On this short Interstitial episode, I riff on what’s been alive for me since my most recent conversations with Sophie Messager (on reclaiming drumming) and Ash Stinson (on embodiment and listening to the body). Jumping off from these dialogues, I'm holding a a central question here: How do we, as women, become truly free within systems that were never designed with us in mind?Key Points:My own understanding of liberation in three parts - awakening, reckoning with inequities, and consciously choosing how to operate within toxic systems, including determining how and when to withdraw consent What it means to awaken to the reality that most systems were built without the participation and input of womenThe importance of taking time moving through the emotions that arise - but also moving on when ready The tricky dance between participating in systems while you have to, while honestly assessing your available power to enact changeKey Questions to Consider: Am I waiting for permission to show up differently?Am I waiting for it to feel easy or comfortable before I follow my truth?Do I actually have more freedom and power than I’m giving myself credit for?If this podcast or my book Home to Her: Walking the Transformative Path of the Sacred Feminine has inspired you, don’t stop here. The Realms of Embodiment with Ash StinsonOn this episode – which has been in the making for a long time – Ash Stinson and I explore the profound themes of the sacred feminine, embodiment, and the intricate layers of wisdom held within our bodies. Ash is an energy worker, a creator, a deep feeler and a deep thinker, a parent, and an expert on healing through the energy of your anatomy.Ash's personal and professional life functionally revolves around one question: What gives us a sense of place? She studied and worked in Environmental Science, habitat preservation, and Landscape Architecture until her Saturn Return coupled with a twin pregnancy catapulted her into postpartum PTSD, and she finally got the cosmic memo – you can't create belonging in your backyard if you're lost in your own skin.A decade of study, Reiki Master level certification, apprenticeship with her ancestors, and a certification in Integrative Somatic Trauma Therapy later, Energy Archaeology and the Realms of Embodiment were born. Ash now spends her days exploring the energetic anatomy and morphology of the body, from the bones, muscles, fluid systems, organs, nervous system, and DNA and translating it so you can understand your mythosomatic self and belonging within the wider energetic fabric of life.We dive deep on this episode, exploring:·      Ash’s own personal and spiritual background, including the traumatic experience of her own birth and how it ultimately prepared her for the work she does now·      How the Realms of Embodiment – Ash’s current work – was born out of an initial exploration of Reiki following a challenging birth experience with her twins·      The different areas of the Realms of Embodiment, and what each has to teach us·      Why it’s not so simple to just “listen to your body”·      The “yes-and” approach to embracing the wisdom of energy medicine and Western medicine·      Ash’s simple, three-step process to begin listening to your own bodyShow Notes:You can learn more about Ash, the Realms of Embodiment and her Energy Archaeology deck at her website: https://ashleystinson.com/.✨ Explore. In this particularly rich conversation, I’m joined by Sophie Messager, author of the new book The Beat of Your Own Drum (Womancraft Publishing). A former reproductive physiologist with a PhD, Sophie traded her microscope for a medicine drum after experiencing the transformative power of an empowered birth. Her decade-long journey as a doula, birth educator, and author of Why Postnatal Recovery Matters deepened her exploration of the rhythms surrounding women’s transitions. Now a holistic life transition mentor, Sophie guides women through significant life thresholds – from birth to perimenopause and beyond. Her unique combination of scientific expertise and spiritual insight allows her to serve as a compassionate space holder for those seeking to harmonise their analytical and intuitive selves. On this episode we explore:The complex and intersecting themes of sacred feminine wisdomThe journey of reclaiming women's power, and the transformative role of drumming in spiritual practicesSophie’s personal experiences from her Catholic upbringing to her journey as a doula and holistic life transition mentorThe historical context of women's roles in drumming and spirituality, and how reclaiming this practice can be an essential step for women in owning their voices and power in a patriarchal society.Key TakeawaysSacred Feminine wisdom is applicable in all areas of life.Understanding women's power from a feminine lens is crucial, and women’s sacred stories can help us do this.Sophie fascinating journey from science to holistic practices, and how it demonstrates that we can hold space for both.Drumming can be a powerful tool for women's empowerment. While the history of women and drumming is often overlooked, it’s real – and your birthright to know about. While women often feel scared to drum due to ancestral trauma, trusting yourself is the key to spiritual growth and personal evolution.Creating your own drum can be a transformative experience – but you can also start with a storebought one. You don’t need lessons or a prescriptive path to start.