The #23 BYU Cougars defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers, 38-24, on Friday night, October 3, 2025, at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah. The victory kept BYU undefeated at 5-0 (2-0 Big 12), while West Virginia dropped to 2-4 (0-3 Big 12).  The story of the game was the aerial assault led by BYU's freshman quarterback, Bear Bachmeier, who threw for a career-high 351 yards and a touchdown, adding another score on the ground. Bachmeier connected on several big plays, including a 47-yard pass to Chase Roberts on the first play and a 54-yard touchdown pass to Parker Kingston. Roberts finished with 161 receiving yards, and Kingston had 111, as the Cougars totaled 517 yards of offense.   West Virginia, starting freshman quarterback Khalil Wilkins in his first career start, struggled to keep pace. Wilkins was a threat running the ball, totaling 89 rushing yards, but completed only 7-of-15 passes for 81 yards and two interceptions. One interception was returned 49 yards by BYU's Therrian Alexander III, setting up an early touchdown.  The Cougars established a commanding 28-10 halftime lead. West Virginia attempted to rally, forcing three turnovers in the game, including a fumble recovery by Fred Perry that led to a Mountaineer touchdown in the third quarter. However, the BYU offense consistently answered, with a long third-quarter drive ending in a field goal and an early fourth-quarter rushing touchdown by LJ Martin.  Despite a late 29-yard touchdown pass from West Virginia's backup quarterback Scotty Fox Jr. to Cam Vaughn, the Mountaineers' inability to stop BYU's big passing plays or consistently run the ball proved to be the difference in the Big 12 contest.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!5-Hour ENERGYEnough with boring, flavorless caffeine, it’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with 5-hour ENERGY®️ shots. Based on the current date of October 2nd, the college basketball season has not yet begun, and conference play in the Big 12 generally doesn't start until January. Therefore, there are no Big 12 basketball conference games scheduled for this immediate weekend. However, if we look ahead to the start of the conference schedule, which typically begins in the first week of January (around January 3rd, according to the schedule matrix), the importance of those initial weekends is immense, setting the tone for the entire season. The Big 12 tournament is a complete meat grinder, making every weekend in conference play feel like an elimination round. When the schedule begins, the first full weekend will immediately test the mettle of the league's top-tier teams, who will face off in brutal, highly-ranked matchups. With preseason favorites like Houston, Texas Tech, and BYU, and traditional powers like Kansas and Arizona all positioned near the top, almost any head-to-head game between them on a Saturday will carry enormous weight. In a conference where a 10-8 or 9-9 record might be enough for a bid, every single weekend is massive. When the games truly start in January, expect every Saturday and Monday slate to feature Top 25 implications, where a single road win or home loss can be the difference between a high NCAA Tournament seed and falling onto the bubble. The very first week of January, therefore, will be the true "big weekend" that kicks off the most competitive conference race in the nation. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!5-Hour ENERGYEnough with boring, flavorless caffeine, it’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with 5-hour ENERGY®️ shots. The Big 12 race heats up this weekend with several pivotal matchups as the conference remains loaded with undefeated and strong teams heading into October. The premier game features a battle of unbeatens as No. 11 Texas Tech (4-0, 1-0 Big 12) travels to face Houston (4-0, 1-0). Texas Tech has been dominant, leading the nation in average winning margin, but Houston is riding high with its own four-game winning streak. This clash pits the Red Raiders' high-powered offense against a Cougars squad looking to prove their early success is sustainable in their new conference landscape.Elsewhere, No. 14 Iowa State (5-0, 2-0), the first Big 12 team to five wins, hits the road to take on Cincinnati (3-1, 1-0). The Cyclones have been extremely stingy defensively, but Cincinnati enters with momentum after a thrilling victory over Kansas last week, showcasing a potent offense capable of scoring quickly.Other key conference contests include Kansas State (2-3, 1-1) visiting Baylor (3-2, 1-1) in a battle for bowl eligibility positioning, and Kansas (3-2, 1-1) traveling to UCF (3-1, 0-1) as the Jayhawks try to bounce back from a tough loss and the Knights seek their first Big 12 win. Finally, Colorado (2-3, 0-2) and coach Deion Sanders return to Fort Worth to face TCU (3-1, 0-1) in a game with redemption on both teams' minds. With four undefeated teams still in the mix, this weekend is set to provide clarity in a highly competitive Big 12 title race.