the indiip beta:indiip.com/beta15% Off Bare Bar (CODE: JASE):https://bit.ly/barejaseMY STUFF:awakenoutofcontext.comAwaken Out Of Context Podcast (YouTube & Podcast Links):https://bit.ly/3tk8FVvFollow Me On Instagram (@awakenoutofjason):https://bit.ly/3RAkKQj
If you're a business owner who knows what to do but can't seem to do it, someone struggling with procrastination on the things that matter most, or a coach or creator battling self-doubt and fear of judgment - this conversation will give you practical tools to understand what's actually blocking you and how to shift it.Jack Tipper is an NLP Master Practitioner and business mindset coach who helps coaches and entrepreneurs break through subconscious blockers that keep them stuck. After years of struggling with anxiety, people-pleasing, and needing external validation, Jack discovered neuro-linguistic programming and rebuilt his own identity from the inside out. Through his Limitless coaching program, he helps clients close the gap between where they are and where they want to be - not through motivation, but by rewiring the beliefs that are running the show.In this episode, you'll learn:-Why procrastination isn't a laziness or time management issue - it's a symptom of deeper fears including fear of failure, judgment, and even fear of success-What NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) actually is and how your internal language shapes your identity, emotions, and external reality-How to spot subconscious blockers in high performers - the telltale signs someone is standing in their own way, even when they have the strategy and knowledge to succeed-Why "just do it" advice fails most people and what actually works - shifting your perspective first so the action becomes 100x easier-The courage to be disliked - why letting go of other people's opinions is one of the most powerful things you can do for your business and content-How micro decisions like putting the pasta packet in the bin build a chain reaction of discipline that bleeds into bigger actions-Why inaction between coaching sessions destroys self-trust and how the "continual push" is the prerequisite for lasting transformationThis conversation includes a live coaching moment where Jack identifies a limiting belief in real time - and the uncomfortable truth about why some clients don't get results.Chapters00:00:00 Trailer 00:00:49 Welcome, Background & Avoiding Clichés00:07:29 Beliefs & Identity Beneath Positive Thinking00:15:26 NLP & Why We Procrastinate00:28:10 Client Results & Self-Belief (Sophie Jones)00:34:24 Talent vs Discipline & Personal Brand in the AI Era00:41:40 Courage to Be Disliked, ‘Cringe’ Post & Live Coaching00:56:03 Pre-Breakthrough Signs & Drinking Choices01:05:23 When Coaching Stalls: Fear, Doubt & Inaction01:09:27 90-Second Message: Awareness, Basics & Next Step01:13:08 Action Over Entertainment & Micro-Wins01:18:04 Where to Find Jack & OutroIf you enjoyed this episode you will enjoy these:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5j4vnr_Xa3k&list=PLMebuClQRf08P0UXfiilUCQA9YN8m951D***LINKS***Jack Tipper Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jacktipper_coach/Jack Tipper LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jack-tipper-b46a3a117/Sophie Jones Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/soph.jones__/NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) - Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuro-linguistic_programmingNewsletter signup: awakenoutofcontext.comJoin the indiip beta:indiip.com/beta15% Off Bare Bar (CODE: JASE):https://bit.ly/barejaseMY STUFF:awakenoutofcontext.comAwaken Out Of Context Podcast (YouTube & Podcast Links):https://bit.ly/3tk8FVvFollow Me On Instagram (@awakenoutofjason):https://bit.ly/3RAkKQj

Last week I had an absolute disaster at HYROX London. It was my first Pro race in almost two years. I figured that, since I was going to have this conversation with my coach, Paddy Maher, it might be interesting for you guys to listen in on the sorts of things we chat about when looking to improve HYROX times. We took a deep dive into the different stations, weaknesses, strengths, and stats from the day. We looked at what exactly went wrong, whether my approach to pacing with heart rate was optimal, and whether it was a good idea or not to go to the cinema beforehand. We also talked about whether I’m simply fighting genetics with HYROX Pro and if I should even continue in this weight class. We explored why, despite feeling the strongest I’ve ever felt going into a competition, I struggled so much on the sled pull, and what we’ll do differently next time. Plus, we discussed some of the strategies we’re going to put in place to improve for my next HYROX Pro race.I’m hoping that, if you’re in a similar position to me and looking to improve your HYROX time, you’ll take some insights from this chat and hopefully feel a bit less alone if you’ve been struggling with similar things. Please enjoy this conversation with Paddy Maher.