Description

The Local Spotlights podcast belongs to Part Three of "Looking North": a series of conversations with artists, nature writers, and ecological initiatives in Scotland and beyond which explore landscape, nature and energy in a way that moves beyond mainstream conventions. Part Three focuses specifically on care, healing and regeneration to broaden our understanding of what it means to connect, relate and take positive environmental action. Over the course of five episodes, we are joined by a selection of people and projects from Fife and Dundee in Scotland, who share their insights and perspectives with us.

What is the role of a Botanic Garden in the wake of the ecological crisis? Our guest in this episode is Dr. Harry Watkins, a landscape architect and the Executive Director at the St Andrews Botanic Garden. He speaks to us about some of the changes and projects he has introduced at the St Andrews Botanic Garden, his vision for its future, the importance of community engagement and increasing the accessibility of gardening as a form of engaging in care, healing and regeneration.Looking North is funded by the St Andrews Centre for Energy Ethics, the Scotland's Future Series, and the St Andrews Centre for Contemporary Art.Production: James Crooks (Centre for Energy Ethics)Host: Anne DaffertshoferSong: WoodsMusic composed and recorded by Oak Studios.Link:    • [No Copyright Music] Woods - Acoustic...   | Creative Commons - Attribution ND 4.0 Hosted on Acast. In this episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with Connie Hunter, the co-founder and owner of East Neuk Market Garden: a 4-acre agroecological farm growing vegetables, salads, herbs, and fruits in the East Neuk of Fife. She tells us about the journey that led her and her partner, Tom, to start East Neuk Market Garden. We also discuss what drew them to agroecological farming practices, and how growing food links to both public and environmental health, as well as our sense of place and community. Looking North is funded by the St Andrews Centre for Energy Ethics, the Scotland's Future Series, and the St Andrews Centre for Contemporary Art.Production: James Crooks (Centre for Energy Ethics)Host: Anne DaffertshoferSong: WoodsMusic composed and recorded by Oak Studios.Link:    • [No Copyright Music] Woods - Acoustic...   | Creative Commons - Attribution ND 4.0 Hosted on Acast. For the first episode, we were joined by Dr. Roxani Krystalli, an academic at the University of St Andrews, a peace-builder, writer and storyteller. Roxani speaks about how we can relate to nature and place and grow roots despite living lives that can feel busy, and sometimes quite transient. And we also explore how doing so can be a form of practising care, healing and regeneration.Looking North is funded by the St Andrews Centre for Energy Ethics, the Scotland's Future Series, and the St Andrews Centre for Contemporary Art.Production: James Crooks (Centre for Energy Ethics)Host: Anne DaffertshoferSong: WoodsMusic composed and recorded by Oak Studios.Link:    • [No Copyright Music] Woods - Acoustic...   | Creative Commons - Attribution ND 4.0 Hosted on Acast.