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!5-Hour ENERGYEnough with boring, flavorless caffeine, it’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with 5-hour ENERGY®️ shots. The Utah Utes football program is showing significant improvement in the 2025 season, particularly on the offensive side of the ball, which was a point of weakness in their previous campaign. As of early October 2025, Utah boasts a strong 4-1 overall record (1-1 in the Big 12 Conference) and is ranked in the AP Top 25 poll (No. 25). Here are the key factors contributing to Utah's improved performance: Revamped Offense and New Quarterback: The biggest change is the arrival of new offensive coordinator Jason Beck and transfer quarterback Devon Dampier (both from New Mexico). Dampier, who followed Beck to Salt Lake City, has provided a major spark to the offense, which struggled last year due to injuries and inconsistency.  Through five games, Dampier has been highly efficient, completing 72.5% of his passes for over 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns. The offense has improved dramatically, ranking 21st nationally in scoring (39.0 points per game) compared to being outside the top 100 last year. They are also ranked 13th nationally in rushing yards per game (242.6).  Continued Defensive Excellence: Head Coach Kyle Whittingham's teams are consistently known for their elite defense, and 2025 is no exception. The Utes' defense is among the best in the nation, ranking 20th in points allowed (14.6 points per game) and consistently stifling opposing offenses. This reliable defense provides a strong foundation for the team's success. Veteran Offensive Line: The team returned all five starters on the offensive line, a rarity in college football. This experienced group, led by standout tackles like Spencer Fano, provides excellent pass protection for Dampier and creates running lanes for the running backs. Strong Start: Utah has notched impressive wins, including dominant road victories against UCLA and West Virginia. Their sole loss was a home defeat to a ranked Texas Tech team, but they rebounded with a decisive victory in their next game. In summary, the combination of a high-powered, balanced offense led by a dynamic transfer quarterback/coordinator duo, coupled with the program's customary stout defense, has positioned Utah for a major "bounce-back" season and a potential run for the Big 12 Championship.  Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!5-Hour ENERGYEnough with boring, flavorless caffeine, it’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with 5-hour ENERGY®️ shots. The Big 12 is once again poised to be one of the deepest and most challenging conferences in college basketball for the 2025-2026 season. The conference's reputation for rugged competition remains intact, with multiple teams expected to be national contenders and safely projected in the preseason Top 25 rankings.Leading the charge is Houston, fresh off a National Finalist run and consistently ranked near the top of preseason polls, showcasing their ability to reload talent despite key departures. They are joined by reloaded powerhouses like Texas Tech, which returns a star in the frontcourt and added strong transfers, and BYU, which boasts an elite freshman class headlined by a potential lottery pick in AJ Dybantsa. The Cougars' roster depth has them positioned for their most anticipated season in program history.Even traditional bluebloods like Kansas and Arizona—despite roster turnover—remain firmly in the national conversation thanks to strong recruiting classes and elite coaching. The conference's overall strength is amplified by a high volume of key returning players at Iowa State and an influx of top transfer portal talent across the league, seen in programs like Baylor and West Virginia. With so many programs vying for a league title—and an 18-game conference schedule of non-stop battles—the Big 12 will be a grueling test of endurance. Its proven track record of advancing teams deep into the NCAA Tournament suggests the conference will once again be an absolute gauntlet from top to bottom, preparing its contenders perfectly for March Madness.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!5-Hour ENERGYEnough with boring, flavorless caffeine, it’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with 5-hour ENERGY®️ shots. You're right! The Big 12 slate this weekend (October 4-5, 2025) is absolutely loaded with crucial conference matchups, featuring undefeated teams, high-stakes contests for standings, and the drama that comes with a massive 16-team league. Here are the games that make this weekend so much fun: Top-Tier Showdowns & Conference Race Defining Games This week features multiple games where a win vaults a team into the top echelon of the Big 12 standings, and a loss creates an early hole.No. 14 Iowa State at Cincinnati (Sat., 12:00 p.m. ET, ESPN2): This is arguably the biggest game