What is evil? Some folks see it as a supernatural force from the devil, whose demonic army rises from the pits of hell to influence and possess, and that only religion and church can stop this demonic force. But in reality, sometimes it’s the ones that profess to love God who are the evil ones, and those that hail Satan who are the innocent and good. Today we bring you a story of a professor and scholar, a doctor of neuroscience who stole enough CIA donated LSD to get a town high, and went to the forest to practice Satanism, but it wasn’t the devil that came to slay him and his lover, it was something much more benign and common place. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome back to Part Two of the Many Tentacled Enigma of Karla Homolka! Like last week, today Matthew is joined by the lovely Cassandra, aka Malformed Malcontent, Christa will be back with us next week. As we examine the complicity of Karla Homolka in the notorious Ken and Barbie abductions, murders and rapes, we’ve studied her ancestry and childhood, catching glimpses of the monster that she’d become sprout from a strange Barbie-obsessed child who was a compulsive liar with a morbid cruel streak, to a gifted student with an IQ of 134, and go from a Goth, death-obsessed rebel teen, into a preppy, wannabe yuppie young woman whose blooming hybristophilia and nymphomania led to a passionate love affair with sexual sadist and rapist Paul Bernardo. The relationship, a perfect storm of psychopathy and sexual deviance, led to the death of Karla’s sister, whom she offered up as a Christmas present to her new boyfriend, as well as the abduction, brutal torture and murder of fourteen-year-old Leslie Mahaffy. Today we watch as Karla spreads her tentacles, the enigma taking on more forms, the next of which will be loving wife, as the Ken and Barbie killers, Karla and Paul, head to the wedding chapel. Today we begin a two-part deep dive into the life and psychology of the infamous Karla Homolka, the wicked witch of Ontario and the most hated woman in Canada, trying to ascertain just how complicit she was in the murders of Leslie Mahaffy and Kristen French, and could she have possibly been the ringleader and actual killer. Welcome back to part two of our portrait of literary outlaw William Burroughs. Last week we saw Burroughs go from a shy, introverted child, to a Harvard educated aspiring writer with a wife and child, who was also a petty criminal, drug fiend, heroin addict and proud homosexual with a long arrest record, who, with his friends Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg was forming a new bohemian culture and literary movement that would become defined as The Beat Generation. When we last left off Burroughs had fled the United States after getting busted for heroin in New Orleans and had just returned to his family in Mexico City after a fruitless trip in search of ayahuasca in the jungles of South America. Buckle up and enjoy the ride, as we bring you the second and final installment on our series of cultural icon, Godfather of Punk and Pope of Dope, William Burroughs, patron Saint of the Underground. Today we bring you a tale rife with murder and mayhem, but also something more. We present to you a portrait of an artist and writer, a literary provocateur and countercultural icon whose life and work defied all conventional boundaries: William S. Burroughs. The writing of this elder statesman of the beat generation would challenge societal conventions and shatter censorship laws with its vivid portrayal of taboo subjects such as drug addiction, violence and deviant sex, using a bizarre experimental style that defied narrative structure and explored the darker recesses of the human psyche. While he became a patron saint of the underground to many, deemed the Godfather of Punk and Pope of Dope, Burroughs lived a life marked by personal turmoil and tragedy, including murders, suicides, overdoses, addiction and psychosis. Together with his friends Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, they would create a literary movement that would define a generation with their masterpieces of beatnik literature, namely Kerouac’s On The Road, Ginsberg’s Howl and Burroughs’ Naked Lunch. Burroughs' legacy continues to inspire generations of writers, artists, and rebels, challenging us to question authority, embrace the unconventional, and explore the depths of human experience without fear or reservation. Murderous scumbag Lyndon McLeod found poetic justice on a Denver cross-roads when he came face to face with what he hated most in the world: a powerful and courageous woman. Lyndon McLeod was a product of Generation X culture in the late nineties and early 2000s, moving from a post-modern hippie commune to the medical-marijuana world to tattoos and the back-to-the-land and off-grid community, developing a toxic and deadly hatred for women and society along the way. This deadly misfit would explode from a mixture of stupidity and misogyny and take five lives, but justice would find him, literally and figuratively, in a most poetic way. In 1986 Tina Bowen and her best friend held a séance to contact Tina’s dead mother. Instead, they made contact with something much more terrifying than any ghost or demon, for within their very walls lurked a monster: a deeply disturbed rapist and murderer by the name of Daniel LaPlante who was haunting the family and literally living in their walls .   Daniel LaPlante is known today as “the boy in the walls,” and has become a sort of urban myth, but his story is very true, and much more horrific and disturbing than most realize. He did much more than just haunt the Bowen family and make their life hell, he would go on to commit a string of brutal and horrific crimes, and would hold siege over an entire town, resulting in the largest manhunt in the history of Townsend, Massachusetts.   Ladies and gentlemen, prepare for one of the strangest and most terrifying stories you’ve ever heard, so bizarre it’s passed from true crime reality and into the realm of urban myth and spooky legend: the story of Daniel LaPlante, a ghost in the walls.   Website: www.murdercoasterpodcast.com Facebook: Murder Coaster Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/murdercoasterpodcast/ Creepy Amusement Park theme by Brandon Fiechter and Derek Fiechter, used by permission and with many thanks.   References:   Phrogging: Hider in My House. New England in the 1800s was gripped with a vampire panic. Belief in the undead rising from their graves at night to feed off the living, spreading pestilence and disease, was rampant, and as families watched their children grow sickly and pale, struggling to breathe and withering away, they saw no choice but to seek out the offending creatures of the night, by digging up their corpses, hacking out their hearts and livers, burning them, and then consuming the ashes. It was seen as the only way to cure the affliction. In reality, tuberculosis was spreading throughout the small farms and villages, a disease that was then known as consumption, as it consumed one from the inside out. But before the concept of airborne germs spreading contagious disease was understood, villagers were marching out into the night with shovels in hand, and under the light of lanterns and torches, digging up the dead and desecrating their bodies in the hopes curing sick family members. How this ghoulish phenomenon became known to historians is an unsettling tale in itself. Today, ladies and gentlemen, we present to you haunting tales of New England Vampires, culminating in the most famous case of all, that of Mercy Lena Brown, a nineteen-year-old farm girl whose body was desecrated in the hopes of curing her brother from the vampire curse. The legend of Mercy Brown lives on so much so that her gravestone has been stolen and now must be guarded by police on Halloween night. Her story has inspired countless tales of horror, from H.P. Lovecraft and Bram Stroker to modern writers such as Paul Tremblay. But who was the real Mercy Brown? And what circumstances led to the disinterment of her corpse and the removal and cremation of her heart? Listen and find out! Learn the disturbing truth behind the Conjuring Haunting. There’s a legend of a murderous and devil-worshipping witch that once dwelled in Rhode Island in the early eighteen hundreds by the name of Bathsheba who sacrificed babies to Satan and whose ghost is said to haunt the land. The legend has become so pervasive that the Burrillville cemetery, where her grave is located, has become a tourist destination for the occult obsessed, some of whom have vandalized the grave and defaced the gravestone. And the real issue at hand, is that these myths and legends of a demonic witch who murdered children and inspired the Conjuring films, appear to be complete bullshit. These bizarre accusations and rumors didn’t even exist at all until the 1970s, a hundred and forty years after the death of the real Bathsheba. So how did an innocent woman become the subject of slander and urban myth? We'll lay it all out for you, ladies and gentlemen, as we bring you the legend of Bathsheba and truth behind the Conjuring Haunting.
