Description

Most self-help advice is guesswork dressed up as wisdom. We dig into psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral science to find what actually changes lives.

WHY LISTEN?

Over 8 million downloads because we answer the questions that matter: How do I build mental strength? What creates lasting motivation? How can I understand my own mind well enough to work with it, not against it?

This podcast is for curious skeptics who want frameworks backed by psychology studies, not Instagram quotes. Whether you're navigating procrastination, building self-discipline, or designing your own philosophy for a life well lived—we explore the hidden psychology behind real change.

WHAT YOU'LL GET

Mental models and simple techniques from cognitive psychology, positive psychology, and ancient wisdom traditions like Stoicism and Buddhism.

Being a human can be confusing, learning about it doesn’t have to be.

We cover everything from emotional intelligence and habit formation to brain health and the nervous system.

WHAT YOU DON’T GET

No pseudoscience. No oversimplified "hacks." No hustle porn.

Just practical insights on mindset improvement, self-development, and human psychology that respect your intelligence and mental health.

THE APPROACH

Instead of telling you what to think, we explore how thinking works. Armed with psychology studies, social science research, and relentless curiosity, we uncover the mechanics of belief change, attitude change, and personal development.

Success is personal. You might want to leverage your neurodiverse strengths, build a business, or simply discover how to be happier. We provide the mental frameworks to pursue your definition of success with mental strength and self-care that fits your life.

YOUR HOST

I'm Sam Webster Harris—a lifelong learner with ADHD and an obsession with finding answers to hard questions. After launching businesses, traveling the world, and nearly dying a few times, I concluded that psychology and science are where real wisdom lives.

This show is my excuse to dive deep into health and fitness research, behavioral psychology, and cool science while helping you build genuine self-discipline and motivation.

A life is brief. An idea can travel further than its inventor ever will. What determines which ones last? We follow life’s story from the first organisms to the systems we build today, using three laws of biology as a lens: competition, selection and reproduction. These aren’t just rules for animals in a nature documentary. They also help us think about innovation, businesses, beliefs and the ambitions that shape our own lives. Seen this way, success isn’t simply being clever or working harder. An idea must meet a real need, adapt when its environment changes, and find a way to continue beyond its creator. That doesn’t make the future predictable. It makes it more open: if survival depends partly on fit, then changing the idea—or the conditions around it—can change what becomes possible. Notice which assumptions your environment is rewarding—and which it is quietly discarding. Make room for variation before committing everything to one solution. Ask how your idea can remain useful when you are no longer there to carry it. Listen with curiosity, then consider what you could create that others might adapt, share and carry forward. It's easy to spend our lives defending a story about who we are, instead of finding out who we could become. This episode is an invitation to stop protecting your ego and start practising self-awareness as a craft. We look at how high intelligence can turn into a sophisticated self-deception machine, and how the stories we tell ourselves—“I’m the rational one”, “I learn from feedback”, “I’m different from those stubborn people”—are often the very things that keep us stuck. Through real examples from science, travel, and building (and misbuilding) companies, you’ll see how ego hides in certainty, and how growth begins the moment you allow yourself to be wrong on purpose. This is about a shift in identity, from someone who must be right to someone who is willing to see. Identify three recurring patterns where your ego resists uncomfortable truths. Create a regular “ego audit” ritual: write, reflect, and invite honest feedback. Choose relationships and environments that reward curiosity over confidence. Hit play if you’re ready to trade the comfort of being right for the possibility of becoming wiser. The peculiar thing about attention deficit is that everybody seems to have it these days, whether they've earned it through proper diagnosis or simply absorbed it from an enthusiastic TikTok video filmed in someone's bathroom. What I've learned, from my own escapades, and partly through reading Peter Shankman's excellent book Faster Than Normal, is that whatever your brain does, you need to learn how to drive it. This conversation covers the four rules Shankman uses to turn a supposedly defective brain into rather useful equipment, none of which involve medication or particularly virtuous behaviour. Structure your environment so willpower becomes optional Eliminate choice wherever possible — routine isn't boring, it's protective Exercise before you need focus, not after you've lost it Work with your strengths, delegate the rest SPONSORS ☺️ MOD.com Prescription Modafinil for energy and focus. Train your brain to resist distraction, form your own opinions, and think like an intellectual. When every answer is one click away, we’ve forgotten how to enjoy the struggle of figuring things out. This episode explores the radical act of thinking more slowly in a fast-paced world. Modern life has made us intellectual snackers: we graze on headlines, notifications, and other people’s opinions until our minds feel full on intellectual candy floss. Drawing on ideas from Cal Newport, Charlie Munger, and curious historical figures, we unpack why boredom, better information, and stronger memory are the unsung heroes of clear thinking. You’ll learn: How to design an information diet that actually feeds your brain How to become comfortable enough with silence to let your own ideas emerge How to train your attention so it doesn’t sprint away at the first ping. You don't need to turn into a monk, but hopefully this is a gentle nudge to think with more depth, nuance, and independence. Have you ever wonder if the thing keeping you stuck is yourself? Invisible rules your brain runs on that you have no choice over... In this episode, we go inside guided psilocybin retreats to see how people actually change deep mental patterns. As they say the “trip” is only the start. We talk with Gabriel Charalambides, founder of Odyssey, about what happens in the brain during these experiences: the default mode network quiets down, old self-stories lose their grip, and the mind becomes unusually open to new connections. But the real work shows up afterwards, in the quiet days of writing, reflection, and small experiments that turn a powerful experience into lasting change. We also cover who these retreats help, who they don’t, and why integration matters more than most people think. Understand how psychedelics can temporarily loosen rigid thought patterns Learn why post-experience integration is where real change happens See the limits and risks so you can think clearly about your own path If you’ve ever felt stuck in the same mental loops, this conversation might give you a new map for getting out.