of the early slate. The No. 14 Cyclones are 5-0 (2-0 in Big 12) and looking to continue their run as a conference title favorite. They face the Cincinnati Bearcats (3-1, 1-0), who are proving to be a tough out in their new conference and have an explosive offense. An Iowa State win cements their status; a Cincinnati win puts the Bearcats on the map immediately.No. 11 Texas Tech at Houston (Sat., 7:00 p.m. ET, ESPN): The No. 11 Red Raiders (4-0, 1-0) are the highest-ranked team playing this week and are traveling to face an undefeated Houston Cougars squad (4-0, 1-0). Both teams are 1-0 in conference play, making this a pivotal early battle for control of the standings. Expect a high-scoring Texas-sized shootout.West Virginia at No. 23 BYU (Fri., 10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN): The weekend kicks off with a Friday night thriller in Provo. The No. 23 Cougars (4-0, 1-0) are hoping to keep their perfect season going, but the Mountaineers (2-3, 0-2) are desperate for their first conference win to keep their bowl hopes alive. The atmosphere under the lights should be incredible. Intriguing Mid-Tier Battles These matchups will start to separate the contenders from the rest of the pack in the crowded middle of the league.Colorado at TCU (Sat., 7:30 p.m. ET, FOX): The rematch of the highly publicized 2024 season opener sees Coach Prime's Buffaloes (2-3, 0-2) heading to Fort Worth to take on the Horned Frogs (3-1, 0-1). Both teams are looking for a key conference victory after tough losses last week, making this a high-stakes game for momentum and national attention.Kansas at UCF (Sat., 7:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2): Two teams that have shown flashes of brilliance clash in Orlando. The Jayhawks (3-2, 1-1) need a road win to stay above .500 in league play, while the Knights (3-1, 0-1) are defending their home turf against a team with an explosive offense. Expect a late-night battle with plenty of scoring.Kansas State at Baylor (Sat., 12:00 p.m. ET, ESPN+): Both the Wildcats (2-3, 1-1) and the Bears (3-2, 1-1) are coming off a mix of wins and losses and are looking for consistency. The winner of this matchup gains a crucial advantage in the race for a good bowl position and establishes their identity in the Big 12.The sheer volume of meaningful games, including several where both teams have winning records, underscores the exciting depth of the expanded Big 12 this weekend! Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!5-Hour ENERGYEnough with boring, flavorless caffeine, it’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with 5-hour ENERGY®️ shots. The Big 12 Conference has issued a $50,000 fine and a public reprimand to the University of Colorado for inappropriate and derogatory fan chants that occurred during the football game against Brigham Young University (BYU).   Key Details of the Incident: The Game: The incident took place at Folsom Field in Boulder during the Colorado vs. BYU football game on Saturday, September 27, 2025.  The Violation: The fine was levied due to hateful and discriminatory language, specifically religious slurs directed at BYU and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), the church that sponsors BYU. The chants were audible during the game.  The Penalty: Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark issued the fine, stating that "Hateful and discriminatory language has no home in the Big 12 Conference," and that the league maintains "zero tolerance for such behavior."  The Response: The University of Colorado, including Chancellor Justin Schwartz and Athletic Director Rick George, issued a statement condemning the behavior, calling it "deeply disappointing" and not reflective of the university's values of respect and inclusion. Coach Deion Sanders also publicly apologized to BYU during his weekly news conference.  This move reinforces the Big 12's policy of penalizing member institutions for fan behavior that violates the conference's Principles and Standards of Sportsmanship.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!5-Hour ENERGYEnough with boring, flavorless caffeine, it’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with 5-hour ENERGY®️ shots. The complaint that the Associated Press (AP) Poll "neglects" the Big 12 Conference is a recurring and widely discussed topic among college football fans and analysts. This perception stems from several systemic issues within the poll's dynamics, which often seem to favor the "blue blood" programs of the SEC and Big Ten.Here is an analysis of how the AP Poll is perceived to neglect or undervalue the Big 12:1. The Brand Name and Preseason Anchoring EffectReliance on Reputation: The preseason AP Poll is heavily based on brand recognition and historical success. Conferences like the SEC and Big Ten have traditional powers (Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State) that consistently start in the top 10, regardless of heavy roster turnover. The New Big 12's Challenge: With the departures of traditional powerhouses like Texas and Oklahoma, the new Big 12 is fighting an uphill battle for national respect. The new members are strong programs (like BYU, Utah, Arizona State), but they often lack the same national "brand" pull with voters to crack the top-10 initially. This "anchoring" effect means Big 12 teams must work harder to climb. 