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Sacred Feminine Wisdom03:05 Exploring the Journey of the Sacred Feminine05:21 Sophie Messager's Spiritual Background11:09 Reclaiming Spirituality Beyond Catholicism19:52 The Role of Birth and Death in Feminine Wisdom24:32 Embodying the Divine Feminine27:26 Navigating the Journey to Menopause28:24 Embracing Cycles and Rest30:25 The Journey to the Drum31:51 Drum Microdosing: A New Practice37:28 Reclaiming the Drum: Women's History42:42 The Power of Drumming in Birth49:40 Empowerment Through Intuition and Expression✨ Explore. Introducing The Interstitial: short episodes intended to explore the spaces in between the last episode and the next. My latest conversation with Danielle Dulsky got me thinking about two things: magic and purpose. Here I consider the role of magic in our lives, as well as what it means to lean into our singular purpose during times of chaos and change. Key Takeaways: Magic can empower us to co-create our lives. We control the stories we tell about our experiences.Reclaiming our relationship with magic is a deeply human and feminine act.In chaotic times, focus on what is yours to do.Purpose can manifest in various forms, not just one.Living with care and presence is sufficient. Our contributions are part of a larger narrative. The divine feminine operates in deep time and rhythms.Trusting our guidance is essential for personal growth.✨ Explore. On this episode, I’m joined again by Danielle Dulsky, a prior Home to Her guest, as we explore the themes of women's wisdom, the significance of fairy tales, and the role of storytelling in shaping our understanding of the world. Danielle’s new book, The Night House: Folklore, Fairy Tales, Rites, and Magick for the Wise and Wild, serves as a focal point for our discussion, as we consider the connection between creativity, magic, and the feminine experience. We also talk about the hidden and sometimes subversive power within fairy tales, the importance of shadow work, and how these stories can help us navigate the complexities of modern life. We also talk about why Danielle believes we each have one important thing to do in this lifetime, and why it’s so important to protect our creative potential in these uncertain times. As Danielle says, “we need to get weirder.”Key Takeaways·     Everything we know about power has been defined by cultural structures.·     Women's wisdom and power have been minimized and pushed underground.·     Fairy tales hold hidden wisdom and power for women.·     The Night House explores the connection between fairy tales and women's experiences.·     Stories can be a way to access and embody our full power.·     The structure of The Night House reflects a journey through shadow and light.·     Asking questions about stories reveals insights about our lives.·     The current cultural moment calls for a return to women's wisdom.·     Magic exists in subtle forms and is often dismissed in modern culture.·     Storytelling shapes our understanding of the world.·     Finding our purpose and protecting our creative potential are two of the most important things we can do during these uncertain times·     Embracing our own weirdness is the key to coming up with new solutions for all the challenges facing usSound bites"Fairy tales hold hidden wisdom and power for women.""Storytelling shapes our understanding of the world.""Embrace the weirdness of life."Chapters00:00 Introduction to the Sacred Feminine03:01 Exploring Women's Wisdom and Power05:52 The Night House: Unveiling Fairy Tales08:44 The Structure of The Night House11:36 Shadow Work and Fairy Tales14:03 Connecting Stories to Personal Experience17:02 The Importance of Timing in Storytelling19:34 The Role of Magic in Our Lives25:38 The Compartmentalization of Magic31:58 Exploring the Realm of Magic35:55 Tending to Our Unique Purpose41:01 The Power of Storytelling45:51 Embracing the Weirdness of LifeIf this podcast or my book Home to Her: Walking the Transformative Path of the Sacred Feminine has inspired you, don’t stop here. In this conversation, Dr. Lisette Ostrander and I explore the intricate relationship between feminine wisdom, sexuality, and pleasure. We also talk about the cultural narratives surrounding women's sexuality, the importance of creating safe spaces for exploration, and the need to reclaim pleasure as a vital aspect of life. Key Takeaways:* Feminine power includes the ability to celebrate and sustain life, along with the ability to access deep wisdom found within the body * Cultural structures have historically excluded women's input on power* Embodied wisdom teaches us about pleasure and connection.* Sex and pleasure are integral to understanding feminine wisdom.* Cultural narratives often vilify women's sexuality and pleasure and have done so for a great deal of recorded history.* Creating safe spaces is essential for exploring sexuality.* Eroticism is about seeking pleasure for its own sake.* Life experiences significantly impact sexual experiences.* Women often face challenges related to desire and intimacy.