ABOUT THIS EPISODE: Ep 11 Being Diagnosed with an Unpopular Cancer – there is no t-shirt for meWhen you add up the 4 most commonly diagnosed cancers breast, lung, prostate and colorectal, they still only make up around half of all cancer types diagnosed around the world. Leaving many people diagnosed with a less common or rare cancer. There is already enough potential baggage that comes with a cancer diagnosis, but for many it can be exponentially worse when they are diagnosed with a rare cancer or diagnosed with cancer in a body part that isn’t comfortable talking about. This can lead to silence, feelings of abandonment, shame, guilt and blank stares. And none of that is ok. In this episode of The Recovery Room Podcast we talk with a woman who has dealt with all of this after being diagnosed with a cancer, that not only is less than 1% of all cancers, it happened in a body part that can be a bit cringy to talk about. This insightful episode 11 conversation is dedicated to the millions of people diagnosed with the rarer cancers. You may feel alone, but please know you aren’t! ABOUT THE RECOVERY ROOM PODCAST: The Recovery Room Podcast discusses all things cancer recovery. ABOUT THIS EPISODE: Ep 9: We discuss how to have a positive mindset in the midst of extreme trauma and distress, as well as where is the line when a positive attitude turns into toxic positivity. For those facing a cancer diagnosis, treatment, and or recovery, a positive mindset can be incredibly helpful, because no matter how bad things get you need to find a way to be in the emotion and trauma, yet then find a way to move through it and then past it as best possible. But how are you supposed to do that? what exactly is a positive mindset and how do you get one? And when does a helpful, positive mindset turn into toxic positivity? Welcome to episode 9 of the recovery room podcast because this is what we are discussing. Back by popular demand we are bringing back to the show mindset specialist and cancer survivor Kimberly Macon. We discuss, what positive mindset is, where and how it is helpful and also where the line is when positivity can become toxic. Kimberly will give us the tips and tools of mindset to not eliminate hardship, but to better cope with it when it happens.ABOUT THE RECOVERY ROOM PODCAST: The Recovery Room Podcast discusses all things cancer recovery. Ep 6: Lymphedema Risk Reduction: yes, you can get a blood pressure on that armABOUT THIS EPISODE:There is no compelling evidence that blood pressures or blood draws in your involved arm increases your risk of getting lymphedema. It's true. Research has evolved over the years, changing the way we understand lymphedema risk and practice. Yet sometimes it takes a while for the accuracy to filter through the health care and survivors realms. This is certainly true for cancer related lymphedema precautions. Data now tell us that sitting on the couch will not protect you, taking it easy will not protect you, and lifting weights won’t increase your risk for lymphedema, it will actually decrease your risk! There are about 600 lymph nodes in the human body and what moves lymphatic fluid through the system is muscle contractions, movement of the body part, increased breathing rate and increased heart rate… so let’s get you moving. Listen in to this episode as we discuss the evidence based ways to protect yourself from Lymphedema and debunk the old, outdated precautions.ABOUT THE RECOVERY ROOM PODCAST: The Recovery Room Podcast discusses all things cancer recovery. ABOUT THIS EPISODE: Remember the 1991 mega hit Let’s talk about sex by salt n Pepa? “Don't decoy, avoid, or make void the topic, Let's talk about sex.”Welcome to the Recovery Room Podcast and yes Salt and Pepa, that is what we are going to do. More specifically we’ll talk about how sex and sexual health may be impacted by cancer. We will define the differences between emotional intimacy and physical intimacy, and an individual’s sexuality and sexual health…because all of this may be negatively and perhaps profoundly impacted by cancer: pain from surgery or radiation, fatigue, missing body parts, emotional changes, hormonal changes, changes in desire, changes in relationships, changes in body composition, hair loss, pelvic floor, erectile dysfunction. It is a huge issue!I welcome you to our conversation today. We are joined by Erin Sullivan Wagner, a cancer sexual health specialist and certified coach. After being diagnosed with anal cancer Erin experienced long-lasting sexual health side effects from her cancer treatment. After receiving little to no help from her care team Erin made a life-long commitment to help cancer patients and provide the support she never received.
