Should an art class or art career always be competitive for young people? Does chasing an elusive dream of success truly lead us somewhere? Andrew shared one of the classes he designed—a collabo audio walk project about the Young Lords Organization, which emerged in 1969 in NYC. Could a class like this create meaningful change in the academic world? Can such an approach help break the culture of individualism? Guest speaker: Andrew Demirjian Andrew Demirjian builds linguistic, sonic and visual environments that disrupt habituated ways of reading, hearing and seeing. His interdisciplinary artistic practice examines structures that shape consciousness and perception, questioning frameworks that support the status quo and limit thought. Do artists need an MFA to start their careers? With more and more funding and grant opportunities stating, “Artists do not need a formal education to apply,” the degree has become less and less of a gatekeeper for artists. So, what are the pros and cons of art education? Listen to the thoughts of Professor Andrew Demirjian, who taught in an Integrated Media Arts program for ten years in the heart of New York City. Stunned by my first visit to Prime Produce 2 years ago, Prime Produce has continued to thrive and create cultural impact in Midtown New York, Hell’s Kitchen. It is a community event space, library, material bank, co-working space, and much more to come. Board director Yuko told me: "When it comes to running a cooperative, instead of looking for like-minded people, look for people with different perspectives. We can grow our perspectives together and challenge ourselves." David, who is a key member of Prime Produce, introduced me to their collaborative ecosystem and the projects they’ve done in the building. From the Upper West Side of New York, staring into the river, all the way walking to Straus Park on W 107th St, accompanied by Megan Hattie Stahl's sound walk Serious Music with Bea Witkin, I got to know the electronic composer Bea, who was born in 1916 and active in the 1930s until her death in 1990. Her personal life, struggles, and the unforgettable music she created all intertwined with the New York Upper West Side landscape—traffic passing, people walking by. The work stays, and so does the legacy of a woman fighting for her work to be seen and heard. And so do we. Serious Music with Bea Witkin has a soft launch coming soon on Dec13 -Dec15, sign up to the remarkable unique experience: http://Bit.ly/seriousmusicpreview Serious Music with Bea Witkin is a site-specific audio walk on New York City’s Upper West Side. This immersive musical documentary explores and extends the life and work of composer Beatrice Witkin (1916-1990). Across four stationary chapters and three walking interludes, participants follow a one-mile route from Riverside Park to Straus Park by way of Witkin’s longtime West End Avenue residence. Through guided narration, archival music, interviews and recordings of contemporary musicians sight-reading a 1985 composition by Witkin, Serious Music invites listeners to consider where music comes from, begins and ends.  Megan Hattie Stahl is a media artist & educator based in New York City by way of Oregon and Paris. She produces place-based, multi-sensory documentary audio projects, often investigating musical histories, realities & possibilities. website: meganhattiestahl.com email: meganhstahl@gmail.com ins: @megan__hattie Song Credit: ''Cantillations of the Bible for String Quartet'' courtesy of Steve Witkin Listening to Current Art Podcast: https://linktr.ee/Current.Artpodcast Email: current.artpodcast@gmail.com New Episode every Sunday at 10 AM EST —————————————————— Contact the host - Yaching Cheung Website: https://yachingcheung.com/ Email: art.yachingcheung@gmail.com ————————————————————————— #soundwalk#beatricewitkin#electronicmusic#composer#femalecomposer#artyoutuber #art #artpodcast #currentartpodcast #artwork #modernart #artistlife #artist #artistssupportingartists #podcast #podcaster #creativeprocess #newyorkcity #VisualArtsInspiration #CreativeProcess #InspiringArtists #ArtWorldInsights #ArtistsChallenges #ValueInCreativity #CreativeIndustryLife #InspireCreativity #ArtistsSupportingArtists #artisticinspiration#artisticinspiration

How should we best support our artists? Is guaranteed income a possible future for them? Have you heard of programs like this? This week’s guest, Kara Fan, is an artist who received $1,000 per month for 18 consecutive months from Creatives Rebuild New York during the post-pandemic era. She’s one of 2,400 artists in New York State who have benefited from this program. It’s a game-changer, inviting us to imagine the possibility which artists are having a relative financially stablized future . Kara Fan: (they/she) is a 1st-generation Chinese-American artist born and raised in New Jersey, now based in  Queens where their maternal side settled in the late-80s. Navigating their practice in this late capitalist hellscape has been as much of a nightmare as it’s been a delight, but now they want out. With the support from CRNY, Kara co-founded F234 Film Productions, which has allowed them to delve deeper into themes of healing, health, and agency. Additionally their involvement with the Ain’t I A Woman?! Campaign has further fueled their commitment to labor justice. To support their film work, go to https://ko-fi.com/f234filmproduction // To support the new labor movement and get involved, go to www.aintiawoman.org Episode supported by Creative Rebuild NY: CRNY is a three-year, $125 million investment in the financial stability of New York State artists and the organizations that employ them. CRNY provides guaranteed income and employment opportunities for 2,700 artists whose primary residence is in New York State. These two programs work to alleviate unemployment of artists, continue the creative work of artists in partnership with organizations and their communities, and enable artists to continue working and living in New York State under less financial strain. https://www.creativesrebuildny.org/ New Episode every Sunday at 10 AM EST —————————————————— Contact the host - Yaching Cheung Website: https://yachingcheung.com/ Email: art.yachingcheung@gmail.com ————————————————————————— #CRNY#guaranteedincome#financialstability#culture#beinganartist #artyoutuber #art #artpodcast #currentartpodcast #artwork #modernart #artistlife #artist #artistssupportingartists #podcast #podcaster #creativeprocess #newyorkcity #VisualArtsInspiration #CreativeProcess #InspiringArtists #ArtWorldInsights #ArtistsChallenges #ValueInCreativity #CreativeIndustryLife #InspireCreativity #ArtistsSupportingArtists #artisticinspiration

(Im)migration is what Ali said it to me during this week's episode. Ali is an artist, writer, professor originally from Iran and lives in the USA for over a decade. He works with Farsi language and playing with how to break the literal meaning of language. I saw a sense of fluidity in his work and his life, as many immigrants can reasonate with. Ali and I also talked about: what makes the best ''soil'' for migration. And the fun moment of ordering in starbuck coffee and give up your maternal name and see what happens.