* Self-exploration and understanding one's body are crucial for empowerment.Chapters00:00 Introduction to the Sacred Feminine03:22 Exploring Feminine Power06:39 The Journey of Sexuality and Pleasure11:50 Cultural Influences on Sexuality18:22 The Complexity of Women’s Sexual Experiences23:32 The Intersection of Life and Sexuality29:34 The Role of Safety in Sexual Encounters35:38 Challenges Women Face in Sexuality40:03 Men's Perspectives on Sexuality47:28 Empowering Women to Explore Their Sexuality51:31 Practical Steps to Embrace Sexual Pleasure57:04 New podcast outro 062625 - 6:26:25, 5.23 PM.mp3Notes about this episode: * Lisette and I referred to the Home to Her podcast episode, Becoming a Land Steward with Belinda Liu: https://player.captivate.fm/episode/68a392e1-b9c3-4b9c-9a70-5aa9994ad55c* We also discussed the Hestia retreat centers - you can learn more about them here: https://www.hestiamagic.com/ * I referenced the virgin-whore dichotomy so many women face; you can find a description of this here: https://www.modernintimacy.com/the-psychology-of-the-madonna-whore-complex/* Lisette referenced the work of sex and relationship therapist Esther Perel. My latest guest, H. Byron Ballard, joins me on this episode for her second visit to the Home to Her podcast. Byron is a ritualist, teacher, gardener, and author of multiple books, including "Staubs and Ditchwater: A Friendly and Useful Introduction to Hillfolks’ Hoodoo;" "Earthworks: Ceremonies in Tower Time;" "Seasons of a Magical Life;" and the forthcoming "Feral Church." Byron is also a senior priestess and co-founder of the Mother Grove Goddess Temple, a nonprofit church with a focus on the many forms of the divine feminine. On this episode we discuss: What it means to live in deep relationship to place - both the gifts and the challenges How the work and the death of the late thealogian Dr. Carol P. Christ inspired Byron's forthcoming book, Feral Church, and why she feels it's so important that we have new books of thealogy (spelling intentional) that celebrate the GoddessWhy it's important that we understand that the Goddess and her many incarnations represent much more than patriarchally lauded values such as softness and femininity, but also ferocity and immense power. The linkage between the concept of begin feral and the Divine Feminine. The need for "hearth church" and other homegrown, emergent practices for engaging with the sacred that can continue to exist and flourish as patriarchal systems crumble around us Notes related to this episode: You can learn more about Byron at her website, https://www.myvillagewitch.com/.You can also find her on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/byron.ballar..., and on Instagram: @byronballard5789Byron discussed the late Carol P. Annalisa completed her doctorate in Mythological Studies with Emphasis in Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute. She also holds a BA in Theater with specialized training in masked and physical theater from international master teachers in Italy, India, and NYC. Annalisa's work explores the impact that negative cultural menstrual “myths” have on women, which her forthcoming book will explore in more detail. Annalisa offers an affirming alternative in the form of an ancient myth, “The Descent of Inanna,” which she re-visions as a sacred menstrual narrative and ritual rite-of-passage.During this episode we discuss: Annalisa's experience growing up in a Lutheran church, including the connection she made later between devotional Christian hymns and the Bhakti yoga traditionThe near total erasure of the Sacred Feminine in Protestantism, and why discovering Her can feel like such a revelation for many of usHow discovering Mary Magdalene sparked Annalisa's ongoing journey to the Goddess and led her to her current researchWhat Annalisa refers to as the menstrual mysteries, and how the Inanna myth teaches us about them and the nature of the Goddess Herself - as a gateway through the lessons of birth, death, and rebirthAnnalisa's pending move to Greece and her vision for supporting the reemergence of the Sacred Feminine in patriarchal strongholds And a bonus - Annalisa becomes the third guest in the history of the show to bring me to tears (in a really good way)! Say Wow with Chelan Harkin

2024-06-0601:00:35

On this episode I'm so honored to be joined by the poet Chelan Harkin. Chelan's poetry journey began at age 21 on the heels of a traumatic event, a mystical event and an unparalleled creative opening where inspired verse started to pour through her with very little need for editing. Her experience with channeling the muse was profound and intimate but also quite private. It took Chelan 12 years to find the courage to share her poetry with the world through her first self-published book, "Susceptible to Light". This publishing journey that began at the end of 2020 has been something of a magic carpet ride characterized by prayer experiments gone right and has included some of the most awe-inspiring events that have completely shifted Chelan’s way of relating to herself and the world. Her current published books include "Susceptible to Light", "Let Us Dance: The Stumble and Whirl with The Beloved", "Wild Grace" and "The Prophetess: The Return of The Prophet from The Voice of The Divine Feminine". On the latest episode we discuss:* How a brain tumor and a subsequent pilgrimage inspired by her Baha'i faith led to a spiritual awakening for Chelan at age 21, which included an influx of divinely inspired poetry * How Chelan experiences her creative inspiration as a flow of energy that offers tremendous insight and wisdom* The generative nature of suffering, and why she feels like suffering is simply "energy that hasn't been brought back into the fold of love" * Chelan's incredible publishing journey, which was presided over by two of her favorite dead poets, Hafez and Khalil Gibran* Plus, she reads the first poem that ever flowed through her, "Say Wow" Here are a few notes related to this episode:* You can follow Chelan on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/chani.harkin/.
