Description

Welcome to Hellish, the only podcast that comes to you from Hell's waiting room.

In each episode, Hell's receptionist Daniel Whelan and Satan's tea boy Alex Gale interrogate a newly damned soul, asking them for the five songs they will meet in Hell: the music that we will use to torment them for all eternity. The condemned take us through songs they are embarrassed to have once liked; songs they can't stand that are otherwise universally adored; songs that remind them of bad times; songs they hate by artists they love; and songs that once stuck in their heads, they can never get out.

This time performer, writer, director and podcaster MOLLY NAYLOR gives us the five tracks she will meet in Hell!We talked about Molly's excellent podcast, Making Trouble, in which she interviews artists about the trouble they're having with the things they're making. (It's excellent, and can be heard here, or where you get your podcasts). We also found time to discuss wedding cringe, what directing comedy is like, flutes in popular music, and Molly told us what the worst job she's ever done is.Find out more about Molly at https://www.mollynaylor.com/BUY US A COFFEE! Adult film-maker ED ALDRIDGE of AltSHIFT blows through the five tracks he will meet in Hell!We talk to Ed about how he became involved in making adult films*, the difficulties in making it pay, the teacher who tried to shame his tastes when he started school, and, most of all, we talk about Blowie, Ed's new 'sexy horror' feature film, which is set in the world of adult films without being an adult film.(*Yes, we know 'adult films' is a bit coy, and yes, we know there is a much better word we could use. But if we use that word here, the Algorithm That Infantilises Us All won't like it and it will make this episode harder to find.)You can check out AltSHIFT's films here, and the website for Blowie is here.BUY US A COFFEE! Musician ALEXANDER WOLFE talks us through the five tracks he will meet in Hell!As well as assembling an excellent Infernal Playlist, Alexander tells us about his forthcoming album, Everythinglessness, which is a narrative about mental health. We learn about how to make a concept album, writing for TV, smelly shoes, depression, AND Alex Gale delivers the most controversial statement of the show so far, concerning one of Hellish's regulars. We've given the Hellish colours a rest this week so we can match the Everythinglessness campaign. The first single from the album, "Talk", can be heard here.Special thanks to JAMES FINNEGAN for his help making this episode.BUY US A COFFEE! Journalist and novelist JULIA RAESIDE gives us the five tracks she will meet in Hell! We're back! We're thrilled to be kicking off season three with Julia, whose excellent debut novel Don't Make Me Laugh has just come out in paperback. It's a hilarious post-#MeToo revenge thriller, set in the world of stand-up comedy. We talked about the culture of silence around the bad behaviour of successful men, and gossip can be a force for good. But we also found time to coin a new euphemism, discover the surprise answer to "who has the best selling Christmas album of all time?", and right at the end, Alex calls Julia 'Jessica', so that was a particular highlight. You should go and buy Don't Make Me Laugh IMMEDIATELY. It's fun, and funny, and has something to say. And if you order it here, you'll be helping Hellish out.BUY US A COFFEE! Irish-Welsh indie rock band MANILLA TIMES give us the five tracks they will meet in Hell!We welcomed singer Jack, bassist Ollie, and guitarist Jase to hell for our first ever triple soul reaping. They told us about playing Glastonbury; what would need to be played for a satisfying Busted gig; why their drummer did not arrive in Hell with the rest of them, AND Alex asks the question we've all been wanting an answer to: "does Nannerch have a shop?"Here would be a good place to go to hear the band in action. Author and academic ADAM KOTSKO gives us the five tracks he will meet in Hell!Adam is a scholar of theology, and has written extensively about the devil and demons, so it was a real pleasure to get someone down here who didn't have to go through orientation. That's not all Adam does, however. As well as being a prolific academic with a string of books about politics and Christianity to his name, he also writes about American pop culture, which is where we put most of the chat. His latest Late Star Trek: The Final Frontier in the Franchise Era examines the beloved sci-fi show from the Scott Bakula starring Enterprise to the present day: it's a fascinating book about prequels, and franchise storytelling, that doesn't just appeal to Star Trek fans. He's responsible for a number of hit tv shows, including Flack with Anna Paquin and Where's Wanda? on Apple TV+.As well as getting his Infernal playlist, we asked Oli about how he gets things made, the rules that streamers have for the TV shows they make, what happens to the characters when the show they are in does not get recommissioned, and whether or not he had 'moist' written on his schoolbag. (That last one will make more sense when you listen to the episode.)We also talk about Oli's sitcom, Whites, which is currently available to buy from Apple's TV store in the UK. You can go here to check it out. (That's the only place we could find it in the UK. You don't need an Apple device to buy it.) In the USA and Canada, it's on Prime and Britbox. Songwriter RAY HEFFERNAN gives us the five tracks he will meet in Hell! (PART TWO OF TWO)Things are a bit different on Hellish this week. It's our first two-parter and our first sequel (of sorts). After we discussed the authorship of Robbie Williams's hit song 'Angels' with Emma Newman last week, we thought we'd get in touch with the man who co-wrote it but gets none of the credit, and ask him to tell us the story. We also got to hear about the life of a songwriter and how Ray uses songwriting to teach languages, we got a great break-up story, and generally had a right laugh.Ray got on to the subject of Robbie Williams and the writing of 'Angels' during our usually Patreon-only 'Artist You Will Meet in Hell' section, and so we've decided to put that out on the main feed this week, for everyone to hear, for free. (Patreons got the full, unsplit version last week - one of the perks of going to patreon.com/hellishpod and signing up.) This made the episode a bit long for the main feed, so we're putting it out in two parts simultaneously. To hear Ray performing the original version of 'Angels' - as written by Ray and Robbie Williams in December 1996 - head to https://tinyurl.com/rayangelsFind us on Spotify to hear the songs on Ray's Infernal Playlist in full, as well as the Ultimate Infernal Playlist which combines the choices of every damned soul we've met so far. https://tinyurl.com/hellishpodHead to https://www.patreon.com/hellishpod to access episodes early and ad free, where you will find out which artists our guests will meet in Hell. He also tells us about the words he hates hearing used to describe his music, what he'd do to the Beatles if really really had to, and a previous "worst job you've ever done" makes a surprising - and revealing - comeback.Dan Jones's audio track was recorded at New River StudiosUKAEA on BandcampUKAEA on SpotifyFind us on Spotify to hear the songs on UKAEA's Infernal Playlist in full, as well as the Ultimate Infernal Playlist which combines the choices of every damned soul we've met so far. https://tinyurl.com/hellishpodHead to https://www.patreon.com/hellishpod to access episodes early and ad free, where you will find out which artists our guests will meet in Hell. Best-selling novelist JENNY COLGAN gives us the five tracks she will meet in Hell!Jenny is responsible for producing some of the greatest romantic comedies in all of fiction, as well as some of the greatest Doctor Who stories yet to be seen on TV. We talked to her about both of these things, as well as how she is able to produce a new book every year, how she got into writing novels, her early days in comedy and what it feels like to watch all your friends go off to be hugely successful, the Doctor Who episode she will meet in Hell, and she gave us her Infernal Playlist which, yes, is the point of the show and everything but at least two of the people in the conversation would have been just as happy talking exclusively about Doctor Who for the whole thing.Pre-order the paperback edition of Close Knit herePre-order Meet Me at the Seaside Cottages hereFind us on Spotify to hear the songs on Jenny's Infernal Playlist in full, as well as the Ultimate Infernal Playlist which combines the choices of every damned soul we've met so far. https://tinyurl.com/hellishpodHead to https://www.patreon.com/hellishpod to access episodes early and ad free, where you will find out which artists our guests will meet in Hell.
