Welcome to episode 42 of The GenX Experience. Today, we continue our conversation on beauty over 40 with my guest, and fellow Gen Xer, Amy Stone. In this compelling episode, my guest and I chat about the evolving perceptions of beauty over the decades, the pressure of beauty standards from our youth in the 80s and 90s, how we're dealing with those pressures today, the impact of media and technology on self-image, and the journey towards embracing aging with grace. In a world obsessed with youth, we’re tackling beauty and aging in GenX style, with personal stories, experiences, and insights only our generation can share. Amy also shares the why behind her podcast Imperfect Adulting, a space where real people share real stories about the everyday choices that shape a life. Guest Info: Amy StoneAmy Stone is a media entrepreneur, storyteller, and founder of The Art of Imperfect Adulting - a growing media platform featuring long-form interviews that explore the messy, non-linear reality of building a life.Amy is a journalism graduate who started her career as a freelance newspaper photographer.  Driven by the desire to be able to pay her bills she took a job in marketing and later client service at a tech startup in the late '90s before building multiple businesses of her own - including an award-winning family portrait studio she ran for 8 years. After closing the studio and moving through fitness and lifestyle coaching, she realized the work that mattered most wasn't offering her own expertise - it was creating a space where real people share real stories about the everyday choices that shape a life. The Art of Imperfect Adulting sits in the space between curated social media perfection and sensationalized life implosions. Amy focuses on the unglamorous, relatable decisions we all face - career pivots, relationship negotiations, identity shifts, and the small choices that compound over time. Through conversations grounded in lived experience rather than advice or spectacle, she creates authentic connection that helps people feel less alone and more equipped to navigate their own paths.A seven-time Ironman finisher, mom, stepmom, and sourdough baker, Amy practices what she preaches: embracing the long game, learning through doing, and finding meaning in the journey rather than the destination. How to connect with Amy:Website: Imperfect AdultingImperfect Adulting Podcast: Spotify, Apple, and YouTubeLinkedIn: Amy StoneFacebook: Imperfect AdultingInstagram: The Heart of Imperfect Adulting TikTok: Imperfect AdultingWhere to buy the GenX Experience Book Club Pick: (Chat coming in December)A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'EngleIf you'd like to become a guest or share your input on future topics, you can reach out to me by:Instagram: ThegenxexperiencepodTikTok: ThegenxexperiencepodYouTube: The GenX Experience PodcastGuest Interest Sheet: The GenX Experience Guest ListWebsite: The GenX Experienceemail: blythealpern@wordwomancreative.comSend in a voice message

Join me for episode 41 of The GenX Experience Podcast, as we delve into the complexities of beauty and aging, sharing personal anecdotes and stories about how our perception of beauty evolves as we grow and age. We also discuss the pressures society places on women, the impact of the media, and the importance of embracing your unique journey. Then, we'll end the episode by hearing more about Caryl and Marilyn's experience having their own NBC sitcom and ABC talk show, as well as why they thought 30 years later was the perfect time to create a new stage show, The Mommies: Their LastTrimester. She is currently painting, growing flowers, and working on woodworking projects. She’s happy to be back in her happy place, helping other women laugh about their lives!Marilyn Kentz is an artist, author, comedian, grandmother, and all-around fearless woman. Kentz’ books include The Motherload, Not Your Mother’s Midlife, and Fearless Women. Her 2010 - 2014 stage show, “Will I Ever Wear a Bikini Again?” was a hit. In it, she explored the aging process, from the satisfaction of pulling that pesky chin hair to surviving the empty nest. Kentz reminded her audience, with hearty laughs and sighs of relief, that they are not alone. Show Info: The Mommies: Their Last TrimesterIn this effervescent, two-woman show, Caryl and Marilyn reflect on their accidental road to fame, and how easy it was to go down the Hollywood ladder. They bring to light the good, the bad, and the stupid, and how lost they were in the world of their NBC sitcom and ABC talk show. Now, 30 years later, the two former next-door neighbors are back on stage laughing about this new version of life as “Grand-Mommies.” They reveal their thoughts about aging in public, family, chin hairs, and anxiety over where to tap the credit card to finally hear the damn beep. Welcome back to the second part of our series on growing up Gen X with or without siblings. In today's episode (ep 32), I sit down with fellow GenXer Craig Fitzgerald to talk about what it was like growing up as an only child and how it shaped his views on the world as an adult. We also take a little detour into GenX music, what's it like caring for aging parents, and how GenX is aging differently than our parents' generation. Guest Info: Craig FitzgeraldCraig Fitzgerald is a writer and editor in the suburbs of Boston. He’s the automotive editor at Drive, with a focus on advanced safety and semi-autonomous technologies. This month, I'm talking to my fellow Gen Xers about growing up with siblings versus growing up as an only child. For this very special episode(ep 31) of The GenX Experience, I sat down with my brother and sister, Micah Alpern and Mandi Fridkin, to reminisce, share our unique perspectives on growing up together, and how we stay so close after all these years. In this solo episode 30, I'm reminiscing about Gen Xers' first foray into the corporate world, where we were told we didn't have enough experience to get the job. It didn't matter if you'd studied your field in college or at a trade school. You were young and, apparently, didn't know anything. Although we knew enough to know you can't get experience without a job. Ah, the good old days...when the world was your oyster, except was it? I also share some funny stories from my early ad agency days.