2. The "Quality Loss" vs. "Cannibalization" Dynamic SEC/Big Ten Benefit: When a highly-ranked SEC or Big Ten team loses to another highly-ranked conference foe, the loss is often framed as a "quality loss." The losing team might drop a few spots, but their overall ranking remains relatively high because they lost to a "good team" in a "tough conference."Big 12 Penalty: The Big 12 is often characterized by extreme parity and "cannibalization," where nearly any team can beat another on a given Saturday. While this makes for great football, AP voters often punish Big 12 teams more severely for losses, causing them to drop out of the poll entirely, or severely reduce the ranking of the team that beat them. This cycle devalues the conference's wins and perceived overall strength.   3. Lower Ceiling in the Polls Depth vs. Top-Heavy: In recent polls, the Big 12 often has a good number of teams ranked (or just outside the Top 25), showing its deep competition. However, they frequently lack representation in the elite top-5 or top-10 tier compared to the SEC and Big Ten.  Narrative of the "Fourth Best Conference": The AP poll's initial rankings and subsequent movements often reflect a national media narrative that places the Big 12 as the third or fourth-best conference. This lower initial ranking means Big 12 teams have less margin for error; one loss can knock them out of the poll entirely, whereas an SEC team can sustain a loss and still be ranked due to their starting position. In summary, the perception of Big 12 neglect is less about a lack of competitive teams and more about how the AP Poll's traditional voting habits—driven by brand, history, and the valuation of "quality losses"—disadvantage a conference built on competitive balance and new memberships. For the Big 12, an undefeated season often yields a lower ranking than a comparable record in the SEC or Big Ten.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!5-Hour ENERGYEnough with boring, flavorless caffeine, it’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with 5-hour ENERGY®️ shots. The Big 12 proved its status as one of college football's most competitive and volatile leagues this weekend, featuring a slate packed with razor-thin margins, major comebacks, and immediate shake-ups to the conference hierarchy. The most intense competition came in the two one-score thrillers that defined the Saturday atmosphere. The rivalry game between No. 25 BYU and Colorado went down to the wire, with the Cougars just holding on for a 24-21 victory in a game that was close throughout, highlighting the difficulty of securing a win in the Big 12's new landscape. Even more dramatic was the finish in Lawrence, where newcomer Cincinnati secured a stunning road win against Kansas with a late touchdown drive, topping the Jayhawks 37-34.Friday night set the tone, with Arizona State mounting a massive comeback from a 17-0 deficit to edge out TCU 27-24, proving that no lead is safe in the conference. Another major test of competitiveness came from the Kansas State Wildcats, who defeated previously undefeated UCF 34-20 in a game that saw K-State pull away late, but only after a tense battle for control in the third quarter. While some games resulted in larger margins, such as No. 14 Iowa State's impressive 39-14 win over Arizona and Utah's 48-14 bounce-back against West Virginia, the overall narrative was one of parity. The close finishes and significant comebacks underscored the league's competitive balance, where every week presents a legitimate challenge, and the race for the Big 12 Championship is truly wide open. This weekend emphatically showed that in the new Big 12, every victory must be earned.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!5-Hour ENERGYEnough with boring, flavorless caffeine, it’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with 5-hour ENERGY®️ shots. Chaos Reigns: BYU Thriller Highlights Wild Big 12 Weekend The Big 12 delivered a thrilling and unpredictable slate of games this Saturday, headlined by upsets, nail-biting finishes, and commanding performances that have dramatically reshaped the early conference standings. The weekend's drama peaked in Boulder, where the No. 25 BYU Cougars held off a late surge from Colorado to win a heart-stopping 24-21 contest. Freshman QB Bear Bachmeier and the BYU defense secured the victory, surviving a fierce effort from the Buffaloes in the rivalry rematch.Meanwhile, the newcomers to the league continued to make noise. Cincinnati stunned Kansas in a high-scoring affair in Lawrence, winning 37-34 after a late go-ahead touchdown drive with just 29 seconds