As RFN stands for Reel F**kin' Nightmares, expect a lot of swears and a lot of silly vulgar humour, but also expect a fun chat! Victor's previous film "Blood Gorge" was a retro slasher homage and a gory hoot, but his next feature, "Hellmare", looks to take his ambitions to a whole new level. Built off of an incredibly entertaining concept, as well as Gabriel's trademark gory hijinks and crass humour, I'm just foaming at the mouth to see this when it finally hits the big screen! This episode features a provocative discussion of the underrated Japanese director, Shinji Sōmai. I've got excellent film writer Jerry McGlothlin on to discuss his works and recurring themes. Starting off with his recently restored Typhoon Club, I was drawn to Sōmai's unique and meditative take on the harsh coming-of-age film. Turns out that's a constant mode for him, with other films like P.P. Rider, Sailor Suit & Machine Gun, and Moving all delivering their own stabs at that painful loss of innocence. Like Mike Leigh or RW Fassbinder strained through a DIY Dogme95 sensibility multiplied by queer punk rock urgency, Part 1 was 4+ hours of nuanced character studies that resonated in the most unflinching way. Louise is just about to film Part 2, so we dove into the whole universe she's been creating. We also recorded this the day of David Lynch's death, so we open with a touching tribute to this cinematic genius.