#hyrox #coaching #hyroxlondon Sign up to indiip for free at indiip.com/podcastIf you liked this episode, I’ve curated a list of episodes similar here:https://studio.youtube.com/playlist/PLMebuClQRf0-w8w31XGwd4r2JIkuq-Vw9/videosFully Timestamped Chapter List00:00:00 Intro & Pre-Race Expectations00:00:45 Race Plan, Warm-Up & Heart-Rate Strategy00:06:22 Splits Review & Pacing Across Stations00:10:30 Lunges Hamstring Tweak & Wall Balls Struggle00:15:36 Priority Fixes: Sled Pull, Lunges, Wall Balls & Burpees00:19:51 Pro vs Open: Motivation & Goals00:26:10 Training–Life Balance, Recovery & Late Race Timing00:33:21 Season Timing, Redemption & Heart-Rate Strategy00:45:59 Aerobic Base: Bike & Building Volume00:50:03 Run Volume, Social Runs & Weekly Structure (Stockholm Plans)00:53:13 Closing & Coach Links***LINKS***Paddy’s Websitehttps://bit.ly/4g55IvPPaddy’s Instagramhttps://bit.ly/4g9AXGchttps://www.instagram.com/industry13sf/?hl=enJoin the indiip beta:indiip.com/beta15% Off Bare Bar (CODE: JASE):https://bit.ly/barejaseMY STUFF:awakenoutofcontext.comAwaken Out Of Context Podcast (YouTube & Podcast Links):https://bit.ly/3tk8FVvFollow Me On Instagram (@awakenoutofjason):https://bit.ly/3RAkKQj

If you're someone who's ever cringed at the sound of your own voice, felt judged for using "like" or "um," or wondered why certain accents feel more credible than others - this conversation will help you understand the hidden forces shaping how we communicate and how to use your voice with confidence instead of shame.Valerie Fridland is a professor of linguistics at the University of Nevada, Reno, and author of Like, Literally, Dude: Arguing for the Good in Bad English. With decades of research into how language actually works in the real world, she's dedicated to dismantling the myths and judgments we carry about speech patterns. Through accessible science and cultural analysis, Valerie helps people understand that the vocal habits they've been told to eliminate are often markers of connection, adaptability, and social intelligence. In this episode, you'll learn:Why vocal fry, uptalk, and filler words like "um" and "like" serve powerful communication functions - and what they actually signal to listenersHow accent bias and language policing create hierarchies that have nothing to do with clarity or intelligenceThe psychological reasons we hate hearing our own voices on recordings - and what this reveals about self-perceptionWhy younger generations adopt certain speech patterns as markers of identity, empathy, and in-group belongingHow to reframe your relationship with your voice by understanding the difference between linguistic evolution and actual communication problemsPractical ways to speak with authority and confidence without erasing the natural patterns that make you relatableThis conversation includes real examples of how speech patterns shift across generations, regions, and social contexts - helping you see your voice as a tool for connection rather than a source of insecurity.#linguistics #professor #accents Sign up to indiip for free at indiip.com/podcastFully Timestamped Chapter List00:00:00 Valerie Fridland: Changing Accents, Authenticity, Hiring Bias, Chris Williamson & Comprehension 00:12:20 New Book on Accents & Why ‘Moist’ Sounds Unpleasant 00:21:08 Backchannels, Podcaster Tics & Self-Monitoring 00:28:07 The Many Meanings of ‘Like’ 00:33:11 Status & Prestige, Vocabulary, Audiobooks vs Reading 00:44:44 Improving Speech: Analyse Your Habits, Not ‘Diction’ 00:49:28 Favourite Words: ‘Cellar Door’, Sonority & the Many ‘R’s 00:54:09 Proto-languages, Jaws, Muffled Speech & Prenatal Hearing 01:00:44 Closing ThoughtsIf you liked this episode, you might like these too:https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMebuClQRf0_uXZRSNrXYQ9Wgp-Zk-0yk***LINKS***https://www.valeriefridland.com/Join the indiip beta:indiip.com/beta15% Off Bare Bar (CODE: JASE):https://bit.ly/barejaseMY STUFF:Awaken Out Of Context Podcast (YouTube & Podcast Links):https://bit.ly/3tk8FVvFollow Me On Instagram (@awakenoutofjason):https://bit.ly/3RAkKQj