on the clock, dropping the Jayhawks to 1-1 in Big 12 play. The biggest statement of the day came from No. 14 Iowa State, which thoroughly dismantled an undefeated Arizona team with a dominant 39-14 victory. QB Rocco Becht accounted for three rushing touchdowns as the Cyclones look like a legitimate conference contender. On the flip side, the preseason favorite Utah Utes bounced back from last week's loss by rolling over an injury-plagued West Virginia team in a 48-14 rout. Other key results saw Baylor pull off a decisive 45-27 road win over Oklahoma State, and Kansas State get their first conference victory, defeating previously undefeated UCF 34-20.With the dust settled, the Big 12 race is wide open, confirming its status as one of college football's most compelling and chaotic conferences.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!5-Hour ENERGYEnough with boring, flavorless caffeine, it’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with 5-hour ENERGY®️ shots. No. 25 BYU Edges Colorado 24-21 in Nail-Biting Big 12 Battle The No. 25 BYU Cougars escaped Boulder with a thrilling and hard-fought 24-21 victory over the Colorado Buffaloes in a dramatic Saturday night Big 12 contest at Folsom Field. In a game that served as a heated rematch of the previous season's Alamo Bowl, the Cougars demonstrated their resilience, overcoming an early deficit and fighting off a late Colorado surge to remain undefeated. Game Summary Colorado came out firing, leaning heavily on the explosiveness of quarterback Kaidon Salter and wide receiver Dre'lon Miller to take an early lead. Miller, lining up at the wildcat, scored one of the Buffs' initial touchdowns, helping Colorado jump out to a 14-3 lead in the first quarter. However, the BYU offense, led by true freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier, found its rhythm late in the first half. Bachmeier orchestrated a crucial touchdown drive, capped by a 5-yard scoring pass to Chase Roberts just before the break, narrowing the deficit to 14-10.The second half was a back-and-forth defensive struggle that saw the lead change hands multiple times:BYU Takes the Lead: The Cougars struck first in the third quarter. Facing a 4th-and-2, Bachmeier hit Roberts again for a 4-yard touchdown pass, giving BYU its first lead of the night at 17-14.Colorado Responds: The Buffaloes quickly answered, with Salter connecting with Miller for a 19-yard touchdown pass to retake the lead, 21-17, heading into the final quarter. The Go-Ahead Score: BYU delivered the decisive blow early in the fourth quarter. Wide receiver Cody Hagen took a rushing attempt 32 yards for a touchdown, putting the Cougars back on top, 24-21. Defensive Climax In the game's final minutes, the BYU defense proved to be the difference-maker. As Colorado attempted a potential game-winning or game-tying drive, linebacker Isaiah Glasker sealed the victory with a late interception of Kaidon Salter. Glasker, who was the Defensive MVP of the teams' previous bowl matchup, cemented the win by ensuring the Buffaloes never got a final shot at a field goal. The hard-earned victory improves No. 25 BYU's record and provides a crucial road win as they navigate the tough waters of the Big 12 Conference. For Colorado, it was a bitter loss, highlighting their continued fight under Coach Prime but leaving them just short of a major upset.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!5-Hour ENERGYEnough with boring, flavorless caffeine, it’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with 5-hour ENERGY®️ shots. The firing of Mike Gundy from Oklahoma State marks the end of a remarkable, yet recently tumultuous, era. As the winningest coach in program history, his dismissal only three games into the 2025 season sent shockwaves through the college football world. The Breakdown of the Firing Timing and Immediate Cause:Gundy was officially fired on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, after a disappointing 1-2 start to the 2025 season. The final straw appeared to be a stunning home loss to in-state rival Tulsa, a program Gundy had never lost to during his tenure. The loss to Tulsa immediately followed an embarrassing 69-3 blowout defeat at the hands of the Oregon Ducks. The Bigger Picture: Two Seasons of Decline: The decision was ultimately based on a downward trend that began well before the 2025 season:The 2024 Collapse: The team finished the 2024 season with a terrible 3-9 overall record, including their first winless conference record in 30 years and a season-ending 52-0 blowout loss to Colorado. The Losing Streak: When he was fired, Oklahoma State was on an 11-game losing streak against FBS opponents, which was unacceptable for a program Gundy had elevated to a national contender.Failure to Adapt to Modern CFB: Gundy had publicly struggled to fully embrace the new era of college football, especially the Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) landscape and the Transfer Portal. He had made comments indicating reluctance toward aggressive NIL strategies, leading to concerns from the administration and donors about the program's competitiveness. The Legacy and The Cost:The Winningest Coach: Gundy was the quintessential Cowboy, a former OSU quarterback who led the program for over 20 seasons, accumulating 170 career wins and multiple 10-win seasons. He took the program to heights previously unseen, including a Big 12 Championship in 2011.The Buyout: Oklahoma State will pay Gundy a $15 million buyout, an amount that was reportedly restructured last offseason (it was originally much higher) in what may have been an attempt to create an "off-ramp" for his departure.Interim Coach: Offensive coordinator Doug Meacham was named the interim head coach for the remainder of the 2025 season. The dismissal signals that the administration and key financial supporters prioritized a change in direction and a renewed commitment to competing at the highest level, even if it meant moving on from the most successful coach in school history.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!5-Hour ENERGYEnough with boring, flavorless caffeine, it’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with 5-hour ENERGY®️ shots. Week 5 is a colossal proving ground for the Big 12, with a stacked slate of conference games ready to redefine the league's championship picture. The biggest game on the docket is the Friday night showcase: No. 24 TCU at Arizona State. This clash of undefeated TCU (3-0) and reigning conference champion Arizona State (3-1) is critical. TCU's high-octane offense, led by QB Josh Hoover, faces an aggressive Sun Devils defense hoping to protect their seven-game home win streak. The winner gains a major early advantage in the race for the Big 12 Championship Game. Another pivotal matchup is the battle of undefeated newcomers and veterans: Arizona at No. 14 Iowa State. Arizona (3-0) boasts a top-10 scoring defense, providing a stark challenge for the Cyclones (4-0) and veteran QB Rocco Becht. A Wildcats road upset would validate their early success, while an Iowa State victory solidifies their status as a conference frontrunner. The league will also be watching two major storylines: The Utes' Desperation: Preseason favorite Utah, reeling from a brutal loss to Texas Tech, must travel to West Virginia for a crucial contest to avoid an 0-2 start. The New Era: Baylor visits Oklahoma State for the Cowboys' first game without Mike Gundy patrolling the sidelines, following the head coach's recent departure. Finally, the late-night game No. 25 BYU at Colorado offers a thrilling rivalry with CFP implications for the undefeated Cougars. With multiple undefeated teams still standing, Week 5 is set to separate the contenders from the pretenders in the new Big 12. Utah was widely considered a strong favorite and a potential Big 12 title contender entering their first season in the conference, but their play—especially in conference games—has been profoundly disappointing. The core of the disappointment stems from the 2024 season's final record and poor conference standing.Losing Record and Conference Woes: Utah finished the 2024 season with a losing record of 5–7 overall and a highly disappointing 2–7 in Big 12 play. They failed to become bowl-eligible, a shocking outcome for a program that had established itself as a perennial 9+ win team and two-time Pac-12 champion.  Offensive Struggles: The team's biggest issue was the offense, which was historically ineffective. Their scoring offense ranked 14th out of 16 teams in the Big 12 conference statistics. This was primarily attributed to a crippling wave of quarterback injuries throughout the season, which derailed any chance of offensive rhythm and forced them to use four different quarterbacks.  Inability to Close Games: They suffered several close, winnable losses in conference play to teams like TCU, Houston, and a heartbreaking defeat to rival BYU.The Irony of the Defense: The disappointment is magnified by the fact that their defense remained elite, finishing 5th in the Big 12 in scoring defense (and 2nd overall for the entire season in the conference). The defense performed at a championship level, but the offense could not consistently hold up its end.Heading into the 2025 season, the narrative of disappointment has recently been highlighted by a stunning home loss to Texas Tech. After a strong 3-0 start, the Utes were blown out 34-10 in their first ranked conference matchup of the year, with the offense again sputtering and committing four turnovers. This performance has dropped Utah out of the AP Top 25 and reignited concerns about the program's offensive identity and ability to compete against the new Big 12's best teams.
While BYU enters this weekend's game in Boulder as a top-25 team and a 6.5-point favorite, there are a number of factors that could lead to a Colorado upset. For the Buffaloes to pull it off, they will need to execute on a few key fronts. 1. Kaidon Salter's Continued Improvement Colorado's hopes for an upset start with quarterback Kaidon Salter. After a shaky start to the season, he was benched in Week 3, but he rebounded with his best performance of the year in a win over Wyoming. His ability to use both his arm and his legs was on full display. For Colorado to upset BYU, Salter will need to be at his best, protecting the ball and being a threat in the running game to open up the offense. 2. Take Advantage of BYU's Inexperience BYU is led by true freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier, who, while impressive in his first three starts, has yet to face a truly disruptive, blitz-heavy defense on the road in a hostile environment. Colorado's defense, led by its talented linebackers and safety Tawfiq Byard, will need to create pressure and force Bachmeier into making mistakes. If they can force turnovers and short-circuit BYU's offense, they can control the tempo of the game. 3. Establish the Run Game To control the clock and keep BYU's explosive offense off the field, Colorado will need to establish the run game. Running backs Micah Welch and Simeon Price, both with over 140 rushing yards on the season, will be crucial. BYU's defense has been stellar, but if Colorado can wear them down in the trenches, it could open up play-action passing and tire out the Cougars' defensive front in the high altitude of Boulder. 4. Special Teams and Turnovers Upset victories often hinge on the little things, and for Colorado, that means winning the turnover and special teams battle. BYU's defense has been opportunistic, forcing multiple turnovers in its last win, including a pick-six. Colorado cannot afford to give away free points or give BYU's offense a short field. If the Buffaloes can force a turnover or two and win the field position battle, they can put themselves in a position to win a low-scoring game.
Last week was an absolute chaotic carnival in Big 12 football, delivering a series of shocking results, major upsets, and significant shifts in the conference hierarchy. If you thought the league was wide open before, Week 4 blew the doors off the competition. Here is a breakdown of how wild the week was: 1. The Preseason Favorite CrumblesThe biggest story of the weekend was the complete dismantling of the presumed Big 12 favorite. Texas Tech Dominates Utah: The No. 17 Texas Tech Red Raiders flew into Salt Lake City and delivered a jarring 34-10 beatdown of No. 16 Utah. The Red Raiders' defense stifled the Utes' offense all game, holding them to just 10 points. The win not only marked Texas Tech as the new team to beat but also immediately put Utah at a massive disadvantage in the conference race at 0-1.  2. A Coaching Firing After a Rock-Bottom LossThe results of the weekend led to a coaching change that sent shockwaves across the country. Oklahoma State Upset by Tulsa: The Cowboys hit a new low, losing at home to in-state Group of Five rival Tulsa, 19-12. This stunning defeat—a loss to a team they were double-digit favorites against—was the final straw. Mike Gundy was fired just days later, ending the longest coaching tenure in the Big 12 and symbolizing just how quickly the landscape of the conference is changing. 4. Kansas’s Offense Continues to ShineWhile not an upset, one team definitively proved they are a legitimate contender. Kansas Rolls West Virginia: The Kansas Jayhawks dominated West Virginia, 41-10, in their conference opener. Quarterback Jalon Daniels and the Jayhawks' high-powered offense looked virtually unstoppable, signaling that Kansas is a serious threat to compete for a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game. In summary, last week was marked by the biggest early-season upset of the Big 12 favorite, the ensuing firing of a legendary coach, and a dramatic, last-second win by one of the league's newest members. The results have essentially reset the league's power structure, proving that in the new 16-team Big 12, absolutely any team can win on any given Saturday.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!5-Hour ENERGYEnough with boring, flavorless caffeine, it’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with 5-hour ENERGY®️ shots. This weekend's Big 12 football slate is a perfect microcosm of the conference's current identity: deep, unpredictable, and loaded with games that have major implications for the league's championship race. After a wild weekend that saw Texas Tech dismantle Utah and Mike Gundy lose his job, the drama only intensifies in Week 5.Here are the key matchups highlighting how good the slate is:Top 25 Showdown: TCU at Arizona State (Friday)The weekend kicks off with a ranked showdown on Friday night. No. 24 TCU travels to Tempe to take on defending Big 12 champion Arizona State. This game is a pivotal early-season test for both. TCU is looking to prove its undefeated record is legitimate, while Arizona State is trying to hold serve at home and climb the rankings. This is a crucial early marker for the title race.Undefeated Battle: Arizona at No. 14 Iowa StateTwo undefeated teams clash in Ames as Arizona (3-0) visits No. 14 Iowa State (4-0). Iowa State's physical defense against Arizona's high-flying offense, led by quarterback Noah Fifita, makes this a must-watch. The winner moves to the front of the line of Big 12 title contenders and solidifies their spot in the national conversation.Rivalry and Ranking Drama: No. 25 BYU at ColoradoThe rivalry between No. 25 BYU and Colorado has been reignited, and this game in Boulder is going to be electric. BYU, despite its strong start, is on upset alert facing a Colorado team with nothing to lose in a hostile environment. With BYU's stout defense against Colorado's explosive plays, this late-night game on ESPN has all the makings of a classic.High-Stakes Intrigue: Utah at West VirginiaA fascinating bounce-back game for both teams. Utah travels to West Virginia needing a win to avoid an 0-2 start in the Big 12 after its stunning loss to Texas Tech. Meanwhile, West Virginia is looking to reset its own season after a disappointing defeat to Kansas. This game will reveal which program has the mental toughness to correct course early in the season. The slate is defined by high-stakes matchups where nearly every outcome will shake up the conference standings and create significant movement in the AP Poll.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!5-Hour ENERGYEnough with boring, flavorless caffeine, it’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with 5-hour ENERGY®️ shots. Saturday, September 20, was a perfect example of why the Big 12 is arguably the most competitive conference in college football. The day was filled with upsets, thrilling finishes, and major statement victories that reshaped the early-season landscape. The biggest story was Texas Tech's commanding 34-10 road win over Utah. In a matchup between two top-20 teams, the Red Raiders' defense completely shut down the physical Utah offense, validating Texas Tech as a legitimate contender. Meanwhile, the new members of the conference continued to prove their worth. In Waco, Arizona State, the defending Big 12 champion, showcased its grit with a 27-24 victory over Baylor, sealed with a last-second field goal. BYU, despite a close start, went on the road and defeated a tough East Carolina team 34-13, solidifying its strong start to the season. The day also saw surprising blowouts. Kansas dominated West Virginia, winning 41-10 in a game that was uncompetitive from the start. The Jayhawks' offense was explosive, while their defense made key plays and forced turnovers. Similarly, UCF continued its impressive start, soundly defeating North Carolina 34-9, further cementing the Big 12's strong performance against the ACC this season. Saturday's results left no doubt about the depth and parity of the Big 12. There is no clear-cut favorite, and a number of teams have emerged as legitimate threats to win the conference championship. The unpredictability of the league, where any team can win on any given Saturday, makes it one of the most exciting conferences to watch in college football. Multiple reputable sources are reporting that Mike Gundy has been fired as the head football coach at Oklahoma State University. The news comes after the Cowboys' disappointing 1-2 start to the 2025 season, which was capped off by a loss to in-state rival Tulsa. Here is a breakdown of the situation:The Firing: According to reports from multiple outlets including Sports Illustrated and On3, Oklahoma State informed Gundy on Tuesday that he was being relieved of his duties, effective immediately. This ends a 21-season tenure where he became the winningest coach in program history with a record of 170-90.The On-Field Struggles: The decision was largely prompted by the team's poor performance over the past two seasons. The Cowboys finished the 2024 season with a 3-9 record and went winless in the Big 12, the first time that had happened in Gundy's career. The 2025 season started with more disappointment, including a 69-3 blowout loss to Oregon in Week 2 and a home loss to Tulsa this past weekend. The Financials: The firing comes despite Gundy's recently restructured contract, which he agreed to in the offseason to remain at Oklahoma State. The new deal included a buyout of $15 million if he was to be fired in the first three years, a sum the university is reportedly willing to pay to move in a new direction. The Legacy: Gundy leaves behind a complicated but highly successful legacy. He elevated the Oklahoma State program to a consistent contender, leading the Cowboys to a Big 12 title in 2011 and eight seasons with at least 10 wins. He was a transformative figure who made Oklahoma State a perennial presence in the national rankings. The Cowboys will now begin the search for their first new head coach in over two decades.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!5-Hour ENERGYEnough with boring, flavorless caffeine, it’s time to give your caffeine a flavor upgrade with 5-hour ENERGY®️ shots.
